I understand why they are there, but to heckle a new member into introducing themselves is surely less friendly and polite than the new member not introducing themselves in the relevant section?

It's also not the 'norm' for new forum members to introduce themselves on forums across the internet, so I don't see it as rude or inpolite when people don't do it.

The other thing that annoys me is the constant 'reverting to type' from some members, as a result of their awareness that the forums are viewable to the public. You don't have to sign up as a company, you could log in as yourself, and even put a disclaimer in your signature to differentiate your views from the views of your company (such as Steve does).

A lot of forums I go on.. including the one I run myself.. encourages people to introduce themselves.
It can help members come up with a decent and useful reply constructed to the members situation.. and it also makes members feel more inclined to help them out etc if they know a bit about them

We give gentle prompts now and again to steer people back on topic but personally it's not something I strongly push for.

It's all about treading a fine line. We try remind people of the rules but at the same time we don't want to come across heavy handed. Saying that though, I sometimes get annoyed when things stray off-topic so fast, especially if it's a topic I've started. :d

No-one has said you did. However, there have been people that have used dyslexia as an excuse for lazy and sloppy posting. This I find insulting to those that truly do suffer from it. In my experience those that do have dyslexia usually make more of an effort with their posts than most. :)

I used to be mild dyslexic but I have (apparently) got rid of it?!?!

My grammar is actually very poor. I always find myself second guessing my punctuation and spelling...which I suppose is a good thing as I realise I have lots of room for improvement. I wouldn't mind taking a night class at college to improve actually, it's on my 'to do list'. It became apparent just how bad I really was when I asked Marc J to proof read some advertising literature of mine. I was shocked at how many mistakes he found. I now find myself picking over my letters and emails to clients with a fine tooth comb before hitting send or sticking on the stamp.

i dont think the moderators need to be more proactive here,it should be the members themself that should be more proactive in this area, you do not want to lose the fun of the forum they become stale and boring places then so keep the banter up,but some threads are on serious subjects which really shouldn't be hijacked(when someone ask's a technical question they should not have to go through 5 or 6 pages of drivel before getting to the answer they require) , senior members can/should help keep these on track with promts,don't leave it all to the moderators who from what i see on here are doing a good job.it is definately not over or under moderated imo and getting the right balance there is virtually impossible.

Sign up because I want to post something.. and then.. normally because it isn't a very good forum.. never go back again or I just forget my login details.

On the other hand, I do think it can discourage people from reading through some of the threads. There's nothing wrong with a bit of banter here and there, I enjoy it as much as anyone. A lot of it simply isn't even funny though, if we're being honest; kind of like the same joke being painstakingly stretched out and recycled over hundreds of posts. Some of the sharper, wittier comments are genuinely funny though, I have to admit to actually laughing out loud at a lot of Dave's posts :D

I have to say, one thing that does annoy me slightly (although not a lot, as you can just avoid them) are the 'compulsory' new member threads. I understand why they are there, but to heckle a new member into introducing themselves is surely less friendly and polite than the new member not introducing themselves in the relevant section?


I've also seen a lot of first posts greeted with a robot-like reply of something like "hello, please introduce yourself in the newbies section", completely ignoring the content of their first post! I find that to be a bit rude and lazy.

I find a couple of memebers have sharp tongues, referring to people as 'stupid' or 'planks'. There must be other words in the dictionery that could be used which are knowhere near as offensive.

Some members seem to stick together too and appear to bully others. Before you start im not talking about me. I have noticed a few members, whom, no matter what they post end up being cross examined and slammed. Just my opinion.

Another aspect that I like least about this forum....and that's antagonists that sign up with the sole intention of causing disruption. We've seen members like that come and go, and we suffer them for a little while but ultimately they are removed for the overall benefit of the forum. These members aren't strangers to causing disruption, and most have a track record of being banned before from posting on online forums.

We are watching though...closely.

The only thing I don't like about the forum is the forum software itself, but that is just personal choice as I have always preferred forums powered by IP Board and phpBB.

I find the wider layout easier to read than the "narrow" look of this one. I even preferred the temp board that was set up during the server move because you could adjust it to full screen width.

And although this is true, we don't have to prove anything to anyone.

This forum is owned by me and 2 other people. If I wanted to delete accounts, I could immediately, and without redress. If I wanted to ban people I could immediately, but I don't because we are as fair as we can be and give people the benefit of the doubt.

However, if people insist on spoiling the site for others, who may leave because of it, then we have to look at the situation again.

Banning people is not done lightly, but will be used if people keep antagonising others.

Yes I can, I'm a mod - where do you think complaints go to? - and as you say, you haven't read every post - I have, its part of my job description. NOBODY on here sets out to be confrontational - but we will defend the smooth running of the forum to the hilt! We have a responsibility to make sure its an enjoyable place to visit, for everyone, not just a wind up platform for Johnny come latelys!

As said earlier there is alot of "crap" posted on her but i think its good as it makes the places friendlier and eaiser/funner to read. I for one get bored reading long serious posts. you have to have a laugh here and there to lighten the mood or we would all become sour faces, O.A.P DJ's if it was removed.

Also i think its good getting people to say hi in the newbie thread. Its just being polite getting to know people before bursting in with a bucket full of questions. i think it also helps them fit in better and gives us a better idea of what they do.

The biggest problem I have with the forum is that it's too good a forum and I spend so much time on here that wor lass usually takes the huff with me and storms off to bed and I don't get my goodnight kiss (or more!)

Also, at the moment, I am somehow unable to use the multi-quote function, smilies (by clicking on them) or any other formatting. These things just seemed to have suddenly stopped working for me. Any advice? I'm using Firefox as a browser.

Also, I can understand what is meant when (I think it was) Soundtracker said about sorting out spammers on the forum. Part of my webhosting package was free software and included e-Blah forum software. I tried messing about with it a while ago (some forum members found it when checking me out!) as I was hoping to set up a forum where my guys and our clients (past, current and potential) could all come together. I left it for the last couple of months and went back in the other day and had to remove about 50 spam posts on one the threads. Disgraceful stuff. At the time I wondered if this forum had the same problem. Now I know.

Whats wrong with the way i post? Ive never singled people out, called them planks or stupid. Or reminded them of their other posts to try and trip them up. Thus not getting the thread solved, just reminding people who the boss is.

Everyone's comments are welcome, but if you make stupid comments or comments that annoy or upset other members, then you will alienate yourself.

There are very few members that feel unwelcome and those that do are the troublemakers or the people that find it amusing to get a rise out of people.

This is a forum. If people are silly enough to admit to stupid things they have done on a publically viewable forum, what do you think others are going to say?

Ahhhhh, never mind, what a silly thing to do, come and give us a virtual hug. I don't think so. People will give you their views. If you don't want their views, then don't start threads, if you think that people are going to be unwelcoming and disagree with your stance.

Everyone is welcome to stay and there are not many people who find this forum unwelcoming and perhaps if you do, then it would be better to move on to somewhere else and it would be more peaceful for everyone concerned.

IF the above post by Soundtracker is correct, then why oh why don't the moderators send a PM to the offending person, instead of trying to publicly ridicule and vilify them? but then again.. once I am out of nappies I will be flying you on your holidays anyway.. so I doubt I will be that fussed about what you are doing in the DJ industry.

And I also know this is a small industry. (but thank you for pointing it out ... just in case I had not grapsed the idea).
If I thought it was a large industry in which i could be succesfull then I would be staying in it.... but right now the thought of a 35- 40k basic salary (then bumping up to 50 after about 6 months) and flying for a living is a lot more appealing.

And I don't have to "put up or shut up". This is a public forum (which a number of us are supporters of and thus put money into it) and we are all allowed our opinions, I'm afraid.
