View Full Version : Customer satisfaction ratings

Businesses offering services have a customer satisfaction rating.

This is the percentage of their customers who have not complained (regardless of whether the complaint was justified or not), and are therefore satisfied or very satisfied with their service.

It seems that most businesses only publish this figure internally for their staff, but do not make it available to the general public or use it in their advertising, presumably because in most cases it's not as high as they would like.

I remember when I worked in the bank our rating was about 66% against a target of around 70%.

My customer satisfaction rating is very high, so I'm thinking of putting the figure on my website to help sell my services.

Do you think this is a good idea, or can you see a downside?

Opinions please!

:)

That's why I didn't mention the actual figure...or you would have accused me of willy waving even more!

Personally, I don't think it's a great idea, and here's why...

Anyone who says they've got 100% rating is either telling porky-pies or hasn't had much experience, and publishing anything less than 100% to a lot of the general public will draw their attention to the 0.1% that weren't satisfied!

If you'd said one percent were happy, I'd have accused you of falsifying the figures to an unnaturally high level! :p

I think it's a good idea. I would think of it like a testominal but as a rating. I don't know how you do it maby put this on a testominal sheet when you send one out to the client after the gig or even better, at the gig itself???

Thanks for your thoughts Angela (and welcome back!).

My rating isn't 100%, and it simply isn't possible to be in business as long as me and have a 100% rating, as there will always be some clients who complain about the most unbelievable things, either because they are trying it on in the hope of getting a discount, or simply because they're idiots.

I've had some of these, although luckily not many.

I'm not sure that I agree that a published figure draws attention to the few percent who are NOT satisfied.

For example I don't think that "8 out of 10 owners said their cats preferred it" draws attention to the fact that 2 out of 10 preferred a different cat food...and that was an ad that ran for many years, so presumably they didn't find it to be a problem.

My feedback page shows a summary of about a dozen recent gigs, a snippet of the comments given, a small picture of the show plus a scanned copy of the customer's returned questionnaire.

I have a policy of displaying them all, even if not perfect.

Prospective customers can (and do) browse and make up their own minds.

In my booking pack I offer to share the originals with them at the planning meeting, and if, after the meeting, they wish to reconsider, I will refund their booking fee.

It's not happened yet! :o

Wahey, absolute cobblers mate! :D Oh my, that felt good typing that. ;)
Seriously, I think that's exactly what it does do.
Once upon a time, my cards carried the legend" Satisfaction guaranteed". Only twice did customers refer to it, and then in a jocular fashion.

I can think of more and more TV adverts that give a percentage of people who said the product worked better than the one they were previously using.

When you think about the money paid to advertising agencies to research & produce adverts, I still need some convincing that giving a satisfaction figure is counter-productive, but I am reading all posts in this thread with interest.

That is a completely different thing, though, and I'm not surprised a couple of customers referred to it in a jocular fashion, as "satisfaction guaranteed" is, in my opinion, a ridiculous thing to put on a business card...simply because you can NOT guarantee someone's satisfaction with your service.

There is no way you can always know that what you do will guarantee the customer's satisfaction.

What I'm asking about is completely different to that.

Honestly Rob I just dont think this is a determining factor for choosing a DJ or Entertainer.

Why not refer to all your happy satisfied customers all over Surrey etc and give the impression of a successful, reliable, efficiently run business with a friendly, personable DJ running the event--thats what people want in my experience.

Whilst I can see where your coming from Rob, I do not think it is a good idea to put ratings on. There are some people who will expect 100% satisfaction and seeing even 97% or 98% may put them off - just my opinion.
I have never seen the point in people putting likes of 100% satisfaction, 100% reliable or even testimonials for that matter. You are hardly likely going to publisise these figures or testimonials if they were poor - most who are poor would make them up making it completely pointless.

E bay seller--maybe:rolleyes: ... and come on, admit it.... how many of us go through the ebay ratings and ONLY read the customers feedback for the ones that weren't positive? I know I do so that I can see whether or not to rely on them (eg if the neutral/negative feedback was all saying 'slow to dispatch goods' I wouldn't be so worried if I wasn't in a hurry).

:)I think people will trust these figures more, because they are aware that the surveys will most likely be carried out by independent surveyors, and everything will be monitored closely by advertising standards etc.

Who is monitoring the mobile disco scene? I think we all know the answer to that! (Disclaimer : This is not an invitation to go off topic, I just think it has a tangent to this topic :) )

if you are simply calculating it on the number of complaints received then i suspect you will have many people who have 100%.
it doesnt necesarrilly mean that people are completely satisfied.

i have not had any complaints in the 15 years I have been doing this, and I suspect most others on this site are the same, but I wouldnt say this means that everyone is 100% satisfied.

in summary, i think it would not really mean anything to potential customers, especially as you are monitoring it yourself/

Beerfunk, assuming the customer satisfaction figure is on your site, although there is no reason for everyone to accept that figure, the same can be said about anything else on your site. How do they know ANY of it is true? Especially with some of the ridiculous claims you see like "The most popular disco in xxxx" etc.

Thanks for your thoughts Rich.

To be honest, I think you're mistaken in thinking that many people have a rating of 100%, and I'm amazed that you have 100% yourself.

You can probably count the number of discos on this site with a 100% rating on the fingers of one hand, and I think it's incredible that you've never even had a complaint from one of those idiots who complain about the most ridiculous thing.

For example, I did a gig in a pub on Christmas eve a few years ago, and the landlord complained that I was smoking...even though I'd done the same gig the previous year where I'd also smoked.....& he'd loved me that year and booked me straight away for the following year!

Another complaint stated there was one song I played which not many people danced to!

I also had a complaint from someone who said that I played the wrong version of their first dance...even though he hadn't told me that there were two versions or which version he wanted!

My most recent complaint was a couple of years ago, when the bride sent me an email to moan about the music I had played, and suggested it wasn't very danceable. I sent an email back pointing out that nearly every song I'd played all night had been from the list of requests which SHE had supplied in advance. Needless to say, she didn't come back to me.

Although these four complaints are all unjustified, they still reduce my customer satisfaction rating, as the clients still weren't satisfied.

However, I'm proud to say I've not had a single justified complaint in almost a quarter of a century...something I'm very proud of.

This made me think of a local butcher who has written on his van "Quality Family Butcher". I can't help wondering how many people think "Oh, I'll go to his shop. Much better than the one who has 'Rubbish Family Butcher' written on his van!". I don't think I'd trust someone who calls themselves "Quality".

Rob, I can see where you're coming from but, IMO, I don't think it would be productive. You would need to spend time and effort compiling such a rating and I think people would just see it as "another statistic" and ignore it anyway. And you'd need a yardstick to compare it to. Don't banks compare their ratings against other banks in league-type tables? For it to make any sense, you'd have to compare your rating with other mobile disco operators who aren't actually using ratings so there's nothing to compare you with.

Just my opinion.

Hi Dazzy,

Thanks for your comments...although I wouldn't need to spend much time or effort to compile the rating. I've done 1,600 discos & had 4 complaints.

Therefore I have 1,596 satisfied customers out of 1,600, so 1,596 divided by 1,600 multiplied by 100 gives my customer satisfaction rating, which comes out as 99.75%

However, most people (like you) don't seem to think it's a good idea to put this figure on my site, so it doesn't look like something I'll be taking forward.

As I said, Rob, my comments are just my opinion. I don't think that there's a right or wrong answer to this. At times I can be very pessimistic and, if I was trying to book a service which advertised "99.75% of Customers were happy" I'd think that it'd be my luck to be in the remaining 0.25%!

I think if you're serious about this then you'd need to survey every customer that's booked you and ask them to rate their experience with a figure of 1-5 or 1-10 and base your rating on this. Personally, I simply state that I aim to offer "the ultimate entertainment experience" but I know that you can can't please everyone. But I still try to!

and if the "I don't like this song" came from a guest and not "the paying customer" does it still count as a complaint?

I've never had a written complaint from a customer does that mean i'm 100% too??

apart from this songs rubbish the only complaints i can remember are "you're rubbish you won't do an extra hour for free"

and "you're rubbish you're not doing face painting and baloon modelling with the kids"

neither from the hirer neither in a formal context the latter the hirer was made fully aware that i am a dj not a childrens entertainer and don't do the mentioned things which they stated was exactly what they wanted as everyone had whinged about the loud over the top childrens entertainer the year before.

I had a complaint on Saturday night from a little Angel's mother, because I wouldn't play "Casper Slide" at a wedding during the buffet! Despite the fact that I had been told by the B&G, NOT to play any kiddies stuff! The week before I had a complaint from the Hotel, that I had taken up a parking space, and later in the evening, that despite having been offered a £10 note, I refused to play an extra half an hour! My ratings must be plummeting!

For example, I could state "100% of VectisVibe customers (who bothered to fill in the post-event questionnaire) say we are 'better' or 'much better' than other Isle of Wight DJs they've experienced" or "100% of VectisVibe customers (<disclaimer>) think we offer excellent value for money" ?

Ever wondered why they stopped running ads with that tag line? Times change as do people's attitudes. I also think it's a bad idea, as people these days do want a 100% record. Fair comment Steve, although I've seen plenty of recent adverts which state the percentage of people who think a certain product is better than anything they've used before etc...so there must be some merit in it.

I thought You were friends with everybody, Darren?

:sofa:

I am.

I just can't remember Vectis saying anything about this.

well in that case my original comment is correct- i've not had a complaint from a customer in the 15 ish years i have done this.
therefore by your standards it is 100%.

Yes Wensleydale, your customer satisfaction rate is therefore 100%.

Congratulations!

:D

You might be the only person on this site who has been in business for a reasonable time & not had a complaint.

Enjoy it while you can!

Not specifically referring to anyone on here, but the number of gigs 1 person has done in 10, 15 or 20 years could be vastly different to the number of gigs someone else has done in the same time (eg 1 person gigging once a month and someone else gigging 3 or 4 times a week)

That's a good point, Angela.

My 4 complaints were from 1,600 gigs...and none of them were justified, so I'm actually very proud of my record.

I think this is part of VV but im not sure.

Guilty as charged :o

Well let's hope that email addresses have not been taken from here then.

Well I put my hands up to a few for a handful of the regulars I couldn't put my finger on elsewhere. Vast majority via Google and one particularly brightly-coloured listing sites though.

It also has link s to here and says we are a friend of the site and I've only just heard of them.

Apologies - test code made its way into production. Now removed.

Ah! Now HIM I've heard of!

I just can't remember Vectis saying anything about this.

Didn't want to use the forum to discuss as in some ways what I'm doing is similar to MDD. I had knuckles rapped by Steve when I had the "directory beginning with U" in my signature so took the hint :)

Anyone who's been a member of either the generalist "directory beginning with U" or the specialist "directory beginning with N" will know from newsletters and site comments that an accreditation scheme was forthcoming.

I'm guessing this hit the forum as the "directory beginning with U" is now being readied for rollout to the rest of the eastern southern counties now I've finished the first pass on the south west and I've been inviting a few folks to think about joining.

I've mentioned on here a few times that I'm looking to drop the day job and I'd love to develop the entertainment side of the business but organic growth is tightly constrained by the sea  Hence I'm looking for other ways to achieve the same and this is something I think I'm good at.

So I'd like to continue to participate in the forum as usual but without reference to "my other projects" - hopefully that's OK as I like it here :o

I dont think so Rob- I'd say most do.

But as Angela pointed out I do less events than others on this site, or I could be completely new to it and my satisfaction rating would be 100%

I also think the length of time it has taken you to explain it says how much it will mean to prospective customers.

100% here too, I've never had a customer complain to me. Now, that doesn't mean every client has been totally happy every time, it just means no-ones every conveyed a complaint to me.

I think I explained it pretty clearly in the first post!

Apart from that, I'd be interested to see how many people post here to say they've done over 1,000 discos and not had a single complaint from any of their clients...whether justified or not.

Surely I can't be the only person who occasionally gets booked by idiots who complain because I "played one song that not many people danced to" or played "music that was not very danceable" - when it was virtually all from their own request list!

Well if Rob's on £100k a year (or more, probably, knowing him :D ) and he's working say 4 nights a week and taking a couple of weeks off for a holiday that's £500 a gig. Over 5 hours that's £100 per hour, or £1.67 per minute. No wonder they complain if he wastes £5 of their hard-earned by playing a dodgy song! They could've put 50p in the jukebox and got the one they wanted and pocketed the rest :p

Whereas over the border...

And you are well within your Southern rights to do so. :D
