New Scanners

Hello!

I'll be selling some lights very shortly, as i wish to upgrade my set-up.

With the money from these lights, i hope to buy an Acme Impossibled and a new trussing system. If i do buy the Impossibled and new truss, i'll then have a small, neat set-up consisting of 2 ACME Magic Gobos and an Impossibled.

I would then like to buy some scanners. I thought i had decided on buying 4 Acme Dynamos, however, realistically, i'm not going to be able to save approx £350 very easily. I know that typical flat mirror scanners are better in multiples of 4, however would only 2 dynamos be effective enough? If so i'd buy 2, then save up again for another 2 over time. If not, how about 2 barrell scanners?

For me lights are a personal thing. I have 4 dynamo and I think they are cracking lights. I get to test them this friday. :D

I used to only use 2 scanners and these were used to add some movement to my light show. Only buy what you can afford. But having said that it would be cheaper to buy 4 in one go.

Thats a good idea. Everyone is different has different ideas on how a show should look.

barrel likes light rovers will give you more coverage as it is a "split" beam so better if you only have 2.

The scanners will give you a concentrated beam - so it depends what you want really.

Do you have enough other effects to cover the dance floor if you have two main beam scanners going?

Hey Sam,

I understand that the barrel scanners would offer more coverage. The lighting i would have would be 2 Acme Magic Gobos (100w Moonflowers, surprisingly bright for 100w) and an Acme Impossbled. This would cover alot of area.

I think the flat mirror scanners would offer alot more movement than the barrel scanners, would you agree?

Hmm yes I do agree.
Sounds like you have enough "floor" filling effects.

So the scanners would be a good move as it would give you some sort of "visual" main feature - which I like (I use big moving heads as my main feature - so same principle beam wise).

I would suggest getting a scanner that has a good light output - along the lines of 250w will do nicely.

Also don't forget you can pick up some great deals on ebay - that is where my scanners came from that I will be using on the rig for the first time at the weekend :)

It seems like we have something in common.
My main lighting setup is currently 1xImpossiabLED, 2xPuma's (the 250w version of the Magic Gobo) and 2xMushroom effects which works really well together in my opinion.

I looked into adding scanners but was put off as older people don't like getting stabbed in the eye with bright beams of light. May look into getting a pair of moving heads in the future.

I'm saying with scanners are very hard to limit where the beams go. i used a pair for a few years and found they have a large scanning angle and is able to put light right at the back of a function room and right in the eyes of people who are trying to enjoy a drink. without creating your own programs via DMX there is no way to stop this from happening.

i agree that moving heads do the same thing but i would fully control the effects via DMX therefor would be able to keep the beams away from faces.
