View Full Version : Hanging mirror balls

Hi had an initial meeting with clients today here:

I am supplying a four light led uplight system on the wooden pillars. I recon a glitter ball would make the venue as it is very light. I was thinking of attaching a steel wire across the top if the dance floor connected to the wood beams and having it on that with two pin spots.

It will look great being over the dance floor rather than on a t bar.
I could do two/three glitter balls.

Firstly is this a good idea? it will be very strong and will not break.

Also does any one know where to get steel wire and tensioning devices etc?.

Any other suggestions helpful. im doing the normal with two moving heads etc. :)

You could try Screwfix for wire tensioning devices, but by the sounds of it you are going to be fixing the wire to the wooden uprights.
I presume this is going to be a temporary set up? If I was the owner of the hall I would want someone drilling and fixing things to walls.
If you want to use a small light mirror ball, why not make a bracket the goes over the beam that crosses the room?

I wouldn't go near hanging stuff like that unless you really do know how and have the relevant quals.

Otherwise things may go bump in the night..
.. and then it would go "nee naw nee naw".. then "beep beep beep".. then "beeeeep" as the person dies.

I have to agree with Sam on this one. I would definately NOT hang anything above a dancefloor unless it is professionally rigged i.e. purpose built rigging.

Just not worth taking the chance and I very much doubt PLI would cover it if anything 'fell off'. :eek:

Its about 15 metres high, so will need a big ladder. not perminant. There are beams that go horizontal, i was thinking of attaching the wire too them?

I think we've already sussed that one Sam. :)

Don't forget Toby, wherever you set up the mirrorball, you will get the patterns all round the room anyway. (within reason)

Well. He didn't sound convinced :p

And yes. We had the mirror ball on the rig in a corner of the Marquee. And with 250w Discharge lamps on it.. the effect looked awesome all the way around the room.:o

Thanks I know where is will put it :) (out of the way on a tbar) What's the best size for mobile? I was looking at 40cm? it will be the only thing on the tbar. Now i have a trailor i could go bigger :)

Mine are 30cm I think - I can't see there being a massive difference between a 30 and 40 in terms of light output.

I personally find that 30 does the job perfectly for a mobile.
Anything bigger is a bit too large imo.

Just an idea but what about a blow up one??? I have not seen or used one before so I can't comment on the effect given off.


Maby if the light given off was ok then maby buy a large blow up mirror ball and hang that up in the air???

Do they exist?

How would the mirror tiles stay on if you kept blowing it up and letting it down?

I would of thought it would be somthing like tin foil but made out of plastice or somthing???

They don't reflect light.
The blow up ones are used for a visual effect.. in that it will be lit up and change colours.

You wont get the beams coming off it.

Another one I saw was a "Mirrorball".. but if you look closely it had lots of LEDs built into it... I think it was used by Take That recently.
