Plastic Rack Case

I am forever trying to make my rig lighter. I am just about done and somthing got me thinking.

Has anybody used a plastic rack case or anybody have any experaince with one??? I have a 4U SKB rack case and it did me very well (till I got the Denon stuff). It takes 2 people to lift my current rack case (or one if you feel like a man, Rob not included:p ) and to be honest it is really taking its toll. My Deck stand is now taking the strain and its starting to bend. :eek: I don't want to buy a new deck stand as the one I got works fine.

I hate the look of them them compared to normal rack cases.. but thats a personal preference.

I use one for my backup amp rack, but I just feel like its going to break if I so much as knock it on a doorway, mine is only a cheapo prolight one though.. so the SKB/Gator ones may well be better built.

On a similar topic, im on the look out for a rack to house my rack mount base unit. It is quite deep, and the standard cases aren't quite deep enough for it. Anyone know of a supplier for bigger cases? Not fussed whether it's plastic or full flight.

I have had a plastic rack with two amps, and two other effects for about two years now. No problems if not dropped though as they can shatter.

Racks are largely used for protecting equipment.

Protection, convenience and because flightcased equipment looks a million times better and more professional.

It also takes a million times longer to set up. much better when everything is pre wired and protected. neat and compact etc.

Just a case of plugging in one plug and attaching the cables in to the speakers.

Personally, I'd advise you to put your amp in a separate case as it will really heavy with it all in.

Tom.....I looked at quite alot of racks before getting the one I liked...and a few of those were plastic.....they looked nasty and also not built to last.

If your going to put x amout of £'s into your playout system....it need's to look like it can do the job....IF you happen to drop it one day (hope you dont BTW)...IMO.

I understand where you are coming from. It's just weight at the end of the day. I like my wooden rack case but its so heavy :(, and I still need to buy a backup to go in it but for that I would still need a new rack case. :(

I'd thoroughly recomend those Protex cases, they're dirty cheap and no real difference in quality to the Kam cases... the only part that's a bad design, is that you can't slide more cage nuts into the vertical mounting part, so if you wanted to rack say 4 x 1U units there wouldn't be enough there to put a screw in every hole.

I use one of the SKB DJ consoles had it about 6years now maybe more been bashed banged and dropped and still in one piece only issue I have had with it is top and and front cover (all in one) is padded material. It does have the usual marks on now from being plastic but still looks neat and tidy on stage.I will try and post a picture of it in its present state.

I'll agree with you there!! I wouldn't buy another one the same, but as for using plastic cases (SKB) found rack was bit lighter and it has stood up to the test of time.I originally housed a powered mixer denon dnf2000f players pulsar zero 4000 controller radio mic receiver and a peavey kosmos.
