If you had the ability go back in time & change one thing relating to your business, what would it be?
For me, It would simply be to leave my daytime job & go full time about 10 years earlier than I actually did (2004).
What about the rest of you?

I'd have registered sex.com, stocks.com, loans.com, casino.com, business.com, boots.co.uk, taste.co.uk, recycle.co.uk etc. etc.....
Then I wouldn't have to work at all :)
OK, you DJs can have your thread back :P

Loads of things...
Knowing what I know now, I could have been so much further ahead with my business.
I would have been Richard Bransons son....
Apparently he "doesn't know what he wants to do in life yet..." - I'm not suprised!!!
And.. well.. I don't have much time to turn back.. but I would have started with a DMX rig and not got 100w plug and plays.

I reckon, knowing what I know now, I could have saved a small fortune by buying things that I need rather than what I want (and usually selling it for a loss). I also wish I'd gone digital straight away and charged more from the onset.

If I may bend the rules slightly, I'm with Rob. Except I'd be going
self-employed in the day job, rather than the Disco. And I'd strangle at birth the Function Manager who decided that the best way to do something dynamic and decisive was to sack me as Resident DJ without actually telling me! To this day I'm still officially resibent DJ there, since I've never officially been sacked, I just don't get the work! :D

I wish that, I knew what I know now, when I was younger. Experience can only come with time though, so you can't really cite that for this thread.
I struggle to think of a single thing I could go back and change, but I don't think either way I'd ever have ended up running a mobile disco company - it just isn't for me.
And.. well.. I don't have much time to turn back.. but I would have started with a DMX rig and not got 100w plug and plays.See, I would go the opposite way, and say I've wasted too much time and money on DMX, when the people paying you for the bookings really don't care!
See, I wouyld go the opposite way, and say I've wasted too much time and money on DMX, when the people paying you for the bookings really don't care!
That is totally fair enough :)
However I have a big interest in lighting now.. so I hence why I would have liked to have started earlier =D
Also i think that people do care to a point.
If I didn't have my movers I would not have created the awesome effect with the new mirror ball that got so many comments at a recent wedding... but then again if I was just using plug and plays i'm sure they would not have thought any less.
If that makes sense.

I love your really strong views on things that arent that important rob.
But that's the whole point Rich...I don't think DMX lighting is important & you clearly don't, but I'm sure there will be a number of people here who think it's essential, and would be able to give some valid reasons why.
I see no problem with having a strong opinion on something that's not that important to me personally.
Do dynamos count as DMX?
I can't answer that, as I have no knowledge of them.
Do your clients know what a D2 is then?
I doubt it very much.

And most clients won't know what a D2 is either.
Ahhh, but there are a couple of differences between me using DMX lighting & a D2, despite the fact that in both cases clients won't know what I'm using.
If I used DMX lighting, this would make things MORE complicated for me, as I'd have the controller and extra leads/cables to carry in & set up, which would obviously add to my set up time.
However, replacing my CDs & players with a D2 will make things LESS complicated, as I won't have two boxes of CDs to carry in, reducing my number of trips to carry in the gear from 10 to 9. Also, it will be easier to find & play tracks with the D2 than with CDs, as well as giving me the ability to find customers requests quicker than at present. Also, not having CDs means I won't need to arrange a table to put them on with the venue.
As I've said before, I'm keen to consider anything which makes my job easier, which is also why I'm seriously thinking of replacing my speakers with the SRM450V2 later this year.
I also want to find some kind of tripod bags, as this will reduce my number if trips to carry in the tripods from two to one.

Yes...most clients won't know what DMX OR a D2 is.
However, I don't just decide what equipment to use based solely on whether customers would notice, but ALSO on whether it makes my job easier or harder.
Maybe I didn't explain myself very well, and should have said "There's no point in me using DMX lighting as most customers won't even of heard of it, let alone expect me to have it...and apart from that, it would make things more complicated than the plug & play lighting I use at the moment, and I want to make things LESS complicated for myself, not MORE complicated."
I apologise for not making things clearer in my original post.

Everyone has different ways of highlighting things they consider important.
Some people use a large font, some use bold text, some use coloured text and some use underlining. I tend to use capitals mostly.
I also find it slightly ironic that I'm being criticized for highlighting some words with capitals...by someone who never uses capitals at all...even where they SHOULD be used!

I just don't agree with that Rob!
The client will not know about technical stuff in most cases.. so yes they wont know about DMX.
But that does not mean that they would not expect it.. because what they expect is the best possiable service (which includes music / lighting etc) that you can provide.
And I would say that DMX units do provide a much better (and often more varied) effect that plug and plays can. Therefore surely you could argue that in a way the client DOES expect you to have it.
Maybe I am just lucky with my clients.. but a lot of them often comments on my lighting... so I guess I am in a small minority of people who get guests who appreciate the overall package.. not just the music?
Edit to add:
I confused myself in that post.
But I think the overall point was that lighting *does* matter. Maybe not so as the music but it does matter - so the better you can make it.. the better imho.
I think some people are a bit silly in taking the view that the client doesn't give a dam about it :)

That doesn't make sense, Sam.
How can you say that clients won't know about DMX but that doesn't mean they would not expect it?
How can somebody expect something they haven't heard of, don't know what it is & know nothing about?

Of course lighting matters, and I've never suggested that the client doesn't give a dam about it.
However, all the client expects is that I DO have a lightshow. Very few ever want to know any more than that.
If clients were asking if I had DMX lighting, and decided not to go ahead with the booking when I told them no, then I'd obviously go ahead & get it.
In the real world, I've NEVER had a potential client ask whether I have DMX lighting, which shows how unimportant it is to them...and therefore to me as well!
Rob,
My point is that they may well not know what DMX is.. but they may still want a good looking light show (not just a case of having lights) which could therefore be in their mind a dmx lightshow.. but they don't know about dmx and thus wouldn't know what to ask for.. other than a good light show - but that doesn't mean they don't have views on what the light show should look like.

Sam,
You're not explaining yourself very well!
My basic show uses 8 pinspots on a pre-wired bar running through various different sequences, a mushroom light & a gobo flower.
The larger disco adds a couple of 250 watt mirror scanners.
It hasn't received a negative comment from anyone yet (whether from a client or guest), and well over 100,000 people have been to one of my discos, so I really don't think my lack of DMX lighting is a problem.

So what your saying is thats its impossible to have a great lightshow without DMX? if so then thats POPPYCUPS....I used to use strobes, moonflowers, scanners & lasers etc that were connected to a switch pack and switched on and off at various times etc, they certainly were not DMX and didn't cost as much.
I think Rob is spot on regarding DMX, its not a necessity, and if clients are lightshow driven and are looking for a spetacular lightshow etc then sorry but they wont use a mobile DJ, they will use one of the companies that provides audio and visual services for X-Factor etc
It goes back to a common thought about the forum that if you dont have the best named gear such as denon, or DMX lighting, Versace suits or a BMW then your not a professional.....I have used many cheap branded, budget equiptment and put on a show which i am sure is just about as professional as i am sure a lot of others here but at a fraction of the cost and without the need to feel that i am outdoing others on here.

I'm also one of the folks that doesn't think lighting matters much to the average client....despite partly running a programmed DMX show. However, although the customers' aren't light-show driven, I would bet money that if they were shown a side-by-side comparison of DMX versus sound to light the vast majority would show a preference for the DMX as it looks more of a "show" and less of the random tendencies sound to light can have.
I still don't think a DMX show is a requirement or necessary, but it's something extra that can be offered as part of your overall service. It all ties in nicely with Daz's 'Everything Matters' & 'people notice' threads.. the clients may not know they're looking at DMX programming but the majority of them will most likely enjoy the show that they're viewing.
DMX essential?...no way.
DMX nice as something else your offer as part of your show?....why not.

When I say I'm using the D2 for my own sake, it's to make working easier & to reduce the amount of stuff I need (no more boxes of CDs).
Doesn't DMX have the opposite effect (controllers which need programming, extra cables to run between lights etc)?

Well, no, not really.
You have spent a long time ripping CDs and people would spend less time programming DMX so it is ready to go when you work..
If you were using 4 lights DMX'd, then you'd need 3 cables and one from the controller.

I think that both Sam and Rob have a point but overall Rob is making more sense!!
The average punters walks into a pub, after having a few drinks all she wants to do is chat and have a dance with her friends. Whether mushroom effects or moving heads are being used that person will still have a great night. She will not wake up the next morning and go "ohh last was great, I mean did you see those moving heads!!!! Not forgetting the barrel effects!!!"
Doesn’t happen, wont effect your show or performance in anyway...
BUT DMX is helpful when as you have control over your lightshow. What if the client wants the room to be pink or have a white spotlight on her when cutting the wedding cake? Without DMX you can be sometimes limited with what you can/can't do......
But overall, nobody could care less.....It's all about the music!!!!!!

You could do a disco without mega watts of sound pumping out,
You could do a disco dressed in whatever manner,
You could do a disco in a rubbish venue,
You could do a disco without PLI or PAT,
You could do a disco without lights,
You could do a disco to an audience that doesn't speak English,
and people would still dance,
However, without music, you'd have nothing..zilch..zip..nada.
So I'd have to say, music is far and away the most important factor, is it not?
As for DMX. It's desirable but not absolutely necessary...yet.

I have already agreed that in my last post.
The situation is this though.
You will never get a gig where the only thing you have is music so it's only hyperthetical.
It all adds up.
I keep referring back to it, but everything matters and it would be very rare that you had a gig where it was only the music that counted.

DMX is not about the cost - you can get some very cheap DMX effects.
So that is complete tosh.
However, although the customers' aren't light-show driven, I would bet money that if they were shown a side-by-side comparison of DMX versus sound to light the vast majority would show a preference for the DMX as it looks more of a "show" and less of the random tendencies sound to light can have.
Exactly.
And it is not a requirment.. but it can certainly make things look better - so why not?
The client does not understand the technicial side of it.. but I bet they will appreciate the light show.. otherwise Jamie wouldn't bother with his movers.. and nor would i
Doesn't DMX have the opposite effect (controllers which need programming, extra cables to run between lights etc)?
No it doesn't.
In the grand scheme of things it is pretty easy. You just have to know how. Which is a learning curve.. a bit like mixing.
Yes and no.
But I have had emails after events where they compliment the disco and actually mention how great the lighting was and how they loved the "beam" effects. (i.e the movers)
Also I have had people come into the room and say "oh wow.. look at that" when looking at the rig. (and yes.. that is true..).
Also the kids love the spots produced by movers / scanners,
At weddings etc they always seem to want to chase the spots on the floor around.. so to whack them into manual mode can be extremely funny :D
No,
It is NOT all about the music.. although it plays a large part.
If you turn up to a disco with a couple of spot banks.. I wouldn't be happy.. as i'm sure msot people would not.
And lighting DOES effect the disco - although then you can have very crap DMX lighting too.. it is all about getting the right mix of effects to create the right atmosphere.
No, but they may think nasty glaring lights, annoying the hell out of me, shining in my eyes every few seconds..... which could be prevented and controlled with a nice bit of DMXing! - and thank you for sharing your experience of Pubs with us!
Totally agree!
DMX also can add a nice variation.
My shows can go from mad scanning with the movers to a nice relaxed mirror ball.. a huge amount of variety.. and it provides an INTERESTING VISUAL EFFECt.. because don't forget it isn't just a case of lighting the dance floor. The people who will be sitting down may well be looking up to the disco.. so to have something visual for them to look at (such as strong beams / mirror ball / par cans) all helps to enhance the experience.
It is not all about the music - there are other factors involved too.
Exactly.
It is, but it's not all about the music, as I have already said. Lots of factors combine to create atmosphere.

I was wondering if someone would eventually notice!
I wouldn't mind so much if it wasn't my own thread!
Shaun must be slacking a bit today!
Not slacking, we just don't enforce "off topic" posts to heavy handedly. Saying that though, if the original poster of any topic feels like it's getting out of hand in their thread, please inform a moderator and they'll give it a gentle prod back in the right direction.

I don't charge any extra.

Nothing (as I don't have any) and no!

I appreciate that, Shaun.
It happened well into the thread, so I didn't see it as a problem.
Obviously, if I HAD, then I would have said something.
:)

Nothing.
Because I pride myself on offering the best service that I can for the price.
And DMX and the extras that it brings are included in that.
Yes I could do a disco with just my sound to lights.. (as I did for quite a while, don't forget..
But I AM getting many more comments about how good everything is NOW than before. And how good the lighting looks NOW than I ever did before.
So obviously people do notice.
But everyone does things differently.
Thankfully I am doing something right and thus get booked up.

I don't understand, if you're running a business, and you're investing a few £100 extra on DMX - surely you incorporate that into your prices? And as most of us have already agreed, DMX lighting is not something your average person on the dancefloor is concerned about, so it really is a low priority.
I link my lighting together with a DMX lead, but I have relatively little control over it all, other than turning it off and on, and I get a good looking light show. If I were to start throwing money at DMX controllers and moving heads, I would have to charge more, and given the choice, I don't think most people would want the extra lighting.

So you do use DMX then..
If you link them together via DMX then they are co-ordinated by DMX.. and you don't need a controller to have "dmx"
And well.. having said I don't charge extra for DMX.. my prices are a lot higher now than when I started.
Which is partly due to have a much better rig.. so I suppose I have increased them due:rolleyes:
Although that is directly because the demand for my services has gone up a lot... but that is probs stimulated by many factors.. including having an impressive set up.

In actual fact, a lot of units when linked together don't follow the DMX protocol, and therefore they're not compatible with other DMX lighting units.

Just thought of another. I would not have let my Equity membership lapse.
