What I usually do as it's 18th party just be yourself and be happy, have a laugh with the guests who ask for requests, as always. lol

But get ready for "my mate is a DJ, can he have a go". What you do is up to you. I get this a lot and when they look at what I use they want to have a go and its a simple, No.

It would be much cheaper, and might be a more sensible option.

I've never had an amp pack up on me at a gig in 24 years, but you MUST have back up, so if I couldn't afford a new amp as a spare, I would have bought a second hand one without thinking twice.

Remember - you might never have to use it.

Good luck with the gig, and if you can, post a report on how it goes, as this might be helpful for others coming into the industry.

There are plenty of amps, even new to be had for less than £200. Don't forget, it would be just to get you out of a hole for the night, so anything cheap would be fine.

Top tip for an 18th - make sure your music collection's bang up to date. Plenty of chart, dance, RnB, etc. Not that it's always that way obviously, but most seem to be :)

yeah my collection is up to date, I would prefer to do this sort of party because I am 21 and so the music side shouldn't be a problem..

If worst comes to worst I will just ask to lend the amp the culb uses and give them a tenner...as soon as I get paid next week mind I'll be getting a second hand amp...I will post a report on how it goes on monday with pictures if possible.

Jay, stop stressing about your amp!
Unless you make a total a$$ of wiring it up or thrash hell out of it, it'll be fine. Your more likely to get problems with CD's jumping or bulbs blowing.
If you operate your gear according to manufacturers instructions and following advice on this forum you'll be just fine with it and learn to relax and not worry about technical problems.

You're better directing your stress to your performance in terms of getting the music right, reading the dancefloor, avoiding gaps in music 'cause you're too busy ooogling a blonde and not paying attention:D , your use of the mic and interaction with the customers.

The most seasoned professional DJ's, presenters, actors, performers still get stage frieght, it keeps you on your toes so you give 100% to your performance.

Follow the advice given by everyone here and enjoy!:D

your right, the amp is new as is everything and iv'e followed the instructions down the last word, enough air flow etc...I think i'm just worrying because its my first gig..Iv'e done loads of house parties and theres no better buzz than when everyone runs to the dance floor when you put a good song on..I think i'm just worrying for nothing tbh...If anyone wants to come and slap me your more than welcome...lol..

Relax, be yourself, and even though guaranteed, you'll be making the odd one or two nervous mistakes to start with, brush it off as it will get easier and more enjoyable as the night goes on.

I remember my first gig. My amp blew about 2 hours into the gig and still had 3/4 hours to go:eek: :eek: :eek:
I got it second hand from cash converters or something (can't remember)

Anyway sorry not meaning to scare you but the unexpected can happen.

Just relax, have fun and don't shy away about talking on the mic (or don't talk to much!!!)

Don't worry, be yourself and if you are cr***ing it thats good, it means you care, trust me, an hour into it and you'll be having a ball. And the high when you finish, well money can't buy that feeling.

Oh and watch out, all my 18ths seem to like chart and 80's, so make sure you have some.

We've all been there and it's easy to say now but don't get stressed mate. If you go out the door worrying then you'll be a bag of nerves when it comes to the function itself. Try and chill out and look at the positives. You are going out with some gear to entertain people WHO HAVE BOOKED YOU and you are getting paid for it.

Once you start setting up your gear and people start arriving, you'll get the adrenalin. Get on the mic as soon as you can...I know it can be a bit embarassing at first as if everyone is looking at you but you'll get used to that. Also make THEM do the work for you mate. Announce over the mic that you are up for playing whatever they want to hear. 18 year olds will definitely tell you what they want.

Also, don't take it for granted that all 18 year olds listen to Chart, RnB and Dance. Have some Indie and Alternatives ready as someone will always ask. Basic stuff like The Fratellis, Arctic Monkeyes etc will work.

Lastly, DON'T let anyone play about with your gear (or try to). Stamp your ground straight from the off. YOU have been booked, not some wannabe so if you get the usual "Can my mate MC?" or "Can I have a go?" then tell them straight.

Hey guys, back home now so here to report,,,,First off I'd just like to say thanks for all your advice...I know I was stressing about my amp going but it never so that was fine...except the venue had one of those sound limiter things with the green-amber-red indicaters and if it went into the red everything went off. I tested the sound and thought....:Censored: because whenever I got the sound to anywhere near loud enough it went off, the way I got around it was to turn the bass all the way down on both levels. Luckily when it was loud there was still plenty of bass so that was that problem sorted.

I got there over an hour early to give me more than enough time to set up and when people started to turn up I was allready setup with some background music on.

I made sure I had all the lastest chart music but it turned out there was alot of girls there and they kept coming back for more and more cheese so I would say that 70% of the music was cheese, which went down really went and everyone was dancing. Which was a great feeling.

No one came up to ask for a go which was good but one or two girls did come right up infront of me dancing on the stage to which I politely asked to move which they did which was fine so nothing got knocked over.

All in all it was a great night and I don't know what I was worrying for, I was nervous to speak on the mic at first but then after I did it was fine and I think the more relaxed you are the better you sound.

I only have a couple of pictures my girlfriend took before any guest arrived.

All i would say is your speakers don't look evenlly spaced out or the stand is not in the centre of the stage,
Other than that the presentation donesn't look that bad.

my speakers were the big jbls's the others were already there...there was a big row of seats to the right of that picture and were along the edge of the dance floor thats why I moved everything up slightly. But next time i'll make sure there spot on.

It was a great experience and can't wait for the next one now.
