Well a few weeks ago I decided to hold the "Party of the Year" to promote me as a business. OMG did it go well, over 250 turned up! At £5 a ticket wasn’t bad:D. There was a live band and then I played for around 2 and half hours and they loved it! I reckon i will have a few bookings out of it as well, so all good,

Keep strobes to a minimum at a disco. only put them on about 6fps max. for a short amount of time

And a 14yr old in charge of it:confused: People talk about the nanny state, but back in the late 80's / early 90's we'd have been strung up and flogged to death for using a laser in that manner - and especially at a kids gig:(

Strobe wise, don't forget it is also up to the epileptic to realise a disco could cause a fit.

Strobe & laser regulations are nothing to do with the 'nanny' state, safeworking practices for them have been around longer than several people on this forum, it's all just common flippin sense people!!!!

Maby it would ov been better if you had a poster outside the entrance door saying that you will be using laser, strobe lights and a smoke machine. That way people can read it on the way in.


Also you say that there were 14 adults. Do they know anything about how to use a laser and where it should be pointed for example???

Gotta say, as an observer, I wasn't expecting this post. I thought you were just another egotistical primadonna DJ who was up his own backside.

But, Charlie, you've proved me wrong. It takes a lotta guts to admit when you're wrong and it's very honorable to say sorry. Well done on that and I apologise to you for reading you wrong.

You're still young and you've a long way to go but you've had a taste of success and you want more. It's only natural. Just remember that not all gigs go according to plan but if you work hard at it then you can be the success that you so obviously want to be. But the good folk on here can help you get there. Keep them onside and I guarantee you'll reap the rewards. I know I have.

Missed the boat on this one again - no doubt - but well done lad - I wouldn't know where to start organising a thing like that.

As for the strobe thing - sometimes its better to be told about the problems you could face, rather than to learn the hard way like i did.

If you want guilt you should see someone have a fit at one of your gigs - Bare in mind it was many many years ago and ignorance was bliss back then and the guy insisted it was his fault because he loved strobes and should have either left or told me, but the point is man did i feel bad.

Not sure if things have changed now, but after that episode i enquired as too the "law" and at the time their was no actual law as such just a reccomendation, as far as i know that still stands.

Info i got was to use the device for no longer than 30 seconds at a time and for a max of 5 mins in every hour, longer if you broke up the intensity with other lighting - but to be honest the effect is lost entirely then so i just stick to the 30 seconds.

I do feel for you though at a recent 13th birthday i used a strobe and after that 1st session all i heard all evening was " can you turn on the flashy thing again" if this happened to you then you need to be able to say no without offending them, just my opinion on what may have led you to use it so frequently.

As for lasers they do need to be set so the lowest point is above head height (actual figure is 2.1mtrs), or directly to the floor (ie fixed install pointing straight down) I only ever bring mine down below head height for publicity photos and always when the room is empty.

Apart from that, well done and keep up the good work :)

Its my interpritation of HS(G)95 The Radiation Safety Of Lasers Used for public display, + i am asuming that most of us use class 3b rather than class 4 which is a different kettle of fish,

Although i am aware that crowd scanning is not illegal, it is not generally not worth the risk IMO.

I just re checked and they do rccomend a height of 2.5 mtrs relative rather than 2.1 as previously mentioned (sorry)

The list of variables is a s long as your arm so the above was intended as a rule of thumb measure & was not intended to be taken as law just a quick guide to keep the man out of trouble.

I cant actually link to the document but jpegs will follow shortly of the guide i have here it shows safe distances for crowd hitting effects such as flat beams and tunnels for various MW versions + overhead reccomendations compiled from information from the HSE documents.....

Oooh god - i hope this doesn't turn into an argument, lets be clear its the info I have and for most of us will surfice as a good guide that will keep you within the law.

What types of effect are safe to scan directly at audiences?
Fast moving laser effects with evenly distributed scan patterns, such as circulartunnels are generally safer than effects such as finger beams, or effects with pronounced bright spots in them. The important thing is to be aware of the hazard distance involved.

Hazard Distances
All display lasers have a characteristic known as the hazard distance for directviewing (NOHD). This is distance at which the hazard of viewing the laser directly no longer presents a hazard. i.e. at any point between the laser projector and the calculated hazard distance, it may be hazardous to view the laser directly. But viewing the laser directly from beyond the hazard distance is considered to be safe.

The worst case effect, to look at directly is a static single beam, because all the light energy is concentrated into one point.

The hazard distances for several different powers of Class 3B laser are shown in the table below, to give an idea of the distances involved.

Note - The values have been calculated assuming the characteristics of a typical laser lightshowdevice, which has a beam spread of 2mradians. Details of how to calculate laser hazard distances are detailed in the British Safety Standard, and many laser safety text books. It is also one of the topics usually covered in laser safety courses. It can been seen that static laser beams can remain hazardous for considerable distances, which is why projecting such effects into peoples faces in not recommended.
Remember, projecting these beams overhead is fine, as long as they, or any reflections, are not hitting anybody.
When an effect such as a tunnel is projected, the continual scanning reduces the time the eye is directly exposed to the laser energy. These types of effect are less harmful to aim at the audience directly.

The table below shows the hazard distances of a stationary circular tunnel, with a spread of 50 degrees, and a scan rate of 20Hz, to give an idea of how it is reduced.

Not sure about the laser turning contact lenses green:confused: More likey he could see green specs (pardon the pun) in his eyes. I'm 99.99999% certain a laser such as yours couldn't do that.
I suspect something else caused the problem with his lenses, but then I know nothing about them:D
