View Full Version : Could you cope?
Let me explain.
Recently I did a 50th birthday party. I have just found out that he was a DJ also. . I didn't know at the time but I was getting vibes as he kept look at my gear and talking back to his wife??? At one time he got really close to see what I was using, hadf a good look and went  and walked away. From then on I was a little worried about what to play. But in the end I kept him on the dance floor all night till pack up time and when I said this was my last song he was one of the people to go "ohhh....one more". Anyway back to my original question.
Lets say that someone books a DJ for an event. Also there will be a lot of other DJ's turning up at this event aswell, not in any competition, just to have a good time ad lots of :beer1: :beer1: :beer1: to help the moment.
Like me I started to bottle it BUT, how would any of you lot cope if you found out that there were somthing like 15 other dj's for example in the same room as you???

It would make it a lot easier as if they were any good, they would appreciate what you were doing.

Funny you should ask. I done a gig last friday for a 80th birthday. The person whos birthday it is had been on the radio (was well known in local radio apparantely) and has dj'd most his life. (till he turned 60). All his family were entertainers of one sort or the other. He made a point of making this known to me a couple of times. I was really nervous beforehand. In the end I went in and done my usual. He came up near the end, tipped me and thanked me on the microphone. He said it was one of the best nights he has ever had. The whole crowd gave a huge round of applause at the end.
This is not meant to be a brag but to point out if you are good and successful at what you do it does not matter who is in the crowd. Just be yourself !!

I've done a few gigs for other DJs, and quite a few where other DJs were in attendance. Just do your thing and don't think about it. What I have noticed is that I've never had a true 'working DJ' come up to me using the "I'm a DJ" line. That seems to be reserved for all the wannabes.

I've had it before (not 15 - one or two!), and some will be friendly and keep their nose out. However, you'll probably find that the ones who try to tell you what to do, or don't seem too friendly, are not pro - and are a bit jealous.
Either way, it is something that might distract you, yes. Only through experience, and therefore increased confidence, have I managed to learn to ignore them! :)

All you can do is give it your best,
I love it when im dj'in at a function and someone comes upto me and gives me the big ego that they are a dj and that they have this bit of kit and they have dj'id here and there, I just turn around to them and say "So how come your not doing tonight then?" I dont mind if they are guests there or i am doing a dj's wedding or another function its when they come upto you and give you the big ego speech is what annoys me.

I have worked for other djs and known before the event.
Each time I invited them to look over the kit and asked if they wanted to play a set themselves. They were all interested in the gear but declined the offer of playing with it.
They all appreciated the music played and commented favourably at the end. If they are professional and you are polite and up-front, there is no problem working for djs.

Been there, done that!
I had to DJ at a party and there were at least 20 well known DJ's, I was only doing the warm up but I was crapin' it.
Those that are old enough will remember the names, Chris Hill, Sean French, Froggy, Chris Brown, Robbie Vincent, Steve Walsh among others.
I was about 18 at the time, it was my cousin's gig who was a Soul/Jazz-Funk DJ and knew this lot. While he was networking for about 2 hrs I was left in charge of the Rig and the Music!

I would hate the idea, simply because I know how I criticise other shows (to myself of course), and would expect them to be doing the same.
However, as already pointed out, any half decent DJ in the audience would be very unlikely to comment to your face, although you don't know what they are thinking, do you??
I suppose if you have reached the point in your DJing career where you consider yourself pretty much perfect, then this won't bother you. I haven't, and it does. :)

It wouldn't faze me and would probably make me wana pull out all the stops. They'd criticize anyhoos, so why not enjoy it and give 'em something to think about?
Back in my younger days, I'd regularly have other DJs in the audience. Usually mobile jocks who'd finished a gig and wanted to hear some decent music.:p :p :p

I wouldn't be too bothered about playing at a gig with other DJs there, with one exception.
I'd be really hoping that they didn't come up to look at my gear, start telling me what they think I should play next etc, because this has actually happened to me, and it was a real pain.
A few years ago I had a Sunday residency at a local pub which was also frequented by another recently retired local DJ. He was quote well-known locally, having worked on the local independent local radio station for a number of years. I also remembered listening to him on one or two of the big London pirate stations back in the early 1980s.
Anyway, he would sometimes come up to me when I was playing something current & say something like "I don't want to tell you how to do your job BUT..." He then went on to tell me I should be playing all the old classic stuff.
This made me very angry. I thought "How dare you tell me what to play" After all, I was the one working, not him...he was retired! Also, he had no knowledge of the music format which the management had discussed with me.
I know not all DJs would be like that, but for that reason I'd probably rather there were no DJs at any of my functions.

We've got a wedding booked for another DJ in December, and there is supposedly going to be around 5 - 6 other DJ's there too. Should be fun :D

It doesn't really bother me, although I've not had a huge ammount of DJ's together. A few weeks ago I had a DJ come up to me and he gave me his card in case I neeeded cover for any disco's. He said he was semi-retired but wanted to keep his hand in, and just wanted to do a couple of disco's a month. He was very complimentary and sometimes it's nice to meet other DJ's in the local area, can only be a good thing IMO. :D

It's definetly good to network and try to get along instead of competing. I had quite a quiet summer last year and got quite a bit of work from a dj I know down the road. This year it is the opposite and I am finding myself giving him quite a few gigs. Help each other out as has said before 'there is enough to go round'.

I've also had this, and it always makes me laugh.
As if I'm going to pass work to a DJ I know absolutely nothing about!

I've done it plenty of times and it doesnt bother me in fact I like it. It doesnt matter whether it is dj'ing or any other trade or profession you will always get those Harry Enfield types who come up and say "You dont want to do that!" For every one of those there are more who will come up and have a friendly chat. I think some people on here are too sensitive and defensive.

Good for you! That's the spirit! Have confidence in your own abilities and be prepared to accept that there may be people who are better than you are and praise them when they do well. At a gig I am always happy to listen to advice from others - whether I take it or not is up to me!

Somtimes I think that with out being to up myself.

Same here. To be honest I don't see a lot of good dj's round my area. But some of the ones I have seen and I like I will go up the DJ, say hello (with out the "im a dj line") and tell him he is doing a good job. For me that would bu such a confidence boost.
Edit.
Ohh, by the way. The reason I started this thread is because one of you will be my wedding DJ and some of you will be the guests (if some of us still get on that is lol).
Just wanted to know how you would cope if you have a load of DJ's from the same forum watching you.

This one? What happens after all the fights break out? Wrong badge on the gear, wrong music, wrong clothes! :D
Price is not an opition. I would have about £1500 set aside for entertainment which must include a small pa for speach at the wedding breakfast and all that but thats years off yet. lol.
No brand snobbery at all. Just make sure it's loud and clear. There could be a good few hundred people going if I get it my way. ;) :D
Now I have giving a price I don't want people saying "yeah I can do a wedding gig for £1000". lol. You have no chance. To be honest I would like a real quote as what you would charge any client but with mates rates. lol. ;) :p :D
Anyway. Moving on. lol

Tbh it wouldnt bother me that much. If you know your job well and everyone else is dancing what does their opinion matter anyway?
It really doesnt. Ive only ever had one person come up and tell me how to do my job. The type of function i was doing... it was one of those where they didnt want any cheese so.... I didnt play cheese.
This dj come up to me.... he had gone through his best efforts to give me a list of songs he wanted in a specific order.... all cheesy songs! my dancefloor was full. I said to him the client has specifically requested that i dont play cheesy music will that playlist help? It wont but thanks anyway. He didnt say much he mumbled and went back to his seat.
I had a lad come to see me last night. Hi Could you give me a bit of advice ive started to do a bit of mobile dj work myself and ive got my first gig coming up. His mum and dad knew the brands and were pointing at my lights and that and sound system. I give him some advice been friendly as you do. His mum come over and thanked me for a real good night and how she was telling her husband about the kit use been good gear. and said thanks for helping my son out. I said anytime. If he needs any help let me know and give her a business card.
If anyone on here wants to come on one of my gigs depending on the gig anyone would be more than welcome and ill get the drinks in.
as Excalibur and Jaydee both have been to one or two of my gigs.
