Naff is older sounding slang, but I reckon it's become a standard accepted word in a way.

Yep, naff is OK for all, I think... when in doubt stick the prefix 'well-' before it and you'll be (dare I say it?) sorted, i.e. 'well-wicked', 'well-chuffed', oh, and of course you must 'ave a 'well-'ard dog' ;)

I've just checked, and the correct word to use is toilet.

Examples:

"Tonight's disco was toilet. Nobody danced all night."

"My new toilet is toilet...it has a scratch on it"

The word NAFF on a family forum....gadzooks!

I'd be prepared to bet that derivation is about as well-researched as the Port Out/Starboard Home source for 'posh', and For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, i.e. not very, and in fact, wrong.

In this case I'm prepared to believe it is a true meaning, although some of the slang listed was pretty much so so and not as interesting as one might have imagined. However,I'm sure it will be of interest to some readers.

The site was the first one I came to which had a reference to it and I thought it better to link to a site, rather than just write what I already understood to be true.

Perhaps the Gays haven't lobbied the OED yet for Polari speak to be included?

I did have prior knowledge of the above meanings too (who wouldn't) and was merely pointing out a derivation that most people might not know. A derivation that was pointed out to me by a Polari speaking Gay person some time ago.

I had read the thread but not the link and although all the words mentioned are familiar I have still never come accross this term Polari before.
I do remember there being a huge outcry some time ago when Princess Ann told a reporter to "naff off".
