View Full Version : 4 Ohm Base Bins

I have a pair of Studiomaster VX15 full range speakers 8 Ohm and I have seen a pair of matching base bins for a good price, but they are 4 Ohm can anyone tell me if there would be any problems linking them together, either in the normal way subs to tops using internal cross over or going into full range then into subs & what would the Ohms end up at either way.

I’m sure there has been various threads on Ohms law but:
It doesn’t matter if you connect tops to subs or subs to tops, the speakers will be connected in PARALLEL.
Therefore the total impedance (resistance) will be 2.6 Ohms on each channel.
If you put subs on one channel and tops on the other you will have 2 Ohms on one and 4 on the other.
Personally I don’t think that’s a good idea, what I would recommend is using an amp for the tops and a separate amp for the subs.

as Adam say 2 amps is the correct way to go (studiomaster do a crossover to match this system too!)
or you could run the system in mono with the mid/tops paralled one on channel @ 4ohms and the 2 bass in series on the other channel @ 8ohms but I don't think it would sound to good as the mid/highs would be louder than the bass
so best start saving for another amp & crossover eh?

WHat amplifier are you using I know mine will happily run at 2ohms but your amp will dictate how you can run these.
I dont think running the tops and subs on seperate channels is good idea as I am sure it will cause a whole heap of problems

as long as you are within the realms of the amps specs this would be no problem (done it loads of times) but he wpould still be better bi-amping this system

Yes indeed there will be a big increase in sound quality and balance with a crossover and two amps, but if funds are low then connect your amp into the sub inputs, and your tops to the hi out on the subs, and see what you reckon.

A PASSIVE crossover cannot be in serial it has to be in parallel.
If a set of resistances is in parallel, according to ohms law the total resistance (RT) is equal to the following:

When I first considered adding subs to my rig, I rang Peavey technical, and halfway through my intro, was given the question, and the answer! ;) :D They have heard this one before. How it was explained to me was to consider a multi way enclosure, which can in some cases have six drivers in there! Stamped on the back of the cab may be four or eight ohms. This rating is governed by the impedance of the LF driver(s), and within reason, what you add above it has little bearing. Thus, if you regard subs and tops as one box, ( when running out of the sub crossover) it follows the same rule. That's a crap explanation, but close enough for rock and roll. I'm sure Crazy K has given an explanation a lot like this on the thread from Karl D this week.

All I know is--Peavey Subs are 4 ohm---as are the tops
You run a lead from the amp to the sub then a lead from the sub to the sattelite top.
That gives 4 ohms at the amp if your using my Peavey equipment.
You need to speak to the sub manufacturer to see what ratings apply if they have a sattelite filter like Peavey.
