NJD Star Cloth

I'm looking to buy an inexpensive Star Cloth - as much as I love my light screens they are a little big for some gigs.

Does anyone know anything about the NJD Star Cloths - they are supposedly made from a "treated wool serge cloth" rather than the flimsy nylon that some of the cheaper Star Cloths are made from. Does this fabric look ok?

I use the skytronic skirt, not sure what it's made of comes complete with controller and bag and it is DMXable all for £90.00 and remember when the room is dark all you see are the LED's so yes looks good

There is no "generally" about it, the cheap nylon ones look horrible whether it is dark or not! :evelgrin:

I disagee Steve - they look fine in the dark as you can't see the material.

That said, looking back to when I had one of the Prolight skirts I never seemed to use it in a very dark venue. Maybe that's why I didn't like it.

I had a prolight one with all white LEDs on it, but one night I plugged it in to find half the LEDs were not working. Took it apart and found no obvious wire breaks but tested some of the LEDs and sure enought, loads of them were dead.

Just bought another one, the RGB version and so far so good. I guess I just got unlucky with the previous one.

The RGB one does look good in the dark. The only downside is that it doesn't have an 'auto' mode so until the music is loud enough it's pointless having it on.

No, I had a Prolight one die on me completely after just over a year. I then had another one and the leds started to go after a few months, so I bought the S&H booth, which is the best move I've made.

The only reason I went for the RGB Prolight was - it was a Thursday night when I tried to fix the dead one and the only skirt I could find that was definately 'in-stock' was the RGB Prolight. I am quite happy to spend more money on quality but in this case I had to have one by the Saturday.

They certainly do and in different colours too. You can even buy the (Shaun :sj:) frame and source your own cloth.

I would get the cloth from them though as the beauty of it is, they fit exactly whereas I've found with the cheaper starcloths, it's a bit hit and miss.

There is only one booth, but you can pick and choose whether you want pealights, leds, dmx cloth, coloured leds, different coloured cloth etc

The prices are £700+ inc Vat though. A lot of money, but I've never heard anyone who's bought one say they weren't worth it.

probably not but if it covers your gear, who is going to know what it's made out of and who did it:confused:

As much as I love spend money on my buisness, this is somthing I won't spend my money on.

In fact there is a local metal work shop round where I live. I guess it won't hurt to design somthing, go over and ask how much it would cost to make one up.

I wouldn't mind paying top dollar for good quality. In the past I've tried to cut corners only to find myself replacing items quicker than I'd like. You usually get what you pay for. :o

I've got an Ultimax DJ stand and I'm have to do the same as Ollie and I'm getting a frame made for my LED skirt but to give it more shape the last 30cm or so at each end will turn back @ 45 degrees

I see where you are coming from but as a DJ I would like my sound to be the best as possible.

The mixer would of had a long time spent on it as in design, what components to use ect. I have the Denon X900 and I got that for £430. Im sorry but there is no way I would pay £700+ for a frame and a bit of material over the front of it. I reakon if I shopped around I could get 2 mixers for that price.

And I wouldn't have bought the DNX900 as you are never going to use half on what is on there. Why didn't you buy the 500?

I got the X900 because I wanted the Digital inputs. The HD2500 has digital outputs and I wanted to use them.

As a kid I was told by a doctor that I had sensitive ears. This wassaid when I was having grommets in.

I can easily tell the difference between using the digital ports and the phono ports from the HD2500 to the mixer. The digital ports sound so much better than the phono ports. Just the overall sound is clearer to hear.

Yes I do believe that yout kit should look but I thought that a DJ was supposed to play music??? This is why I DJ and my roadie controls the lighting. Lights are just an effect to add an atmosphere. This is why I spend more time and money on the audio side of things than lighting.

I wasn't saying you are the bad guy, just explaning why I got the X900 mixer.

I do agree a lot that everything does count when out on the road. I am just more of an audio than a lighting person to be honest. :)


As far as I remember I have pm'd you twice for advice and phoned you once. I pm'd you because I didn't see the point of posting a thread for a simply reply and the phone call because I didn't know who esle to talk too. I took a booking while at work and was a but stumped on what to do.


To be honest I think I may keep quiet. All I said was I don't want to pay £700+ for a booth, and all this kicks off. :(

I am just saying that I don't like the way you posted that I am pushing you in a corner. You had your opinion and I had mine.That is not pushing you in a corner.

You said you haven't actually seen a booth, the way they work and fold, the way they look and what the material is made of etc etc which is why I am questioning your opinion on them.

I haven't got an Armani suit, and I know they're expensive, but I wouldn't make the assumtion that it's just a bit of material. Quality and craftsmanship may come into it somewhere along the line.
