Using 0870 numbers

Just came across this today--I need to speak to an Entertainment Agency who appear to be in the Corporate/ High net worth market as we are supplying a Line Dance Caller to start the evening---followed by one of their no doubt very expensive Bands:D

The client gave me the details and the phone contact was 0870:eek:

I was surprised as I thought this was a bit of a .... take :(

Maybe Corporates and well heeled clients dont care--but I would have thought it was a turn off for a lot of potential clients.

I sent an email--blowed if im paying for the pleasure of talking to them:(

Is it just me????????????

Lots of companies use them if they cover a large geographic area. It seems that many people don't like to call them, presumable as they're expensive and not included in free minutes packages. I've never had a problem with a local one putting off people further afield. I had an enquiry from Newcastle Upon Tyne today, for example.

As far as I know, 0870 numbers are included in my mobile tariff. Freecall and
lo call ones cost me money though! :eek: :confused: :bang:

From February 2008 the cost of calls to 0870 numbers will be the same as calls to national-rate geographic numbers and revenue sharing on 0870 numbers will cease. A free-to-caller pre-announcement informing the caller of the cost of the call will be required for companies intending to charge higher rates.

So they can still charge you premium rates--:eek: :eek: :eek:

Personally I also get calls from all over the Country including Newcastle and I have a standard phone number--so I agree having 0870 is not that necessary -yes its annoying if you cant make a free call when you have paid for the facility.

I give 0870 a miss every time as I dont want to pay--unless its unavoidable.

The same goes for my customers ringing me--they get it free if on a package--which most people are these days.

I was thinking of creating a new number for buisness use only and use my mobile if i'm out of the office or away for a long time.

I use this company - http://www.voiptalk.org/ Costs about £3 a month for a geographic number which you can just set to divert to your mobile (although I used a voipphone connected directly to my router), although it would cost you 14p a minute for the diverted calls at peak times!

My monthly bill rarely exceeds £4 or £5. My worst month ever was about £8.

Customer gets a free call.

Agreed Martin, if its free to customer--- great idea--- it encourages calls--

I'm with you - I'll always avoid 087xx numbers. I'm not happy with 0845's either - I just don't like the thought of paying for phone calls when I've already signed up to a bundle I guess... :rolleyes:

Yes. I have a pocket diary and a printout of quote rules.

The only time I won't is if I'm driving, in which case i'll either pull over or call back. Always have a laptop handy and a 3G modem.

Yes--I do it all day long here at home--and if im out as long as I have my personal gig list dates with me theres no problem.

I can recall taking some quite well paid jobs whilst out shopping or socialising and even on my beloved Boat in the Summer.

Im not saying a lot of people accept the quotes :eek:

Many people want to go away and think about it after getting the quote--
some book on the spot--normally the cheaper quotes.

When im in Thailand or Egypt I do everything by email, we picked up our high profile 4th July booking purely over the Internet last year on holiday in Cairo, not spoken to the Agency at all--

I run a simple style business. Thats why I enjoy it.

BTW the Agency with the 0870 havent acknowledged my email after 24 hours::whistle:
