Well as many of you will remember my thread "Worst Gig of my life!" when my great Maplins speakers blew! Well since then I have had to return the amp (on the day of a 30th) due to one speaker being a lot louder than the other, and then another speaker! Well for the past few gigs it has been fine, and no problems, till last night!!

Set in a Marquee, 16th birthday party and they are regarded as family friends. I'm doing this gig for free, thank god, and decide to set up early. Test everything, and is all ok, except I keep getting shocks from the amp, and the mixer. This is really bad, but we put it down to static. The dad then touched the amp and screamed as he got another shock! I knew something wasn’t right, but wasn’t sure what! I had surge protectors etc, so just didn’t understand it! Before leaving, I taught the Dad how to play CD's, or plug their MP3 in, and he understood fine, as he would play the music till I arrived, (8.15, party stared at 7.30) This was my first mistake! He claims that the amp just turned itself off, for no apparent reason, but he soon started it up again. I start at 8.15, and get another huge shock (gave me a headache), then a girl grabs the microphone and throws it on the floor, as she gets a shock! It was mad, my Numark CD player, was letting of electricity vibes, (if you put your hand over it, you could feel the electricity, sounds mad, but it’s true!!) The amp then turns itself off again! Something isn’t right! I then notice that my left speaker (the new one, that I had changed), wasn’t producing any bass, but on the amp both dials were moving. (Last time this had happened the amp turned itself off, so I thought it was ok) checked it again by turning the right speaker off, and I was right, the left speaker had gone! It wasn’t even loud, these speakers had performed to audiences of 200, but there were 30 people here! I then decide to turn it on bridge mode, and just use the right speaker, but throughout the night, the amp kept turned itself off. Thank god they were all drunk and didn’t notice! They got so bad towards the end of the night, ambulances, emergency paramedics, and police had to come to the house. Some people were diabetic, others couldn’t move, sick everywhere, it was just mad.

What do you think I should do? Even though there was a problem with the electricity, nothing else turned off just the amp, and then the speaker blew! It was a nightmare; at least it wasn’t a proper party, like a paid gig! Can I take it back to Maplins again? Will they blame me? We have become more friendly with the manager, and brought a load of stuff from there so that helps…..Help and advice please:D

If the amp isn't grounded properly, not only should you get a full refund, but you also should receive an apology and compensation from the manufacturers!

How was the power being supplied to the Marquee? Extension lead from a mains socket in the house? or a stand alone power supply?

What was on the floor? Plastic sheeting? Wood?

It does sound like a amplifier fault, what Amp was it?

Erm the ground was grass, but my amp was on the several lays of thick wood.

Electricty was from two seperate scokets from the house!

Do you really need a 1600 w amp?

I use a Biema W220 600w amp which was £100 (Fantastic Value) and have a Warrior DA 800 as a back up! (I know, bit strange having the better amp as a back up, just haven't got round to swapping them over) which was £125.

I get my stuff from Electromarket and whybuynew (only buy the bits marked NEW)

Ok having a argument with dad, can you all please look at the maplins website and tell me the max power of the amp: pecifications: 4Ω stereo: 2 x 500Wrms 8Ω stereo: 2 x 250Wrms 8Ω bridged: 1 x 800Wrms Max power: 1600Wmax @ 8Ω

Am I right in saying that this it is a 1000w amplifier on a "standard" pair of speakers??

Its not a 1000W amp! its 1600W at 4 Ohms bridged. With the speakers you have it wll be giving 500W.

I had a mixer once that had a live 240v wire come loose inside and touched the audio out, it took out a complete 5k soundsystem, all the amps, processors and speakers. This kept giving shocks prior to failing.

Take the lot back charlie, get your money back if possible......good luck! :)

Sounds like it may have been a mains fault at the venue rather than the amp itself. Get yourself a socket tester they only cost about £2 and are well worth the money.

If looking for a new amp you can't go wrong with this for the price :
http://www.djpro.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=1186&shpsessid=2c30084eed2fb03933718596d0cdf930

I use one and (touch wood) it has never let me down. When shopping for amps and speakers watch out for people saying things are better than they are ie 600w speakers which have a peak power of 600w but only have 150w rms. (these figures are made up but just for example !!)

Charlie Brown

kk, first deal is to:

maybe pay an extra 50quid and swap the pro sound amp for this:http://www.djstore.com/item/amplifiers/numdim3.htm

or they take it all back to head office, check for faults and maybe I will get a refund, but could take 2 weeks, and my next gig is on the 14th June when I have two!! So bit risky, and just tested the amp and seems to be fine, very strange!

or just keep the amp and they replace the bust speaker, and the amp if I want..

what do you think guys???

plus it came as a package; the amp is 1600wat and the speakers can only handle 1000 max!!! Crazy,
little fact I found out, you may not know, Pro Sound (maplins) is manufactured by Carlsbro!!

I have a Warrior that I use for my monitors, it's a good workhorse and has been no problem for me. I've heard they have had a problem where they burn out where the bridge-rectifier is soldered to the PCB and start smoking!

another option would be:

Its possible that an earth wire could have come lose in an extension lead etc. especially ones with standard plugs you can open up.

If unsure on the cables buy new for piece of mind.

Come on folks, please read the posts carefully. Whether Charlie was wise to buy a full PA from Maplins is not the issue. He is now tied in to a further purchase from them, and I would advise him to go for a Numark amp, as they are well regarded items. This is why they want £50 from him, as the price difference between this and the Prosound. Yes in a perfect world, all the ones you have suggested are reliable, and excellent value, but I suspect Charlie is very unable to fund another £200 outlay at this point, while Maplins check his old amp. He is also of course looking for speakers, which is why he has asked fpr recommendations, but nobody has made any. Please also note that you have recommended amps of a true 1400w plus output, yet his original is only truly half that , so would not necessaily be very good for his already ailing speakers! I will give my expected answer, which is these as a bare minimum,
http://www.class-d.com/Product.aspx?PRO=532
or these if you are fit, and would like a bit of lkeeway should the amp get bigger.
http://www.class-d.com/Product.aspx?PRO=531
As for the shock issue, I suspect a dodgy extension cable, but at this distance, we're all only guessing.
Good luck Charlie.

Regarding the class D speakers should they run fine with the spec of the Numark Amp?

And again, my suggestion is the £50 excess for your amp, and the larger Class-D's are £160 PER PAIR! £50 PLUS £160 = £210, close enough for Rock and Roll! :D This gives you an awesome pair of cabs.

Thank you very much again, Charlie

Don't bother to link the Maplins cabs in as well, it's not good policy. They will not match the others, and will give very little useful increase. When adding cabs in parallel, it's best to use identical, or near identical ones. By all means go and see them Charlie, collection is no problem, you can hear anything demoed you wish, and it will be an education. :D If you do go, tell Peter there, " Cod Head " recommended them. :D

Most alarming thing here is that people were getting electric shocks. All dj's should use a circuit breaker to prevent this. They cost a tenner from any good DIY or electrical shop. A small price to pay to potentially stop someone being electrocuted. If you are getting shocks from electrical equipment - turn it off! Dont risk killing someone. If you dont understand electricity - dont mess with it.

I agree with Theo here,
I would advise you take the equipment back to the store and make sure they organise you a refund and some compensation after you have explained your situation and that several members of the public could of been potentially injured, They won't have a leg to stand on so to speak.

Invest in quality equipment and if it is looked after properly it will last you a long time.

Prosound = Pro Rubbish
Mackie, HK Audio, Turbosound, Warrior Audio, Wharfedalem, Class-D are all good brands you could take alook at but Mackie, Hk & Turbosound might just be out of your budget.

Quite right Tony, I was merely pointing out that Charlie could see for himself which cabs suited him better. I could be wrong, but I wonder if he was given a demo of the Prosound kit before parting with his hard earned? Simply reiterating the value of "try before you buy". Thing is though circuit breakers wont prevent you getting shocks as they're designed to prevent shorts not shocks.....................

When your using long extension leads you should use at least 4mmx3 leads though....With an RCD on the plug end and a good quality double socket on the other end with a polarity/earth checker fitted in 1 permanently..

From the remaining socket you plug in your normal distribution box with an other RCD with 15a circuit breaker for each of the sockets that you need...

From what your describing that everything was live and giving you and others shocks its points to an earthing problem.
This then caused the amp to allow live mains into the speaker circuit blowing 1................

When ever i do an open air disco I use 6mmx3 cable with industrial 16a plug connector on 1 end and a heavy duty RCD plug on the other end...
My distribution box has a 16a industrial socket on it, and i have 4 different lengths of cables that i can use depending on how far the socket is away from where Ive set up...

Safety is always a no 1 priority when I'm setting up.

I didnt test my prosound speakers, when i started and didnt know much I has about £200 and went in store with a few mates and it said 400 on them so I took them and as I found out they where only 200rms and 400max.

O well you learn from your mistakes.

Yes, beware the advertising ploy of turning a 200w system into a 1000w PMPO one! ;) :D

This will tell you that your lead is safe to use...
From the remaining socket you plug in your normal distribution box with an other RCD with 15a circuit breaker for each of the sockets that you need...

Good advice there, but I suspect a less exotic reason for speaker failure. It has happened before to this system. ;)

When i'm 18 im hoping to buy a reasonable sized nightclub and buy a mackie sound system thats bigger then...

Tom
26-05-2008, 10:03 PM
Size of sound system has nothing to do with it.

Why buy a 10k system if you are only playing pub gigs or small disco's up to 200 odd people???

I use 800 watts total and that is more than loud enough for most of the gigs I do and I still have some head room incase I need to louder. Or just add a sub. Job done.

Quite right Tony, I was merely pointing out that Charlie could see for himself which cabs suited him better. I could be wrong, but I wonder if he was given a demo of the Prosound kit before parting with his hard earned? Simply reiterating the value of "try before you buy".

Got the amp swapped and the broken Pro Sound speakers,

and just been to class D!!

Very helpful laid back guys (smoking in the showroom lol!), who gave us a demo on everything, and in the end we decided to go for the http://www.class-d.com/Product.aspx?PRO=531
And I told them Cod fish and they all started laughing!
Sounded great in the shop, no problem and Dad was very impressed, and was thinking of getting some himself!

Come home set up the Numark amp and the class D speakers. The build quality is very poor, right down to the handles, the cab is all twisted and is uneven on the floor!
Plug it all in and they sounded terrible, like diabolical!!
Sounded great in the shop, not at home
We decided to leave all the settings and play the same song, and boy did the Pro Sound, sound better compared to the class D they sound immense!!
Is there anything we could be doing wrong?
Spent 210 quid, on a even worse system!!!
And now my Numark CDN225 right side won't work, the disc won't eject:mad: :bang:
It's all going wrong guys!! any idea's.

Many thanks in advance, Charlie

Very surprising to find poor assembly Charlie! I would suggest set all the tone controls flat ( No boost, no cut). Then see if you can cut the Bass as much as possible, as I have these exact same cabs, and have to pull all the Bass off, unless I'm trying to show off with a modern dance type track.
If you're still not satisfied with the kit, get back in touch with Class-D , see what they say, and go from there. It's always possible to take your existing kit with you to see what matches it best. What mixer are you using? What tone controls does it have? Is it aN MMX-410? ;) ;) :D :D

I first went to Classs-D to just buy a pair of subs Charlie. Guess what I came away with? Two pairs of the same cabs you have, and a big amp!!!!:D Having heard them in the shop, it was impossible not to get them.

Whens your next gig?

Do your best to change your faulty items and if no success try and hire the equipment you need.

Good luck.

OK, first chance you get, speak to Class-D . If you've got a duff set of cabs, I'm sure they'll change them or sort you out in some other amenable way. I'd suggest taking your mixer with you if you go back ( and possibly the Prosound cabs as well. Gary will know all about them.;) ;) :D :D :D :D ) , there's no substitute for hearing the system you'll use yourself, rather than something different. As for the CD Player, sorry, not my area of expertise. :(

And i'm older than you Nathan - i am not patronising but I have been there and done that. And Key Stage 3s do nothing for you. Once you are in year 10 no one even rememebrs what you got. Your GCSE almost blend away apart from needing the minimum 5 gcses etc. And A-Levels will be the thing people actually look at.

But trust me. KS3 means nothing. yes work hard.. but my point is.. that it is not the be all and end all.

Anyway.

How about if possible you take what you would to a gig, sound wise only. Setup your gear then change them to the class-d speakers.

Also ask if the speakers are set to flat if running on a EQ. I have seen a few people selling speakers but have the rig running of a EQ to make them sound better than what they are.

Just a thought:confused:

Glad you got it sorted Charlie........I know it was stressin' you out! :)

The reason they sound bassier on the floor is because the LF (bass) driver 'couples' with the floor, this has the effect of amplifiying and extending those bass frequencies.

Try this:
Find a nice solid corner in a room and place the speaker facing the corner but away from it by about 30cm & then turn up the bass, you'll find that the bass will be around 4 times louder than you'd normally get coz the corner is acting like a huge horn.
Having the speaker on the floor is using a similar principle but not as pronounced. :)

Yes it does, just keep eating the Shredded Wheat Charlie, They take a lot of lifting onto stands! ;) For another £50, you could have thrown the stands away, and never needed subs. When I bought the 15SP's they ran these up side by side. If I was buying one set of cabs only to do most functions, I'd probably go for these.

Have to say, that the build and sound quality of the Pro Sound, are better believe it or not.

That I find surprising, I've not had first hand experience of Prosound Cabs, but I'd expect the top of the range Class-D to beat it easily.

Hmm nope, you guys probably won't believe me, but even the guy in the shop admitted that the Pro Sound speakers, sounded better...So has several famous band members;) and they know what they are talking about lol:D. In a way I wish I had never gone to class D, and brought a decent system, that will last a few years....

Looking at my books, I haven’t actually made any money lol, just spent over £2,200 and I’m in debt with Dad £600, AHAHAHAH spent more money for a worse system...not happy, may even take them back....
What amp do you use to power your cabs?
Many thanks, Charlie
