Here is a maths trick so unbelievable that it will stump you. Personally I would like to know who came up with this and why that person is not running the country.

1. Grab a calculator. (You won't be able to do this one in your head)
2. Key in the first three digits of your home phone number (NOT the area code)
3. Multiply by 8
4. Add 1
5. Multiply by 250
6. Add the last 3 digits of your phone number.
7. Add the last 3 digits of your phone number again.
8. Subtract 250.
9. Divide number by 2.


Do you recognize the answer?

Are you sure you've done all the sums correctly? If you follow the steps correctly i would think its impossible to be wrong.

Failing that make sure you have a working phone line:D

Didn't work for me, I got close to my number but there was a digit missing (I have 7, it shows 6).

I would be more impressed if I didn't have to type in any of my phone numbers and came up with the correct answer :D :D

I got it the second time after relising that i had to add a number to the start one fine first :D I live in an area where its 018907 ***** and not 0189 7***** pest :D

Follow the instructions, calling the first part of your number x and the second part y.

First number = x

Times 8:

8x

Add 1

8x + 1

Times that by 250:

250(8x + 1)

Add the second part of your number twice:

250(8x + 1) + y + y

Simplified:

250(8x + 1) + 2y

Take off 250:

250(8x + 1) + 2y - 250

Divide by 2:

( 250( 8x + 1 ) + 2y - 250 ) / 2

Multiply out the brackets on the top of the fraction:

(2000x + 250 + 2y - 250 ) / 2

The 250s cancel each other:

(2000x + 2y) / 2

Then take a factor of two out of the two terms left on the top of the fraction:

1000x + y

So 1000 times the first part of your number, leaves that number with 3 trailing zeros, then adding the second part just changes the zeros for that second part.

So all 6 numbers are you phone number without the area code then yes.......:)

No, I tried it for both the business number & the home one both with & without the 8 (which isn't actually part of the area code, that's 020) with the 8 I have 2 numbers in the middle missing without, only one. It obviously doesn't like London numbers. I'm guessing other "city" numbers will do the same.

(without the 020 I have 8 digits in my numbers)

Try it with 2500 in the place of 250 and it'll work with 7 digit numbers, or 25000 for 8 digit ones.

YOUR AGE BY DINER & RESTAURANT MATHS
Work this out as you read.

Be sure you don't read the bottom until you've worked it out!

1. First of all, pick the number of times a week that you would like to go out to eat. (more than once but less than 10)

2. Multiply this number by 2 (just to be bold)

3. Add 5

4. Multiply it by 50

5. If you have already had your birthday this year add 1758...

If you haven't, add 1757.

6. Now subtract the four digit year that you were born.

You should have a three digit number


The first digit of this was your original number. (I.e., How many times
you want to go out to restaurants in a week.)


The next two numbers are

YOUR AGE ! ------ (Oh YES, it is!) :eek: :eek:

50(2x + 5 ) multiplied out gives you 100x + 250, and adding the 250 to 1757 or 1578 gives you the year of your last birthday, so obviously if you take your year of birth away you're left with your age. The 100x part sticks your original number at the front of the answer....
