I am more dreaming.. for a few years later after the pay has gone up by 5k a year :cool: (it does with BA anyway)

It will be something more realistic for the first few years.. and then once I can afford it.. something more sporty :rolleyes:

Although the z3 is is insurance cat 14 apparently.

Maybe that is slightly more realistic.

I dunno, I had a group 20 car when I was 22, and still managed to insure it fully comp with zero NCD. Only for a year mind you, then I realised how stupid I was being and how much money I was throwing away (and for another reason - see Lewnics' speeding thread!).

That was before the insurance groups were re-shuffled to what they are now (although I just looked it up on Daz's link and it's still a group 16) - and insurance was probably a lot cheaper then than it is today, although I was also earning a lot less (nowhere near £50k).

If I was earning £50k I wouldn't bat an eyelid paying what I was paying back then. Given that I've now got full NCD I would even consider getting a car in the same insurance group again - if my wife were to allow me :eek:

If you can get over the badge snobbery the Fiat Barchetta is a much better drive than the Z4 and about a third of the price for a low miles 2004/05 model (the year they stopped making them).

I drove the lot when I decided I was getting a 2-seat roadster and once I'd had a go in the 'B' I couldn't possibly justify the extra for any of the other marques. I've run mine now since almost new for 4 years and apart from the servicing costs I've had virtually no problems with it at all.

Insurance is group 18 though :eek: But my combination of location, age, NCD, usage means it only costs about £250 to insure.

I will have to see what is what when i get to the stage.

However I did just look up the z3 and it would be about £1000 if I was 21 and if it was the 1.9 variant apparently. So obviously these sort of cars are do-able... but you just have to go with the "lesser" versions first.

One of my mate ordered his about 6 months ago, he got the top of the range spec for £58,000. for a car that does 0-60 in 3.6 seconds and can get round the Nürburgring in 7min29sec thats not a bad price.

If I bought one in my early years it would be second hand as would also need money for housing and saving etc.
At the moment the z4s seem to be around the 13k+ for a decent mileage.
The z3s around 7k+ for say something with about 50,ooo miles.

Insurance for a z3.. if I were 21 seems to be around 800 - 1000 a year if I got the 1.9 version.

It is do-able.. but it will be a case of seeing when I get there and who I fly for.
If I start with someone like BA I would certainly be able to afford it.


And don't forget, the last 16k of that 50k is taxed at 40%...

I hopefully there should be room for both :rolleyes: but a lot depends on what job it is and what the markets arre doing.
One good thing about flying is that expenses are often reduced in this country because you spend quite a lot of time away.. for which airlines like BA pay you with 10 - 15k of allowances to cover the food / travel to/from work etc etc.

The SLK was my brothers second car. Not a huge fan of the older model. A bit "square" ish IMO.

I'd say that's definitely do-able....surprisingly cheap to be honest. My example I gave earlier was costing me £250 per.....MONTH, just for insurance :eek:

Being honest and its only my opionion, why not buy a sensible car that gets you from A to Z, doesn't cost an arm and a leg to buy or run (although fuel will prob cost £10 per gallon by next week) and put the rest of the cash that you dont spend away, what happens if the unthinkable happens and you cant do that job again (ie go blind, lose part of your body etc) I know that I am being quite extreme but you never know what is round the corner. Not that i think you wouldn't cope and get on with life etc like Dave (Dragonfly) who is certainly an inspiration to all.

Flying has many things that could take ruin our careers in an instant!
So if I couldn't accept that risk I could just end up living in a hovel for the rest of my life .. thinking "what if".
Also we do all have to ahve life insurance, loss of medical insurance, loss of license insurance etc etc.

So sorry.. I don't agree.:o
If I am earning a large amount of money from flying.. I don't think I would want to be driving a fiesta "just in case"

However I am not stupid and I would save money. Not only because I would want to buy a nice house at some point!

And remember.. the 50k salary with RyanAir is only the 6 month salary - it does increase.

And well.. firstly I have been talking about the z3 which would be a 1.9 as my "start" car once flying. This is all very much dreaming and might not happen if i end up starting on turboprops :D

But I do love nice cars. And this has probs stemmed from my brother having his Ferrari. So I don't think i wouldnt get one just because it is a status symbol.
In fact I dont really care about the engine size.. I like something that looks good and I like a lot :)

And of course.. the smaller the engine. the cheaper the insurance

They dont look good (in my eyes), but they perform and will not break down. insurance will be lower too. for a non turbo 1.3 engine it has 200 BHP, which is very good. they also have four seats and doors so you can throw all your pilot mates in it and off too the pub you go:

No.. i have said from the beginning.. this would be AFTER I get my job.
NOT during training. This will be about a year in or so when I can afford it.

I will be driving a heap of junk during training :)

And yes.. in my eyes it would be a status symbol to an extent... but also just the fact I would like a nice car at some point.

So to say again.. this is once i am into my actually career as a pilot. Not during training. there is no way I could afford a car like this now. And it would be from my hard earned money in my job.

Just out of intrest why are you thinking about it now. I know it's good to plan ahead but what happens if you do crash your car in the first three years of driving, you wont get the ncb you are after. A lot can happen in three years.

I wasn't having a pop at you. Sorry. I like to plan ahead myself but not that far ahead. :)

As to the car, yes and no. Last year I used to spend my money as soon as I got it. Since then I have learned to save, this is why I can afford a new car, paid for rach's engagement ring, some new dj gear and some other stuff.
