I'm pretty sure that Dragonfly tried FX with Vista and it wouldn't work properly.

I've had all sorts of problems trying to get any PCDJ progs to work on Vista, I downloaded the demo of FX VRM and this didn't work, kept freezing!! I haven't checked for a couple of months but Visiosonic definately seemed to be lagging behind regarding Vista patches and updates etc.

I'm pretty sure the programmes won't be supported in Vista as they have a number of new products now.

I had heard about problems with vista when I purchased my current laptop 1 year ago and searched to get one with xp. Reading the above replies I will proberbly wait a while and carry on using cd as my back up until visiosonic sort out issues or save some pennies for PCDJVJ.
Thanks for the replies.

AsI said, I'm pretty sure it's not supported now.

Have a look at some of their other newer supported products, VJ, Dex or Reflex.

That isn't the issue or wasn't the question. There are lots of DJ software titles that run fine on Vista. PCDJVJ and Virtual DJ being two that I use.

In which case buy a new laptop which at least matches the spec. of your current machine and a copy of Ghost (or similar) and clone the first one.

If it's a backup, it should be identical and therefore predictable.

Thanks everyone for the input, I have downloaded the trial of VJ today and had a play about with it and it covers my needs, so I think I will purchase it to install on the new laptop when I buy it.

Hya mate if using vista you may well have a few head banging sessions, even with the vista service pck1 its still way too unpredictable, its not if it will let you down but when and how often.
Just too many bugs in it at the moment, its far worse than Windows ME edition ever was and that was pretty bad.

Hi Karl I would prefer xp but can't seem to find any new laptops with it installed.I was going to install xp on the new laptop but I was told it would invalidate warrenty.

If you contact PCDJ, they will tell you that VJ works slightly better on Vista than it does on XP.

It works fine on both for me.

Why the Vista bashing if you haven't used this particular software on it?

Hi Karl I would prefer xp but can't seem to find any new laptops with it installed.I was going to install xp on the new laptop but I was told it would invalidate warrenty.

The Microsoft EULA (licence agreement) allows anyone who's purchased a copy of Vista "downgrade rights" to a previous comparable windows version.

This changes on 30th June though, when you're supposed to pay an additional fee to activate the downgrade rights (yeah, right! )

Any laptop already purchased with Vista falls into the former category. Don't know where you got the "invalidates the warranty" advice from but that's utter tosh, unless your "warranty" is actually a service contract which includes operating system support.

I've used Vista for the last 6 months and had no issues at all, no head-banging (apart from along with a bit of bit of Iron Maiden & AC/DC :D )

I really don't see why lots of people are so anti-vista. All my old XP software works on it and apart from it being slightly over-security concious I don't see a problem.

The only thing I would say, is if you are buying it for a main playout system, check with the software packages first for compatibility. Vista has been around long enough now for most software writers to have ensured their software works on it though.

Hi vectis It was PC world who said in would invalidate warranty, I think it is just the standard manufacture warranty.

works with windows 2000 very well.

My work has just donated to me a reasonable spec laptop with windows 2000 loaded and with the licence!. :D

Had it running on test now for 3 hrs and hasn't fell over once.

Shame I can't control my old KCD500. :(

Hya Daz if VJ works well with vista then that's great, my daytime job is as a PC technician/web designer so have seen many of the vista issues.
Granted some software does work ok with vista but allot don't although it IS getting better and more software producers are working hard to resolve compatibility issues as are Microsoft but on the whole its still very unpredictable.

Microsoft had bad problems with ME prior to XP being launched with compatibility issues which lead to a public apology by Bill Gates himself.

But as mentioned if VJ works well then that's a great step in the right direction, and my air of caution at the moment is purely at the current state of Vista itself and not how one particular software runs but the whole package.

Fair enough, but then we were talking about particular DJ software working on Vista.

Then they are talking :BS:

That's like a washing machine manufacturer saying you HAVE to use Persil, but if you switch to using Daz your warranty is void :bang:

Vista works very well for me, If you are wanting a Windows XP based machine then why not give Dell a try as you can choose what operating system that you want on it yourself.

My new Dj'in laptop is running vista with Freestyler DMX and Numark Cue, Have only had Cue crash once on me but that was before i installed the update.
I would advise you get the new laptop and then try a couple of products on it with Vista if that is your final choice and see what runs the best on your machine.

I'm fully aware of the title of the thread Daz, although it should really be a case of if vista is reliable enough to be used under situations like with DJ equipment which my honest opinion is NO as at present its just too unpredictable.
I don't see I have pointed anything out wrongly here, but purely pointed out the potential issues currently with vista.
One of the issues with vista at the moment is not being compatible with loads of other basic software's and issues within its own structure i.e. bugs so its quite possible it could freeze up etc. etc. etc. although maybe not related to the software in question but for other reasons related to vista its self.

All am saying is, is it really worth the risk at gigs when there is a far better alternative?
I actually have a laptop here that has vista installed, although I don't like I have to so I can keep up with the latest software so am able to resolve clients issues.

On a slightly different note answering another question on this thread, changing from vista to xp will not void the warranty, taking apart and messing inside will.

How can you know that it is unpredictable with DJ software when you don't use it?

I understand you work 'in the industry', but do you sit and betatest DJ software on Vista all day?

PCDJ recommend Vista rather than XP for VJ so that must tell you something?

Daz regardless of how good the dj software runes, Vista has issues with its self.
All I'm saying is that Vista in its current state is unstable so may lead to problems.
Its better to be safe than sorry I always say :)
