Could be wrong but they look home made.

They are called light screens. Not many professional DJ's use them these days as they are very dated (70's-80's). Probably loads for sale on ebay as suggested above.

Also ring up local DJ's with cheap adds in yellow pages or yell.com as they are probably cowboys with dated kit.

I should take that as an offense! I still use a pair of light screens and am as professional as many others on hear and am certainly not a cowboy DJ thank you very much!!!

If you want some twinkling Christmas lights sticking through a piece of cloth then go for the starcloth but if your after pretty colors, patterns and a slightly retro feel then the light screen is a great effect.

Sorry :) Just personal preference. Was not saying that all cowboy have lightscreens, just that cowboys have totally dated kit. Starcloths will be retro and NAFF at some point in the not too near distant future. There are many DJ's going out of business with pub gigs going down the pan and as a result they are selling their gear.

I actually think that light screens will come back but will be much easier to store and transport. I helped a DJ once and half his car was filled with the light screens. Seemed like a waste of space to me.

First build your box. Then wire in 16-20 ish domestic batten lamp holders. Fit coloured golf ball 25w bulbs. Connect the wires to a Bulgin socket, and fit a sheet of perspex to the front. Then buy a sequencer or similar. If the thought of that fills you with dread, I'd guess that virtually everyone over 30 on here has some old ones which are surplus to requirements! I know i've got seven, some of which were my pride and joy, once upon a time.

Not true, surely. Plenty of cowboys operate with little more than a brand new laptop, and a few hundred quids worth of kit from places like Maplins.

Having looked at an old thread on Banners, I'm tempted to get a designer mate to come up with a possible design, as I have a printer contact who could get me one on the cheap...professional looking, free advertising, eyecatching and easy to transport/pack away...

I bought a vinyl banner a while back, for the front of my flightcase. I recall only using it the once (at a youth festival). It was a waste of money for me as it's too 'in your face' for the majority of the events I do. :( It's never been used since.

Hmmm, yes that was featured in the thread I looked at, with some louder designs (which I thought looked o.k) but now you've said that....I'm leaning back towards the plain black front...the rebel in me just wants anything BUT a starcloth :D

Also...the slogan....did anyone ever bring you feet? Would have loved to see your reaction to someone turning up with a bag of pig trotters as payment...:D :D

Im thinking of an alternative? Any suggestions welcome.

I like using just a black cloth and setting the speakers/lighting away, so the dj bit is separate now.

I totally agree. The picture was from an engagement party in a bar, so more informal.

im getting a couple of pop up banners done for behind the set up soon which will be more subtle. :) Can use them for wedding fairs too. only take ten seconds to put up.

i had thought of building a box for the front on the perspex putting some shapes or famous land marks in the northeast like angle of the north, tyne bridge ect then painting the rest of the perspex black then inside putting either a uv tube or a led tube or both so could have the shapes lit up either uv or led what would you think of that

Ive also been toying with different frontage ideas, at the moment its just black canvas.
I do like the good light screen but dont have the space to carry, although am planning on getting a van soon.
I have thrown the idea around a few times about the star cloths but just dont like the idea as the majority now use them which also puts me of.

I like the banner "yourdj" has for none formal gigs, I'm doing mostly rock gigs so that idea feels good to me.

Thanks :) Its a bit of a pain as it is tied to the poles when not used with a DJ stand and at times people think it is solid and almost pulled it over when leaning on it for requests. That takes the longest to set up too.

Im gonna go for a simple back pop up banner and all the technical stuff out the way from now against walls etc. Bit like this (without the candles :p ):

Funny you should say that. I have a standard out of the shop light screen but i find by putting a UV tube at the bottom of the light screen it gives a really good effect as the UV slowly fades as it go's up the screen. Looks really impressive and for weddings i don't actually plug the lights in just put the UV in front of it.

Hya mate, I know allot dont like the light boxes mainly as they are classed as old hat.
My mate uses them and to be honest with the setup he has when you walk in the room it does look a spectacular light show and does have that WOW factor.
Get it in a large hall and thats were you see the real difference when he puts them all in.
From what I see these days quite a few rely on the truss lighting to give the effects, trouble is though some of them lose their effect if no smoke is used, light boxes carry on regardless of smoke being used.

Thats the ones i use too:) but mine is re-badged under DAP Audio. Also these are a few inches taller and wider than alot of the other light screens.

The shapes come as a result of fitting plywood in the pattern you want. Why do I get the feeling this is a project too far for you as yet? ;) :D
Seven light boxes, and two Ryger controllers in my case! I suspect as I said earlier, most folk over 30 will be in the same boat, except see below. ( or above for piccy)

I had a light box with a matrix of 5 by 5 lamps that could spell out words.

Hya Gaza yeh they do look good, i.e. the iron cross design.
When my mate has his small show he has a lightning box that he made in the center and a propeller box either side running opposite direction to each other again home made to a high standard (I know as I built the carcases for him), on each end he has a 4 gang spot bank running in sequence with the opposite end and a UV lit name box in the center.

Looks very, very good.
