No space to park !! or perform !!

Although its part of the job i wander if anyone gets a little irritated about venues that leave no space near the door, to park and unload. This i find to be mainly in Hotels. I understand that they put their guests first but surely there should be some provision made for the purpose of unloading. I have often had to unload from the otherside of the carpark, from the road ! :bang:
Then not only has this been a frustrating experience but once in the venue they have laid out the room in such a way that only a ghetto blaster and one light bulb will fit into the space allocated for you. To top it all no one is available so you spend ages moving tables and chairs before you can even set up. GGGRR!!

A little bit of forward planning and communication with the venue beforehand could sort that
i have been caught out on the odd occasion when i hav'nt done my homework especially with new venues if it is an akward carry i just don't take as gear

sometimes prior planning doesnt help .... i once visited a venue during the day with a client very small but it was slap bang in the middle of a park (field) but I was assured the gates would be open as they were on the visit and i could pull up at the door.

On the night ..... pitch black , raining , gates locked , key holder gone home the only place i could park was a leisure centre at least 200 m away from the door over a 3ft barrier across a totally unlit wet park type field no path way.

strangely hardly anyone turned up to the poor girls party.

....with which I agree. I once did a gig at a hotel I used to be at regularly. Set up the goalpost rig whilst the room was been set by the staff. When I returned later they announced that there was also a band and I had to move. Ended up moving the entire rig approx 16 feet!!! Luckily my goalpost is made entirely of truss so I was able to slide it along the carpet, good job I had a roadie with me:eek:

Oh this had nothing to do with prior planning something i always do when ever possible.......... This was a regular weekly Hotel Gig where they insisted on packing the guests in . leaving no room to pull up in the carpark. And as this has happened at other Hotels (despite my forward planning ) i suggest it should be the hotels that might do a little forward planning and leave some space for the Dj to draw up to the function room. After all we are an important part of the evening. The impression i get is that some places are only interested in their guests....... who gives a hoot how difficult it is for the Dj to get in just as long as he starts on time.

I was at The Queens Hotel, Bournemouth on friday and they coned an area off with reserved parking for me, I didn't ask for it but they were so helpful.......big contrast to your experience!

Turned up at a gig many years ago and found out we were backing a band.
But the band had taken up all the space ! No one told them there was a disco too. All we managed to sqeeze in was the decks i na corner but no lights !

Usually because I am there an hour before people start arriving there is plenty of room in the car park and I can get my vehicle right up to the stage door.

I dont do many hotels these days, tends to be mostly social clubs. First floor gigs are no good for my back anyway, getting too old for long lifts.

10 years ago I did a dinner dance with a band (Chas & Dave, as it happens).

When I arrived, their gear had been set up on the stage, but nobody had thought about leaving room anywhere for the disco.

I ended up moving some of the tables a bit & squashing myself into a corner.

Hi........ rather not say. However the Queens Hotel has always been great for getting in to.
