Uploading music to the Cortex 1000

Hi Folks

I have just purchased the Cortex HDC-1000 and am totally baffled. Can anyone tel me how to load music into the Cortex database? I have downloaded the database from Cortex website but it doesnt recognise any cd's from my laptop drive.
I guess I've been spoilt whilst using OTS AV as its all in one, but if anyone can help I would appreciate it.

As a seasoned Cortex user ( believe that, and you can knit fog:D :D :D ) may I recommend you download this program,

and use it to rip your CD's. Then all you do with the Cortex software is create a database on the HD. Any problems, just ask Crazy K ;) :D :D :D

The cardinal rule is to get the tags right before ripping to your HD, as it's easier to edit before than after. :D I wish I had taken note of this gem of advice before I attempted to rip my entire music collection at a furious pace. :( :( :( One lives and learns. :D

Do a test run with a memory stick.

Put say 6 tracks on the stick (properly tagged)

Start Cortex insert memory stick

Cortex will say no database do you want to creat one.

Click yes and it will create a .db file on the stick.

You should now be able to easily find and play those tracks using your keyboard search.

As Peter says, be careful with tagging---dont use apostrophe, dashes or similar.

Ah yes, if possible use a drive with FAT32 formatting. This allows the Cortex to write to it.

HD should be high RPM ( 7200, Big cache helps apparently) Get a powered hub, and a keyboard. You won't believe how much the keyboard improves things.Good luck.

PS, out of interest, why not the D2? You semed to be tending that way last we saw. :confused:

I did order one via Phase One but Mike told me it was an old link and that the D2 was no longer available. So I decided to go back with my original plan and by the Cortex. Looking forward to using it. The good thing with being an OTS user is that I can convert all my music back to MP3's

Before Rob dives in, I'd suggest that D2's are still available, and often at keen prices, while stocks last. ;) :D

Tagging as I understand it, ( which to be honest isn't much :( ) is putting a label on the MP3 so the HD Controller knows where it is. You can alter them in Media Monkey to suit your style, or correct mistakes , and heaven knows, I've got a couple to alter. ;) :( :( :( Good luck, and let us know how you get on, or if you need help.

It's no damme d good knowing WHAT it is, if it doesn't know WHERE it is!
( Joking apart, it's two sides of the same coin, I reckon )

Don't ask ME...when I was testing it, I only plugged in one drive (ipod).

My brother's had it for the last 5 weeks to assist in building my new console, so I can't even test it to find out at the moment!

On the grounds that I was unaware that the D2 came WITH keyboard when I made my choice, I'll let you off that one. :D I'd suggest letting Vectis anwer

As the D2 has 3 USB sockets, and as the keyboard obviously uses one, the process of elimination would suggest that you can use two hard drives with it, or possibly more if you add a hub.

Don't quote me on it though!

Sadly, I'd have to acknowledge the logic of that answer Rob. I'm guessing the answer's four, like the Cortex probably. The HDC3000 has more sockets built in also, but from a couple of posts on here the Numark is recommended more highly than it, and is cheaper.
