Well for those of you that couldn't make the show and missed the AGM on the live stream here's something that might interest you... ESPECIALLY for the youngsters on the forum.... You thoughts are appreciated and feel free to pass this information on to any youth organisations you might be a part of/involved in/know of... Dan is busy creating a mini NADJ website for the Youth Program but in the mean time here's some info for you....

The NADJ Youth Development Program & Youth Scholarship Program

2008 sees a new and overdue initiative from the National Association of Disc Jockeys (NADJ)

The introduction of our Youth Development Program is aimed at introducing young up-coming DJs to the exciting and varied world of DJ’ing and giving them the support they need to find their niche in this industry.

It is not an exaggeration to say that this is long overdue and now, our Chairman has made it his personal target for this year to ensure this program gets off to a great start and has the impact necessary to help develop DJs of the future. It will give them the guidance they need, not only in DJ’ing and music, but in the areas of audio and visual technical work, even starting and running their own business or working on contract.

This year NADJ are introducing a DJ Scholarship program. There will be two positions which will be decided by application and interview. Initial application can be done by completing the form, by voice message or by video message. The scholarship is aimed at, but not restricted to, those committed to starting or improving a career in DJ’ing who are 15 to 19 years of age.

The scholarship program will last a year and will consist of the following elements.

1) A 16 part, 8 week course encompassing all aspects of DJ work from music construction to AV signal technology. From mixing to business practices. These can be attended in different locations around the Country.

This course is well established and recognised across the industry as the best available.

2) Mentoring by the NADJ Youth Development Team which consists of NADJ members with a wide range of DJ’ing experience from mobile to club to radio. Advice and encouragement wil be available 7 days per week throughout the year by text, phone or email.

3) A program of work experience including a minimum of two sessions (ie. 6 in total) with each of the following: a mobile DJ, a club DJ and a radio DJ. Also a session at a professional mixing studio. All costs will be borne by the scholarship.

Unique and superb opportunities to see and experience first hand how a DJ works, what each of the disciplines is like and give the young DJ exposure to help him or her understand the opportunities available.

4) 1 year’s free membership of NADJ

5) Voluntary participation in NADJ Youth Development Program events around the Country, throughout the year.

6) All course fees and travel costs for the above activities to be paid by the scholarship.

Well, we will be doing events throughout the year, and even we don't know where we'll be doing them yet, so keep an eye on future developments, who knows what will happen!

CB - There most definitely will be a NADJ event in Glasgow and there is certainly a training course centre in Glasgow too, so you should certainly not exclude the idea.

Could be a golden oppertunity that may change your life......it would be stupid to miss out on it.......

Agree with Darren & Tony.

This is a huge chance to really make a full time career out of DJ'ing.

Getting all the top advise and support you need to get you to a professional level.

I'm sure many older members would agree if they were younger or if this was around was when they were starting out, they would have done anything to join the scholarship and be involved, myself included.

Because there wasn't something like, its great that we (Dan & James & Myself) have been given the chance to become part of the Youth Development Team and can pass on all the knowledge we have gained in various situations of mobile dj'ing, pub dj'ing, coorperate, wedding, clubs, radio, production etc... from turntables, cd's, mp3's, video's, karaoke etc...

I think it mainly it comes down to motivation and passion for the right person to want this chance.

To be honest Callum with an attitude like the one you've shown in this thread i don't think you'd deserve it anyway - as it seems you're just looking for excuses rather than looking at what this could do for you and your future..... (unless i've just read it wrong in which case ignore me - must be lack of sleep!)

And to add it's not just Mine, Adams and Dans experience that you get the value of (we are just the first point of call and to help you through) BUT you get the whole of NADJ and various large industry professionals (and organisations) from all areas of the industry from club, pub, wedding and radio to name a few... as well as technical people. You will learn new skills and improve any existing skills in all areas of the industry both hands on and business related.... It really is a bit kick start into the industry.

If someone in John O Groats or Lands End gets chosen, do you think we're going to make you drive to the midlands twice a week to take part in it?? :bang:

This whole project is not aimed at us trying to persuade you to apply. People have already said if they had had this opportunity they would of bit our arms off. If you haven't got that drive or ambition in you already to even think about applying already, then it probably isn't for you.

I really want to do it but I most probaly be able to get there by car (depending on the days/distance)

There are two places available for the scholarship. Its not a first come, first served basis, its who the Youth Development Team & NADJ choose to become the first guinea pigs :approve:

if its going to be somewhere far from here, then no i cant do it. Even tho the transport is free. I cant just go up to Glasgow or Edinburgh twice a week or so, my dad wouldn't let me. I would do it.

I can answer some questions here, as the person who wrote the scholarship. :)

Yes you can apply just by emailing an audio file or video file of your application together with the answers to the questions on page 1.

The reasoning behind this is that I do not want anyone to be hindered in applying because they don't feel able to complete the application in written form.

If you do it like that and you are chosen from your application to go for interview then we will ensure we get parental permission so don't worry.

There are just two scholarships this year. There are not unlimited funds you know!! This is not a cheap project by any means.

Initially all applications will be reviewed by the Youth Development Team and myself and those deemed appropriate will be contacted for interview.

This process is because the money available for this project is limited and that, together with the time and committmenbt of the Youth Development Team must not be wasted, so the successful applicants will have to have convinced us of their unswerving desire to follow the scholarship through for the whole year.

The courses are held throughout the Country and are either in the evening or at the weekend. In most venues there is a choice of either evening or weekend courses.

The work experience sessions will be arranged conveniently near to where the candidates live, within reason. The mixing studio day will be either in Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingha, Bristol or London. Once again travel will be paid for.

All transportation is paid for by the scholarship.

Yep two THIS YEAR. There might be more in future years if these first two are a success.

You don't pass a scholarship - you are awarded one.

In education it is often a way for someone who can't usually afford to attend a particular school or institution to attend with the fees being paid by a benevolent fund or organisation.

In this case it is NADJ that are underwriting the whole thing to ensure that there are no barriers to anyone having the chance to achieve what they are capable of.

i think this is a great idea and am surprised at how some people are seeing it as something that they might do if they can be bothered.

if you had to pay for this I am sure it would be into the thousands of pounds and i suspect that there are some parts of it that would be "money cant buy" type things.

Well done NADJ! Excellent idea. SEDA introduced a special youth/bedroom dj category of membership a few years ago to help encourage youngsters.
