I suppose it's no different to recording the chart on a cassette player years ago, but this is positively encouraging theft and breaking copyright law!

Radio cassettes
I've already said that Rob. This is a DJ forum, so therefore the interest is in music and this device is positively encouraging people to get illegal copies of music.

I completely agree, although I'm not sure how much encouragement people need these days. Before I DJ-ed the school's May Ball recently I spent quite a lot of time talking to my A-Level group about the tunes they wanted, and made a list of ones I needed to buy. Out of the fifteen 18 year olds in the group, not one of them had bought music in any format for some time. I think they thought I was a bit of a sucker for buying all my music - one girl even offered to transfer the contants of her ipod onto my school laptop during the lesson!!!
If I am perfectly honest, I would find such a gadget quite useful as a research tool. As a teacher it is very difficult to listen to any radio during the school day so having a device that could do this would help keep me up-to-date with the latest big tunes, that I would then download legally.

Well, I've sent the company an email asking what their policy is on music copyright theft.
I shall await the answer with baited breath!

I think a lot of that is ignorance as the kids don't know and understand copyright or royalties. They just think they're getting something for free and don't want to know how or why.

We spent some time talking about this and about half of them are pretty savvy about the legal issues. One of them even writes his own music, and is pretty good at it too, but even he wouldn't agree with me. Their opinion was that everyone else is doing it so why shouldn't they?
I gave up debating with them in the end as it really was like :bang:

Well, I assume it's just the same as taping off the radio years ago, except this does it for you? You're still not going to get a clean track (start and end) most of the time, are you?
I suppose it is a bit worse than Sky+ and the like, but what I will say is that times are changing and people don't want TV or radio by schedule anymore.

Different issue - at least if you are recording one of your own compilations, you've alreadt bought the CDs to do it from.

And did you see cassette recorders being advertised like this:
"The Intempo Rebel is a breakthrough product that allows consumers to explore new music recorded from the radio, free of charge. The first of its type in the world, Rebel is a music sampling system which records the most-played tracks from any FM station then saves these tracks as MP3 files, cutting out hyperactive DJs and adverts as it goes. You can then effortlessly download these songs onto your iPod, MP3 or mobile phone, liberating your favourite tracks to your pocket without paying a penny. "

If it was any other type of recording device advertised normally, then I wouldn't have said anything, but that really does take the biscuit!

I know what you mean as it exists solely to record from the radio only. But hasn't there been software available for a long time now that rips streaming audio and video? Just as illigal of course.

Well, I have a reply. Take into consideration, before you read this, that there is no such thing in this country as a fair use policy.
"Thank you for your email. Please be assured that Intempo does not and would never condone music piracy or theft of any kind. Rebel is a modern version of recording the top 40 from the radio with a cassette player, Im sure you remember doing that. Rebel and indeed a number of products available including Roberts DAB radio and Pure DAB radio allows the digital taping of music from the radio. The broadcaster has already paid all fees associated with playing and broadcasting the music.
Rebel makes imperfect digital recordings from FM broadcasted radio stations, designed for personal use, and most definitely not for subsequent copying, re-distribution or sale. The recordings so made are not full, perfect copies of the original recording. The recording of broadcasted radio for home use has long been accepted as an example of ‘fair use’ in relation to the copyright of published and broadcasted music. By ‘fair use’ the broadcaster (whether that be BBC, or independent commercial stations) have already paid royalties to the copyright owner for the transmission of the work. By the imperfect recording of this work, Rebel does not deprive the copyright owner of royalty (paid by broadcaster) or of further income from sales (imperfect copy). Indeed, by the recording in this manner, it can be seen as a sample of the work and may encourage purchase of a perfect copy and/or the full album.
Intempo will be including facility to purchase full copies online in the future and in no way condones making additional copies, further distribution or sale of music recorded on Rebel.
I hope that I have been able to reassure you of our intent with Rebel, Intempo strives to deliver products at the cutting edge of technology and in partnership with broadcasters and record companies our roll outs this year will include features allowing users to tag and purchase their favorite music based on the imperfect recordings they have already made.
Please feel free to contact me by phone if you would like to discuss this matter further."

I think this would be a great idea if they just got rid of the USB part so you can not transfer the mp3's to other devises and just listen to it on this radio.
Its abit like you tube i feel. there was no way of downloading or copying videos but now there are many sites and software available to convert these videos so the original licensing is not really covered anymore.

Yes, but in reality how many MORE people will get illegal copies of music as a result of this device?
I'm just wondering how many people will fork out £70 for the privilege of getting illegal copies of songs - which as Beerfunk pointed out would often not be clean copies anyway.....
.....when they can get clean copies of any song they like from file sharing sites for absolutely nothing?
My personal view is that this device will be less successful than the Betamax video recorder.
