The loneliness of the long distance Ripper

CD’s to the left of him, CD’s to the right of him, CD’s in front of him. Surrounded by bit and byte, into the trays of the PC’s he fed the Silver Discs, six hundred here, six hundred there, till only a handful would remain. .
His is not to reason why, his is but to rip or die.

It’s day seventy five in the Excalibur household, and Peter has been ripping for seventy three days straight. The other housemates are anywhere they can get away from him, they just bring him food and drink when they have to. He has started holding conversations with the Pink Elephant about how things were better in the old days, when backup meant having a shilling in your pocket to stop that cracked 45 jumping, and punters knew you had to have a rest mid gig to let the amp cool down.. ( heatsinks you could fry an egg on, no fans or clip LEDS in those days) , and beer was £1 a gallon. ( Yes kids, it was once) and nobody minded if you left the gig splattered on Websters Green Label and still drove home. He has started muttering about how good cassettes are, and how they’ll take over from records. “THIS IS BIG BROTHER SPEAKING, WOULD EXCALIBUR PLEASE GO TO THE DIARY ROOM WHERE SOME NICE MEN IN WHITE COATS WOULD LIKE A CHAT WITH HIM”

Sod me this is strong...

Not a bad taste, slightly too sweet for me and a bit too fizzy, but a good flavour and interesting colour. The wife liked it too.

When I ripped the bulk part of my collection, I didn't find it a chore at all! Apart from listening through all the pop tracks for errors, but there were next to none as it turned out. If you leave them on to play in the background whilst doing something else, you're not really paying attention to them, but you will notice an error straight away :)

Beerfunk, I know I'm dim, but can you " Listen while you rip ?" I've just checked afterwards, as I did my " pretend discos" in my headphones. Two nights ago when footy was on, I was playing requests for my wife, as she asked for tunes she liked, and thought may catch me out. The search is very fast, and pretty accurate.

Tony, last week I was sorry to hear that a powerful tornado had ripped through Lincolnshire, and done hundreds of thousands worth of improvements. :p :p :p ;) ;) ;)

Rob, when will you be fully digital? My first gig in the new 92.74% format will be on Friday week, in a local club which is ideal for using to test gear and setups. Hopefully I should cut loading times down, and have space to spare with all those CD boxes gone. :confused: :D :D :D

There was one software that I used years ago that allowed you to play the track you were ripping - it did slow the process down but was kinda handy as it played the MP3, post-rip, starting 10-15 seconds after the ripping process began - cute, but not actually terribly helpful.

It was a little obtuse, I admit, but it was a reference to that very quote, "Look upon my work, ye mighty, and despair", given that the inscription was on a mighty work that had fallen into ruin. Living Wreck, then? ;)

Loving Media Monkey (except my payment for the full version failed to process correctly for some reason) - I especially like being able to edit multiple entries with the same (incorrect) data all in one go, oh, and the create tags from files names function is brilliant!

Conditions were deteriorating. Captain Excalibur and his crew were reaching breaking point. They were now running on willpower, as half of the equipment had expired long ago. The goal seemed no nearer than it had weeks ago, supplies would not be sufficient unless someone made the ultimate sacrifice. Captain Excalibur spoke, his voice trembling with emotion- " I'm going outside now, I may be gone some time" . Too true thought Jeanette, There's an off licence not five minutes from here, but the one with the Leffe is twenty miles away! :D

Not so. As Excalibur says, the first track will start to play shortly after the ripping process starts. It does for me anyway.
