I am booked next week for a wedding 7-12 and now the client has asked if we could also play some background during the meal

Having never done it before, how does this work? and how should i quote her, by the hour?

For instance, if i start to play at 3:30, once everyone has finished their meal, say at 5:30, do i stop playing and wait until the evening reception starts before i start playing again, or do i play continuous until my original starting time of 7pm?

If this is the case should i charge her for the time i'll be 'hanging around' or just charge until the meal has finished?

It depends on you the way you do it.

You could charge a one off fee or an hourly rate.

You might not be doing a great deal, but you need to be paid for your time.

I've had a couple of people wanting an early set up, so I charge them an hourly rate and then offer background music and the use of radio mics in with the price.

Also a good idea to find out if they have any preferences for the type of background music... you can often get away with playing slower songs by artists that you know they like, and similar, but they may like specific styles for background music - jazz and chill-out/ambient being popular for this.
