i am looking into adding a pair of bass bins to my set up.I have been looking at peavey to go with my peavey pv115s,but have came across the class d at a great price.

http://www.class-d.com/Product.aspx?PRO=554

My question is are class d products any good?
Will these bass bins go well with my 15 inch peavey pv115s.

You really need to do a direct comparison, that might prove difficult.

I dont have any problems with my Peavey Subs--allowing for the price!

The figure you need to be looking at is the sensitivity.

Class-D CD15 350W bass bin has a maximum SPL of 90db (put 350watts in and get 90db out)

Peavey Messenger UL 115 has a 1w@1mtr SPL of 99db (put 1 watt in get 99db out)

Sound pressure level doubles with every 3db therefore what this implies is that the Peavey is 3 times louder at 1watt than the Class-D is at 350watts.

You decide! :)

Tony I had a late night last night--

I thought we were talking Peavey Sub against class D sub?

If not a lot of difference--the Peavey Sub would have the built in high filter to correctly match the Peavey tops I would guess.

Is SPL the same as actual sound level as we hear it, though?

I'm not saying it isn't, but just asking the question.

Yeah that's right....Sound Pressure Level (SPL).

+3db is twice as loud as 0db
and
-3db is half as loud as 0db.

While I don't intend to get into a debate about sensitivity Tony ( partly cos you're undeniably right in that respect ;) :D ) nobody actually specified Messenger cabs, but actually according to the original post, I believe these are the ones?

and therefore these wouold be the subs?

an altogether lower spec animal than a UL series.
Without bandying figures about, Jaydee has those Class-D subs and loves them, I have the compact version with no complaints, but as always the best method is to hear them for yourself, perferably against Peavey or whatever you fancy, and make the choice with your ears, rather than your eyes, or wallet. ;)

Firstly, what does class D mean (ex hire stock i presume?) and how good are these subs? They look ok, but the drivers are not specified (eminence etc.).. Don't think i would want to buy something i have not heard for myself, but they are cheap?

Definitely looking for a couple when i get my trailor on wednesday as i have an amp rack, amps and wavves extra bass unit not being used. Any one got suggestions? i might just get one really good bin (18 inch) for now as I'm broke.

Anyone heard one of these?

http://www.thomann.de/gb/the_box_ta18.htm

They're certainly cheap, and 133dB SPL is impressive, but I've no idea if they're any good. If I remember rightly I think Eddie (Vibrant Sounds) has used some "The Box" (Thomann's own brand) speakers before and seemed to like them.

Can anyone shed any more light?

Yeah your absolutely right Peter the 'PV118 Sub' would be the right one.

The 'PV118' Sub would be nearly twice as loud at 1watt than the 'Class-D' at 350watts.

I am not knocking Class-d they provide solid products at a great price and have many very happy users. They also seem to be quite reliable and robust so what's not to like?

I just wanted to throw a bit of info about SPL figures into the debate so an informed decision can be made on what to choose. I am not for a minute suggesting that this is the case here, but a lot of people just look at the WattsRMS figure and not much else. :)

Actually I'm not sure that's right (although I'm more than happy to be corrected as I'm certainly no expert!)

As I understand it, for the same system (speaker plus amp) it takes double the power to produce a 3dB increase in SPL, which is noticeably louder but nowhere near double. To double the volume you need somewhere between a 6dB and 10dB increase in SPL (because of the logarithmic (and subjective) way human hearing works), which needs 4 times the input power!

So 99dB is roughly twice as loud as 90dB.

Have a look here:

Anyway, back on topic... :p

In conversation with Class-D they suggested that their figures are actually higher than advertised, it would be very interesting to do a side by side volume test with some test gear.

I was just wondering how long it would be until Pete posted.

Test equipment is certainly the best way of comparing sound devices, but a simple A/B test with your own ears would tell you which was louder, bassier, less distorted etc. Bit like your Class-D v Mackie thing you did a while back.

Did Class-D give any clue to why they don't advertise their higher figures? :)
