I was doing a spot of shopping yesterday & I kept getting static shocks off the trolley. Now they don't bother me so I thought nothing of it.

Until I was putting something into the trolley & my MP3 player swung forward & made contact with the trolley.

Both hands got a shock & there was a kind of brrrrzzzzzzupt noise in the earphones & I got a shock in both ears. The Player went off & the screen went dead.

I informed the duty manager of this & he was rather bemused. I've been offered gift vouchers to the value of the player & no other form of compensation.

The annoying thing is that if I take the vouchers, It's a straight swap. They take the MP3 player & give me it's retail value in vouchers that I can only spend with them.

Sue them. Don't forget to include the whiplash you suffered as the shock made you jump backwards, emotional distress, sleepless nights, disrupted family life, cost of having the tracks professionally put back on the replacement Ipod plus the cost of the Ipod.

I think their offer of vouchers to the value of the damaged player is very fair.

The only other thing was the static shock, and you've already said these don't bother you, so what other compensation were you expecting?

Maybe you've seen too many of those TV adverts for companies that claim to get you big cash payments after injuries caused by accidents that weren't your fault!

I also suffer from getting lots of static shocks--used to happen all the time when I worked in an office with metal filing cabinets and thick carpets--I used to get a regular flash and a belting shock off the metal drawer handles.

However it seems to be a complex subject and I found this--im sure theres loads more info on the net--

It has been noticed that the following can result in a charge imbalance occuring, and if you have any of the following, it may give a better understanding of why you are being charged up.

Rooms have vinyl or plastic flooring.
Rooms have central heating and a dry atmospheare.
Rooms have air conditioning.
Wheelchair tyres are high pressure slick type with little tread.

Probably you wheeling the trolley wound up the charge and caused the problem--I imagine Morrisons must have a policy on reducing this risk to comply with Hand S.

Presumably you have lost all the MP3s on the machine--you should be able to reclaim those---although legally im not sure on what grounds you can claim----duty of care to customer--Health and safety etc.

They might make an ex gratia payment but deny liability.

If you have any personal injuries or lasting effects than thats a different ball game and you need a lawyer.

The 64,000 dollar question is--will you be match fit for Saturday--and we had better keep well apart in case we blow up the building at the Wedding gig :eek: :eek: :eek:

i just find it sad that everyone seems to want to "claim" or sue for everything.

Was it Morrisons fault? Well it sure as hell wasn't mine or the MP3 player's (which coincidentally had been playing away to me all day with no problems whatsoever)

I disagree. How can they be liable for your Mp3 player? They could quite easily say that you were shopping with due care and attention by using the mp3 player.

Even if I hadn't been listening to it, it would still have been round my neck & probably still been zapped by their trolley. The only difference being, I wouldn't have known about it being (or what caused it to be) broken until later.

Yes, a trolley can charge up. Air is a very good insulator and does not allow charge on the trolley to escape easily unless quite high voltages (thousands of volts) are reached. The main paths that charge can leak away are through the tyres and floor, both of which can often be highly insulating, or through the person touching the trolley, through their shoes and the floor.

There are at least 3 ways in which a person could get a shock when they touch a trolley - either the person is charged, or the trolley is charged, or both are charged.

I have a 3rd generation ipod (one of the first 20gigs with click wheels) and I use the in-ear headphones. The headphones were bought last June, and the ipod almost 2 years ago. I had been getting a light static shock in the right ear for the last month or two... and honestly, the first couple of times I thought I was going crazy. Then, finally... I received a shock yesterday and the iPod suddenly died. This leaves me to believe that the static shock somehow shorted out my iPod.

This sounds like a serious defect to me. If I spend another $300 how do i know the cable running up against my fleece or wool jacket is not going to short it out again?

Steve if I'm not breaking any forum rules here, can I suggest you try getting some answers from this forum www.cosumeractiongroup.co.uk There is a lot of knowledgable people on there. In the past they have helped me reclaim my bank charges and they have given a lot of good advice to thousands of people in all manners of conusmer related issues. After all tere is a bigger issue at stake here. Why should we accept static from shopping trollies as a fact of life?
Either that or carry an anti static strip with you every time you go shopping:p

I will only be using my ipod as a hard drive to store my music though, so the same could be said of any other hard drive which DJs use at discos.

Apart from that, I will have a second identical ipod as back up, a 2GB usb stick with my 300 most played songs, two CD players and a wallet of CDs...so I think I'm covered with back up for music sources!

Tip of the day:

Scratch some paint off a small area of something that is earthed (front panel of something like an amp or lighting controller) and touch it several times at a gig to ensure you don't build up a static charge which could damage your equipment.

it seems a bit odd as my ipod is plastic and as such i wouldnt have thought such a mishap would be possible ??? my friends is metal though i think but again you would have thought that the mp3 player makers would have put a sa***uard in some kind of earth?

why not take the shops offer ... then send the mp3 player back to the manufacturers?? just a thought know its a bit sneaky but seeing as the shop offered nothing to lose i wouldnt have thought?
