buffet music?

Just reading the 'TO BUFFET?' thread, made me think of asking you;

what do you usually do throughout the buffet, music wise?

personally i hate buffets, or more to the point - the timing of them! id rather be able to carry on with the party than have everybody disappear for some food just as its getting going.

I slow the music down a little but not much, maybe play some classic soul groovy stuff, just to keep the party going. Ive seen DJs in the past turn the music right down and play unbelievable slow songs for over an hour, bore everyone, then by the time theyve put the party stuff back on theres only 30 mins of the night left!

be interesting to see how people work round buffets?

At the 50th i did back in March, they had some guy playing a steel pan, then he had a break and we played background music, then he went back on, and came off for the buffet, were once again we played background music (paolo nutini & corrine bailey rae) then after the buffet we put on all the party stuff.

I nearly always suggest to clients that we play background music 'cos people don't eat and dance at the same time.

It's a natural break and people can relax and chat while they eat.

I normally play a few slowies, bit of swing and a few non dance floor fillers.

I also believe that you need to get the buffet served at the right time....or it can all go a bit Pete Tong....serve it to early and some guests feel like second class citizens...too late and no one wants to dance.....IMO

Depends on the party.

If it's an 18th, I'll often mix the music myself.

If it's a 'general party' - I tend to use Capital Radio 'Just Great Songs', which people know but I wouldn't get requested.

For wedding, dinner-dance - I've a 'Smooth Jazz' CD I use.

All work fine for me.

We usually (but not all the time) put a 60's or 70's megamix CD on during the buffet. - Its 2 tracks and they each last for about 20 mins!

The "norm" round these parts is to have the buffet fairly early (8:30 is about right) and not start the disco 'proper' until after the food about 9-ish.

But if we do have an 'early session' then the buffet slot usually gets used to play those requests not really suited to a full dancefloor.

Unless the customer has specified eg. a bit of swing.

I normally announce the buffet, but carry on playing similar music at the same volume...and there are often a handful of people (usually young women) who would rather dance than eat.

The only thing I do when they're eating is to avoid playing any bankers.

I find the buffet usually comes out shortly after I've started properly, and think it would break things up too much if I turned down the volume & put on some easy listening stuff while they noshed.

Thats the norm for me too.

For weddings i play love songs from across the generations to mix it up abit but stay with the theme and mood of the night. In general party's depending on the audience i sometimes play some cheese that everyone has forgotten about, sometimes i play 70's and 80's tunes that are not likely to fill the dance floor but are still good tunes and very rarely i stick on a megamix CD of some kind. Depends on the audience though to what i play.

I find that near the end of the buffet is a great chance to try out songs you would not normally play.

I have to admit this is the one thing I find odd about 'the norm' for UK weddings, in NZ the usual run of the night is dinner (usually buffet, but sometimes a la carte from about 6:00pm) with speeches before or during (usually between mains and dessert), cutting of the cake, first dance (at around 9:00), party. Very occasionally the dancing slows down a bit when the cake gets passed around or added to the tea/coffee/cheese and biscuits table, but not often ;)
