Hi all,
Before I start this, can I just say that I am not mentioning any names and this is just from an observation ok.
This has probably been done a 1000 times and if so then I apologise but I have noticed on this forum and others to be fair, that it SEEMS like some people think that they are better than others. I know it's life and it happens, everyone likes to think that they are the best at what they do. Some people may take criticism kindly, some may not. Some may take on board tips from other people and some may just think that their way is the best and that's fine. Each to their own and all that I suppose.
What gets me though is when you are reading through a thread and you see people making (almost) snidey (but polite) comments at eachother, almost as if there a little war going on.
I'll be honest with you - I don't have an ego, I never have. People tell me I am good at what I do and I believe them but it doesn't make my head grow with ego. I know that there are people out there that may do a better job than I do, may have better equipment than I have etc etc etc BUT I like to think that I am doing everything the best I can. I offer advice when I can and if it is taken on board then that's great. I do not claim to know everything and I will listen to what other people have to say.
As I said...it's life and it happens but I find it uncomfortable sometimes when I see people on here trying to get one over on eachother.

Oh it's much better fun if you DO mention names.....come on, let's have it! :D

No, sorry. I don't want to mention names because I for one, respect everyone else on this forum for what they do as we are all in the same field as they say. I just wanted to make the point that in my view, we ALL think that we are the best at what we do and that's correct in my book BUT I don't like to see people trying to outdo eachother.
If it looks like this may get into a nasty thread then please feel free to close it.

That's all very well, but what would you say if forum members here were actively encouraging others to improve in certain areas? Is that snobbery too, should they just mind their own business and let it be?

Im not one for tittle tattle or pettiness :approve:
You are one of the people on here i have met in person, which always helps with members on forums.
I'm here primarily to gather business advise and collective information.
If i can give it back then i will (try). Although not the most experienced, I Know more about some things than others but i try not to show off about it.
We are all good at different things. Its all about improving what we are not good at to better our business skills!

I think it's ok to give your opinion as long as you are not nasty with it, I think there is a way to slag something off without hurting anyone, using the right smilie can be make all the difference! :)
I know I can get a bit over the top when discussing sound systenm issues, I really try not to upset anyone but it's a subject very close to my heart, at least I know my faults and often use the edit option to reign it in a bit! :D
:heart1: LOVE YOU ALL, BTW! :heart1:
EDIT: Just like to say that I have had my eyes opened so much by this forum, my service, buisness and set-up has been much improved because of it. It should be held up as an example of how a forum should be run! :approve: :approve:

me and tone snipe all the time at each other .....infact we are well behaved on the forum but you should here the phone conversations .....that said it is all very much tongue in cheek and not one word meant in malice , not saying it is the case but sometimes on here people know each other "off forum" as well and there is some little in jokes that fly around , admitedly this does come across as them being horrible, but in some cases it probably is i concede although not from this sort of banter as it's a very easy industry to get a "my dads bigger than your dad attitude"
personally think Daz particularly and a few of the other experienced deck knights do a good job in usually kicking this into touch quite quickly ,
as ive said on many occasions there will be alot of guys on here that are technically much better than me by a country mile...... but i don't want to be better if i did i'd never be happy as there is always someone better than you or will be shortly ..... i want to be DIFFERENT and enough people have seen my show now and commented that they have never seen a dj do certain parts ever before that i know im on the right road.
i try and be positive in what i post and if i cant be ... i dont pass comment. thats just me though and without people saying what looks bad or is bad practise in their opinion the forum would be very stale.

I don't post very often but when I do its usually just to show my superiority to Darren @ Solitaire because I dislike Guiness drinking short people with "goatees".
They scare me, a bit like clowns.

See I've been mentioned a couple of times already, once in a jokey way and once in a serious way.
I'm not sure, but maybe this thread was aimed at me?
Perhaps I am guilty of coming over that way, but I certainly don't mean to be. Those that have met me know how passionate I am about this industry, not just from my own business point of view, but from the point of view of improving the publics perception of us and also getting the DJ to act like a businessman and to improve money.
I spend a lot of time in my office trying to improve on things for me and the industry, so if this is snobbery, then fair enough.
Ultimately, people will have a bit of a go at each other which is to be expected sometimes, but we do try and keep it friendly and a useful site.

Well Daz, if it is aimed at you, all I can say is that people don't know you very well, and I suggest that they actually have a good chat with you, and they will hear your passion and commitment to the cause come shining through.
Before anyone calls me an ass-licker - I don't hand out praise willy-nilly, I'm usually a bit of a sceptic, but I will give credit, where it is due.
Find me a forum that does not have snide comments. Then this thread would be worthwhile imho....

Some of us must have guilty consciences, cos I thought it was aimed at me, particularly in the light of my regular jibes at a Legendary Southern DJ/Quizmaster. :D
I don't have the most expensive or flashiest gear, and I'm a lot of a luddite, but I do have experience, lots of it, and some earned the hard and expensive way! I hope I never appear too condescending when passing it on.

You will always find comments made in forums which from the outside can look bad, although they are not intended as such, i myself have looked at threads on this site (and Others) and thought to myself, hey that person is going way too defensive and taking things personally, which to me they aint been aimed like that.
Forums are areas of communication, one item as such is debate, its healthy to debate on things but only if you can jump out of the box and look at both sides of the debate. I think we should all try this approach before we do get into slagging matches or superior complex throwing etc....

Just like texting, when typing on forums its easy to misinterpret the context and sentiment people are thinking in at the time of writing.
Having used several forums for different intrests I can say that this is generally the most helpful and friendly, which may not be an accurate reflection on some of the DJ's in our industry.
How many people have found the same friendlyness from other DJ's they have met outside the forum? Im thinking the good ones come on here and share knowledge etc whilst the ones that think they know it all stay in their dark rooms until gig time.
I have noticed that some threds are jumped on and deleted far too quickly when most other forums would let the debate roll on but thats just the part of me that doesnt like censorship complaining.

I apologise for starting this thread guys. It was an observation at the time and just as someone else mentioned, it's just like texting etc and words on a screen that can be taken the wrong way by some people. I am still relatively new on here compared to a lot of you and I am still getting used to some of the banter and humour. I am not the best at trying to suss out people on forums, give me real life anyday.
I probably worded it wrongly too when I said "Snobbery..." as that doesn't seem right and my head isn't all there at the moment to try and explain myself. If some people think this was aimed at them then I apologise. I'll be honest, I had two people in mind when I started this and they were Darren and Rob. It just seemed like you two are always at eachothers throats but I guess I am wrong, so I am sorry for that. I aint out to cause offence to anyone whatsoever ok guys. I am sure (as Kenny Everett used to say), it's all done in the best possible taste.

Yes, it should Rob and whoever....;) :D
What i don't get is why you felt you had to start a thread about it?
as you could have just easily talked to Darren about it - if you actually felt that it was a big issue.
But take away the comments that go back and forth.. and this forum would be exceedingly boring - as would any forum.

Hi Gary,
You are entitled to your opinion, but I agree that some of your wording in the original post was probably very different from what you were actually trying to say.
In addition, I don't agree that myself & Darren are always at each others throats. Of course we don't agree on everything, but there are also plenty of things we DO agree on. I can certainly think of one or two people I have more disagreements than Darren.
For the record, I have a lot of respect for Darren. Otherwise, I wouldn't have exchanged PMs with him, spoken to him on the phone, met him at PLASA or roadied for him...in fact he's the only person from this forum who I've met on MORE than one occasion!
I hope this clarifies the situation.

I do feel that there is snide remarks sometimes on this forum and to put it simply I stay positive and ignore them all because the general public, who can view these forums, will look at them, check out their company and think how unprofessional they are coming out with snide little remarks. You will always get people who believe they are better than others, look at my w**ly, mines bigger than yours kind of attitude. I find it's most important how to deal with it.

This forum is the best! I love it! In fact I spend too much time on here. I get told off by Jan.
As to the thread. Am I a snob? Yes - I'm not ashamed to admit it. Am I the best at everything I do? No - of course not. There will always be those who are better and those who arent as good and there are also so many variables: equipment sound and lighting, mike skills, personality, business acumen, transport etc etc. Also our degree of experience or expertise constantly changes. I was taught a long time ago - be nice to people when you are on the way up coz you will meet them again when you are on the way down. Humility is a good virtue. I have a copy of Desiderata hanging on my wall and it has been my creed for the last 35 years.

Just a couple of pence worth here as I thought I'd mention that the forum is an 'OPEN FORUM' for opinion, general chat, advice, and keeping in touch with others in the business. Let's face it, DJing can be a tough business and being able to throw a few ideas about with like minded people is a good thing but, like any busines sor social arena, there will always be banter and with banter comes a wide range of personalities - some of which can be mis(an wrongly)interpretted.
I for one felt like an absolute pratt a while ago when, after giving an answer to a couple of threads I got some, what I considered 'nasty' comments back from someone who is probably reading this and knows who they are and I felt terrible for a few days - I almost stopped coming here.
I deleted dozens of my recent entries but then I thought - hang on a minute, I'm entitled to my opinion as is everyone on here. And, as I have read by various people, the person who was a bit OTT with me, aparantly, is an ok guy, aparantly.
I've seen loads of forums where banter turns into heated slagging matches but here it tends to remain friendly.
