Great Choons Tonight

I am SO looking forward to tonight's gig. It's actually a joint 40th party for husband & wife BUT the requests list looks like:

1. Half the night we want 80s; not the regular stuff - we want stuff people will remember but have not heard for donkeys. Examples given include King, Fairground Attraction, Simple Minds.

2. The other half the night they want "prep" for next week's IoW festival - so that's Kaiser Chiefs, NERD, KT Tunstall, Hoosiers, Wombats, Ian Brown, Iggy & The Stooges, Zutons, Kate Nash, Cribs, One Night Only, Kooks, James, Starsailor, Scouting for Girls, Delays and the headliners - Police and the Sex Pistols!!

Vectis: If they're great toons.....I've got to seriously re-think whether or not DJing is for me. I'd pass by a gig like that (as to me, the music is completely foreign to a dance floor) and I gotta say, I'm really surprised so many DJs on this forum are so into rock and alternative music forms.

From my own experience of dealing with Island musicians and promoting gigs on the island, there most definitely is 'something in the water' on the Isle of Wight. It's such a small parochial sort of a place, full of refugees from modern living, doing their own thing. For as long as I can remember, Islanders have always had a rather 'quirky' taste in music.

Maybe it all stems from the original Isle of Wight festivals and all those Hippies (many of whom possibly never left)? Aah, the Isle of Wight festivals...I have some vivid memories of two of them.

Most of the gigs I play for islanders are quirky in one way or another, it's not very often I get a "normal" gig for locals. "Normal" gigs are for Overners :p

I listen to a LOT of music, mostly what you'd classify as 'Indie', in my downtime but if I had to name my top 10 personal favourite artists/bands I'd probably not put any of this genre in there with the exception of Bjork. Yet I can probably keep the dancefloor humming for a couple of hours with this type of stuff no problem IF that's what the punters want.

I like gigs where I have to really think hard about the music rather than going onto autopilot; tonight my brain's gonna hurt :)

I don't think they're that unusual.. its quite common to get an indie/alternative crowd that, often at weddings. You'll find out once you get a few more mobile gigs under your belt.

I too have a wedding tonight and like 'spirits high' they also said, you're the dj, do your thing. Apart from the first dance they want UB40 - can't help (falling in love with you).

Should be a good night but I've heard from Twinspin that this venue are a bit funny on sound levels. I don't think they have a limiter tho.

Looking forward to it, it'll be my first outing of my LED PAR's and ImpossibLED (if it comes in time :mad: - that's another story!!!)

Usually I play maybe 5 tracks of the ilk, before I start getting a little unnerved. I could most likely do the gig too, BUT I'd choose not to. Put it down to business ethics, professionalism, can't be bothered....whatever.

Why turn down a gig on the basis of the type of music played....I quite like getting asked to play genre's I'm not familiar with, it forces me to get researching, learn about styles that are new to me. Not only does it make us more adaptable, I've actually found a few artists that I like away from Disco's

There's certainly enough tracks by the artists listed to keep it fairly dancefloor friendly.

Maybe I'm just not that money concious and think it's more professional to not take on work I'm not too familiar/happy with. I'd rather stick to what I know and be the best I can be at that, rather than try new music genres and be less than stellar/convincing. Honestly, If I did a gig with nothing but alternate/indie music I'd be all night wondering what I was doing there and waiting for the clock to get to the end time.

Thats fair enough, each to there own of course. Its certainly important to enjoy your work, fortunately I tend to find something to like in most styles...The only area I think i'd struggle is happy hardcore..its like sped up fairground music, and makes little sense to me. Having said that, if a gig came up, I'd do my best to figure out what's credible and popular.

I play alot of the new r'n b stuff like soulja boy etc (blah blah) and apart from needing to tie down my speakers (yet another thread) its not too bad in small doses.
I DJ a campground pavilion for all of the national Holidays (5 of them) and you would be surprised at what 5min old rap and r n' b tunes I'm asked for by the under 10s there!.:confused: :confused:
But bear in mind that they are from all over the country especially the big cities. anyway..forgot what I was saying:beer1: :beer1: :beer1:

I've played this at my last three gigs (all to 18 year olds) as it was recommended by one of my sixth formers, and it has gone down a storm every time, even though it barely scraped into the top 40. I gather it is from a movie that is popular with the young 'uns - Step Up 2: the Streets

Yep. Last song finished dead on 1am, 20 minutes to get out of the venue (probably the easiest access venue on the island) then 10 minutes drive home. Feed the cat, grab a beer, check email, 01:44!

You are right to pass on gigs if you cant or wont play the music that the punters want.
On the subject of the IOW dont forget their most successful musical export has been Level 42 and I bet you played plenty of their tunes over the years Steve.
