Watch Out!, FAKE SENNHEISER RADIO MICS ON EBAY

I was fooled by this myself and bought some myself. Not knowing they was a fake copy of the microphone thanks to a member of the orange forum telling me about it. that a guy in Scotland was selling fake sennheiser EW135 cordless microphones. The buyer who i bought them from was from Greenock in scotland and this immediately struck me that the the microphones i bought could possibly be fake.

I did some research by doing a google search on identifying a fake sennheiser microphone. The mic capsule in the in a fake unit is wired to the microphone inside by two soldered connections.

The other identifier is when you open up the microphone to access the battery compartment there is a piece of metal below the battery compartment with 3 screws driven in. On the fake microphone the screws are crosshead screws. The real microphone the screws are torque screws (star shape screws)

Also speak into the mic reciever.... there is an indicator on the reciever. If that is hitting peak when talking the settings on the reciever and on the mic will not alter this. Thats another sign that the mic could be fake... because on an original sennheiser mic on any sensitivity setting other than max will not hit peak on the reciever.

The copies from the outside you definetely cannot tell that it is a fake copy. Unless someone on the forum told me i would have never of known.

These fake microphones are currently retailing at £179 with £14.99 postage. I dont want the same to happen to anyone else so i thought i would warn you all about this. This mics are a good enough copy to fool anybody they sound alright as well. But Nowhere near as good as the original units which i bought from sennheiser. I used one of the original ones and the sound quality is brilliant.

I have been onto sennheiser about this.... and the above information is what sennheiser have told me. I now own 3x genuine sennheiser EW135 Radio Microphones now which i bought direct from Sennheiser UK. All the fakes have been sent back to the seller for a full refund.

A little OT, but I was just browsing through some of the information in the DJ section of the ebay link above.
There should be a warning not to believe half the stuff posted in there!!!!

There's an absolute classic regarding the laser urban myth, the guy claims a laser over 1mw is illegal in the UK without a special license, which you can't get for lasers sold on ebay!:eek:
There's even a couple of blatent ads for dodgy import rubbish in there:eek:

I have bought cheap amps rated at many hundreds of watts that werent even 100watts.

If I do buy from ebay i tend to buy new after numerous bad second hand buys.

Bought a rope light that half of the bulbs didnt work.
Cost me £12-50 to send it back.

Bought a stack of CD's and none played all the tracks correctly.
When I looked at them it looked like someone had sand papered them to erase any scratches !

Bought a dual CD player that lasted one gig then stopped reading CD's !

I was buying quite a few new CD's off ebay until I found Amazon often did a better price without silly inflated p&p Some people are asking upto £3-50 on ebay to post a CD !

We live and learn !

I don't really see a problem if you stick to the branded stuff.

I bought my D2 on there, as well as my last 2 mixers, my last couple of disco lights, my last few CD players, my last amp and my last console case...all without any problems whatsoever.

Apart from that, I saved an absolute fortune!

I guess you only really know when it packs up after 3 months if its rubbish or not.

If your buying from business sellers then it should be different as you are protected by the sale of goods act.

E bay must have the largest number of fraudsters in the world I would imagine?

Even in my low number of dealings I have had constant problems with forgeries, copied CDs etc.

The ones to avoid definitely are those who say--note to ebay administrators--THESE ARE NOT COPIES --they always are in my experience:eek:

The only people to use are possibly Music dealers you already know or have heard of who go on there to offer discounts on line and record shops--they have been ok.

I would always want to hear a microphone on a gig before buying :)

I only ever buy stuff from sellers located in the UK.

If you buy stuff from abroad, you don't even know if it will work on our voltage, plus it costs a fortune if you have to return it.

Ebayer was a fool, and several people were behind it too. They left me negative feedback with a very rude comment - and it was them totally in the wrong. Nightmare.

In defence of ebay, I've spent thousands of pounds on DJ related stuff over the last year or so and have saved an absolute fortune. Recent buys include a Denon HD2500 brand new in a sealed carton UK model with serial numbers and guarantee £499, a Denon DNX900 mixer, again new sealed packaging UK model and guaranteed £330. Just last week I got a s/h Numark CM200 USB mixer in a very tidy flightcase for just £75 THE PAIR! and a year ago I picked up 3 Martin minimac profiles for £150 the three, I spent £40 on two new lamps (off ebay) a gobo rotation belt and a small plastic clip to fix them up. If these aren't bargains I don't know what would be.
You can also get good prices for quality items at times, but generally speaking, ebay is a buyers market place. If you're buying, you do need to be cautious and use your common sense, check and read feedback, travel and pick high price items up if possible. Stick to UK sellers and pay particular attention to the 'too good to be true' deals, they frequently are. Never buy in a business name and use paypal unless you're picking up and paying cash.

Of course ebay allowed me to send it all back, at my cost !!!!

Sadly the Cd player didnt get sent back in time and I had to keep it, so sold it back to ebay for £50 despite saying it wasnt working right.

Not at all, otherwise it would simply have been returned faulty.

It was sold as seen and described as unreliably loading CD's.

The bloke who bought it was delighted with it, i can only guess he got it fixed. I got positive feedback for it.

Lol...you're right about my general equipment expenses being low, but I was thinking mostly of my one-off expenses...such as the gear I bought a few years back for a spare CD console and also the gear for my move to digital. Apart from that, there were my CD players, at the rate of about one a year, nearly all of which I obtained on ebay at massively reduced rates. (yes, I know CD players should last more than a year, but for some reason mine rarely did...I think I was just jinxed!).

Any problems call your local trading standards.

I did this with a dodgy Internet Router that lasted 14 months--Trading Standards agreed with me--fortunately I didnt need to involve them after the retailer agreed to a replacement direct from the manufacturer following threats by me to shop them.

There's the answer. I use ebay to buy a lot of gear and haven't had anything fail yet. What I don't do is pay £60 for a CD player and expect it to actually work. (Actually I lie I did have a problem with an NJD Q-pedal that came as part of a quartet set. However, a solder iron, one triac and a fuse later and bobs happy with the flashy light things again.)

As for Sennheiser. If you are buying an EW135 and paying less than £350 new then its dodgy. If its not fake then its nicked.

You get what you pay for and if it looks too good to be true it is. I have two EW135's and one was new at £350 and the other cost me £200 second hand.

I will always defend ebay as if you ask the right questions you can weed out the dodgy sellers. Yeah my mate gave me this to sell, I don't know much about it as its not mine. Hmmmm that could be whay you are selling a quite expensive piece of kit you know nothing about. Which poor bugger had it nicked whilst loading his van/trailer.

Moral is if its too good to be true, its not true.

P.S The EW135 really is a lovely piece of kit, but I only have two for my vocal artist. They really are slightly overkill for just DJ'ing.
