Do you ever get this?

Sometimes, a booking looks to have great promise and it's awful or even the other way round where a booking doesn't look great and turms out to be a fantastic night.

Yes indeed.
Booked for a 18th birthday party (not too fond of them) but turned out to be students from a private school (puases for darrens joke....) and had a fantastic night of playing all the really good classics.
I had the idea that they would be more into drumm and bass type *admin note -you would think after 2000 posts you would be familiar with the forum rules* =)

Well i had the exactly the same situation as this on friday night.

Under 11's football presentation night, got there was playing background music and i had thoughts that it wasn't going to go down well, so we started the disco with scissor sisters, Mark Ronson - Valerie and a few got up so i deciced to take a gamble and did some old school hitting off with Snap - Rhythm is a dancer, the floor was rammed, did a big club set right to end with Paul Van Dyk, ATB, N-Trance Ect, all the floor was rammed and the bar was empty all night.

At the end of the night the manager came up and said can i book you for the under 16's ( he was a different manager) i said yeah no problem told him how much , he looked abit shocked but said that i was worth the money and booked me there and then and just got the contract off to him this morning.

YEP !! happens a lot, am glad to say normally when not looking forward to a gig it ends up being a good night.

I did a gig at a pub once, expected a quiet night just playing music for people to listen to with maybe a few people dancing towards the end.

The pub Manager came across after an hour and said that the 2 strippers would be here shortly and could i play there CD's for them !

Yes, usually with agency gigs because I don't feel in control as I do with a direct booking (depending on how good the agent is of course).

Last night is a prime example, an agency Wedding in deepest Sussex with a small crowd most of whom were going to work the following day, so I thought it could be an early night.

I was due to start at 7.30 PM and arrived on site just after 6 PM, finally getting access and fully set up by 8.45 PM due to them over running. Bride & Groom tell me they are leaving @ 11 PM (I am booked until Midnight) and ask if I can play some Egyptian music they have on a USB key. I can't as it is in AAC format so a Bridesmaid has to find a laptop with iTunes on and we run it through the system.

Nice crowd and the dancefloor is healthily busy but I am still thinking to myself the gig will die after the Bride & Groom leave. Surprisingly it didn't, with the room still about 60% full at Midnight.

Very enjoyable, apart from the usual agent mistakes/lack of info and the fact that as I drove through Ashdown Forest on the way back I nearly hit a cow...:eek:

The guy who I sometimes sub for rarely gets it right. Take Saturday night. I'm told in advance it's a 30th birthday karaoke disco. When I get there it's a 21st birthday disco where the mum has placed restrictions on just about everything -"Not too loud" - "No smoke" - "No strobe lights" - "Mix-mash up the tracks all night (ie. 70s to now to sixties to dance to The Nolans)". Not sure how I was supposed to get a dancefloor going but with all the varied requests coming at me thick and fast the night seemed to fly over (it was 10.40pm before I had my first drink!).

Not exactly the opposite of what I expected - merely very different!

You never can be sure. You can take an educated guess but can still be surprised.
