There is NO problem uploading your site written with Frontpage:D

I personally launched 3 Frontpage built sites which are using my host Clara net--absolutely no problem--:)

You will need to take your boxing gloves off though when typing the instructions to upload :D :D :D

I simply upload files using the file manager included on my web hosting control panel. I can upload files and also edit them here (although I've very little understanding of HTML so this isn't done very often).

I tried a free trial recently of WS FTP by Ipswitch and this seemed pretty good. I found it cos I was looking for an FTP program to download my site to my laptop for backup. But, like FrontPage, it seems it can be a bit hit-and-miss when it comes to making a connection with my web server. Or maybe it's just my lack of web-publishing knowledge that's at fault. ;)

Just to repeat, I have several sites all written in Front Page and they are hosted by Clara.net.

I regularly upload changes by going to the ftp for the sites--never have a problem.

There has been the odd time when the password hasnt been recognised but I have signed out and gone back again 5 minutes later and its ok.

It was me who told G&J Roadshow that he may encounter problems if uploading via FrontPage

The reason is, some hosts (including myself) give you access above the folder your website uploads to, i.e. the folder your site is to be uploaded to is listed along with other folders. These other folders include system folders, email etc., and if you have your settings wrong in FrontPage and it tries to synchronise to your hosting "root" folder rather then your "web" folder (often "public_html") then FrontPage can delete all the system folders (as they're not part of the website it's uploading) and cause havoc with the hosting account, usually needing it to be restored from a backup or completely recreated from scratch.

Older versions of FrontPage also use FrontPage extensions which reached End of Life in June 2006 (see http://www.rtr.com/fpsupport/), and many hosts do not support these anymore (and those that still do will be forced to upgrade sometime).

Also, I'm not sure if you can change file permissions (also know as CHMOD) through FrontPage (it's been a while since I used it). Some scripts (PHP, CGI etc) for things like contact forms require permissions to be changed on files to work correctly (usually to "755" or "777"), and a standalone FTP client is usually best for this.

I personally prefer to use design software for the design, and a dedicated FTP client for uploading. I use FlashFXP (http://www.flashfxp.com/) but FileZilla (http://filezilla-project.org/) is free and so, I think, is SmartFTP (http://www.smartftp.com/).

Well its your field so ill leave the expert advice to you Marc--I dont understand the technical bits above.

All I CAN tell you is this--I have very simple basic sites.

My sites are written in Front Page and the last one was completed about 18 months ago.

I use Clara.net as host.

I also have hosting for a PHP Responder which is not supported by Front Page or Clara ( not sure which is the problem but somehow works) after Your Internet Store set me up.:D

Everything works perfectly-- -I am continually changing the sites around and apart from the odd blip on the password with Clara its all brilliant.

Thats my 2ps worth. Maybe I have an old fashioned websites--I dont know but it certainly works for me;)

regards

Alan

I use Frontpage 2003 and have no problems with it at all. Just make sure that your hosting provider supports FP extensions.

That's partly where the problem lies, FP extensions are no longer supported by Microsoft. Unix webservers (i.e. most) won't be able to support them when they update to Apache 2.x which is inevitable, or will do so at their own risk (i.e. leaving security holes unpatched).

My advice remains - nomatter who you plan on hosting with, use Frontpage if you like, but don't use FrontPage Extensions and don't use it to upload your site.

Thanks for the advice Marc, what do you suggest is the best software to use to build websites. I built mine using FP 2003 which I found ok as I got used to the software.

To be honest I dont really understand what an FP extension actually does I was just told to make sure you hosting company allow it.

If you're used to (and happy using) FP 2003 then you don't have to stop, only some features use the FrontPage Server Extensions and for a basic site the chances are you don't use any of them. A quick Google search found this page (http://www.webworkshop.org/frontpage/without_extensions.htm) which goes into a little more detail, and also conveniently for this thread explains the FTP alternative a little, too.

Personally I use Dreamweaver, but there are cheap alternatives such as CoffeeCup HTML Editor (http://www.coffeecup.com/html-editor/), and a good free one that keeps cropping up is Nvu (http://nvudev.com/index.php).

I've recently found I can change file permissions (CHMOD) from the File Manager on my Control Panel. I only wish I knew what to change them to to make some of the scripts work properly! I've installed several which do various things (including a useful form-to-email script) but when I try to access them I get file access permission errors. I'm on the verge of giving up!

Most scripts require file permissions of either 755 or 777. Try 755 first, then if that doesn't work try 777. There could be other reasons why things aren't working, though....

Dazzy, if you want these things to work because it will benefit your business do what I did--as an amateur site Builder using Frontpage with a scripting problem.

Hire the services of a Professional--- pay some money for that advice and get a result--I did and its one of the best investments I have made on Websites--not only that--its tax deductable --yee ha!

I cant think of anyone right now that could help you:rolleyes:
