Your Backup Equipment

Now before we begin I dont want this to turn out in to a "Iv got better than you" because this means nothing to me at all. :mad:

All I am intrested in is what is your main equipment and what do you have as a backup? This can include anything from speakers, mixers, playout systems, light, leads, ect ect. Anything that can go wrong really.

Once a lot of people have shown some input I will then look in to what I should be getting as backup. :)

well carry back up play out .....

2x compaq presario laptops with pcdj fx and pcdj red

apple 80gb ipod with lots of music and a couple of pre done playlists if im really in the plop.

obviously spare leads power and signal and citronic msx1 as spare mixer

got a back up soundcard on order just a cheap one suggested by someone on here.

spare lamps and fuses with me but have to confess although i have plenty i don't take out back up lighting.

Carry at least 1 spare of every type of cable I use in my setup. Or 2 in the case of iec and phono leads (i use these the most).
I use have a spare amp in the same unit as my main amp so I can fast swap in case of problem. Its not as powerful as my main but in an emergancy should do fine. Have a spare mixer but do not carry it with me. Carry a spare of each of the bulbs I use in my lights and a few spare fuses just incase.
My main decks are my numark d2's but I have a cortex hdc-1000 as my backup. Also its handy so I can cue special songs like happy birthday etc whithout tying up my main decks.
Have a spare hard drive that is indexed to work on my d2 and the cortex.
Spar mics and headphones.
Thats about it for spares I carry with me. Takes up a lot of room but wouldnt be without them for anything.

When covering Disco ( not often) dont take lamps--take spare projector

Speakers--dont bother--take 2 pro 15s for small gigs 1 Peavey Pro 15 is enough if I lose the other

For Disco type gigs take the Subs so even half the speakers could blow peoples heads off at the gigs I cover :D :D :D

Tool kit--but I would never attempt repairs--just get out the spares.

Plenty of long mains leads

Thats it--if you need more space--get a Roof Box:D

Backup wise i generally have near enough a full rig as backup/spares in the van...

Think my best bit of backup has to be the formula sound shadow mixer... Just 1u big but if my main mixer fails i flick one switch and away i go... no unplugging of cables or anything... Then speaker wise as i run a powered system so the likelihood of both subs and both tops stop working is slim (although i carry a couple of smaller tops just incase or to use as backup or for infill/monitors) - Finally i hook up my back up laptop with an external drive as well as the 00DJ so should the 00DJ fail i just hit play..... It should mean that there is never any more than a couple of seconds downtime if the worst should happen....

The back up equipment I take to gigs consists of two single desktop CD players, a spare amp, spare lamps for all my lights & various spare leads.

In terms of redundancy my rig already has spare playout, spare amp, spare mixing capability for 2 channels + mic. I always have several copies of the music on various HDDs but I always keep a big fat drive in the van with pretty much everything I own on it.

Plus, in the van I carry another spare amp, lots of cables & bulbs, fuses etc. and a full toolkit inc. soldering iron and connection diagrams (it's amazing what fits under the seat in a Partner van...). Also in the van are the alternative width bars for my deckstand and a few tripods/t-bars so I can always get the best rig up. Plus a pair of Acme Stormbirds which could come into play if I had a major lighting problem (but I carry too many anyway...)

The only spares I don't carry are speakers and sub; now normally I use one powered sub and a pair of full-range passives so could probably get by if I lost a single cab. However home is a maximum of 18 miles away (more usually 6/7 miles) where there's a duplicate set available.

IMHO you need to get backup in this order: amp, mixer, playout, speakers, lighting. A repair kit and spare bulbs, fuses, leads is an absolute must.

I am still collecting gear so not really got many spares at the moment but what I have and what I will have.

Leads 2 spare of each I use
Twin CD players as backup for the D2, includes a flight box that holds 200 CDs.
Back up hard drive already at home to store all the tunes on and will be buying a second for on the road.
Ill be building a second play out system comprising of some cheaper CD players and another CM100 mixer, may even buy the new DDS80 and use the D2 as backup but a bit pricey at the moment.
Already got spare bulbs for the Martin Mania lights I just bought of my mate.
A pack of 13amp fuses.
Already got headphones as spare in case the queuing phone comes un-soldered for any reason.

I use 4 speakers so if one did blow can run the night on 2 which is adequate.

Nearly all backup equipment is what I used to use but have now upgraded. Agree it is not as good as my main set but as a backup I think it is all that is expected. Never had to use but done a gig a couple of months back using it to make sure was still ok and everyone enjoyed the night.

I have a spare amp racked up and ready to go, and multiple playout sources. I doubt all four of my speakers are going to blow, so not really much point in having any backups for those. Lighting wise, I carry far more than I use at any one gig anyway, so plenty of spares to chop and change.

as i mostly use pc now i guess you could class the DVD001 players as spare, very rarely used.
