What gobo lights?

Hya fellas in the next few weeks am gonna be looking for lighting for my new rig.
I am looking in to gobo type lighting and was asking a mate about the NJD datamoons but was advised against them (poor build quality)?????
With just setting everything up am not looking to spend a fortune but that said I don't want to scrimp that much were the lights are crap, probably for this type of light £200+ for 2 and will also have other effects, maybe a couple of ADJ Revo 3.
Obviously I would like to be able to alternate the lights through the evening so not necessarily on all at once.

Any advice would be much appreciated. :beer1:

Nothing wrong with Datamoons and the build quality is going to be the same as other lights in the same price bracket.

Spend £250+ and then you might get better build quality.

I use 4x Acme Puma's and am very pleased with them. I used to use 2x Datamoons and I think the programs and gobo's in the puma's are a lot better. You should be able to get a pair for a £200

Also worth looking at are the iSolution moonflowers, but they may be mor than you want to pay.

although only 100w ive heard and seen that the martin mania range are very good ........ and they have martin stckers on and everything :D :D

Another NJD fan here... buy the set with the handheld controller and you won't need to alternate the lights at all... just twiddle with the program to suit the music in question.

As for build quality I've heard the odd comment on here and elsewhere from time to time but I've had mine about 18 months, used at virtually every gig, and so far I've had to change one bulb and re-solder the control cable which had a loose wire due mainly to being abused.

If I was setting up a second rig these'd be the first purchase on my list.

The Puma's are virtualy identical to these but are 250W, well worth the extra few quid in my opinion.

Some good ideas to throw around there fellas cheers.
I do like the datamoons and was thinking on the set you can buy with controller and carry case and not a bad price either.
Ill have a nosy at them pumas also they sound good.

On the subject of the Martin Manias, are the gobos interchangeable?
My mate has a couple that I may yet have of him, one is the fire effect and one is like a water effect.
The fire one I would definitely like as I wouldn't mind using to fire backwards as its a cracking effect and just a case of focusing in to whatever wall.

He also has a couple of Acme wild techs and has offered them to me for £250 with the 2 Martins, I think they have been used twice that's all from new so may consider them.
Ideally I would like were I have 3 different light shows that can be used at different events especially if I am doing the same place regular so can rotate the effects so not always the same each time.

I had a pair of those too a few years ago and they are nice little effects, but out of the two, I'd go for the Datamoons.

I was in the same situation about 3 months ago.

It was between the Magic Gobo's and Datamoons.

I was lucky enough to be offered free hire of a pair of datamoon for an evening and took them to one of my functions. I returned them the next day and purchased a pair of Puma's:D .

And I've never looked back.

I found the NJD Datamoons are nice but the design and gobo's are too old. the NJD only has about 7 gobos where the Puma's have like 14 (and are better gobo's and more colours). also the Puma's have strobe, Gobo scroll and Gobo shake features. But the thing that the NJD just couldn't beat it on was the DMX. When you connect 2 or 4 of these unit together they work with each other. you have to see it to understand but looks amazing. For example they take it in turn to strobe, sometimes you get one spinning clockwise and the other anti-clock wise. Seriously these lights are amazing. I may be looking into getting another 2 in the future.

The one thing i don't like bout this unit is the controller. it comes with the standard CA-8 controller which allows you to select gobo, strobe, put them into "slow mode" for first dances ect which i think is slightly lacking control but with a proper controller these lights will beat anything in my opinion.

its worth spending that little bit more £££ to upgrade from the magic gobo's to the Puma's. they have the same gobo's but has different shows and are 250w not 100w.

Puma's get my vote hands down and I've used the NJD's before.
