I think might finally have pieced together a soundsystem for myself!

I found a D&B Audiotechnik one that I really liked, then I found out the price - knew there was a reason I liked it - 15 grand :eek:

So now I'm looking at JBL JRX115 (x2) & JRX118s (x2) and Crown XLS802 & XLS602 (plus a spare) all tweaked through a dbx DriveRack PA (which has tuned presets for JBL and Crown hardware). Should be able to get it all for under two grand.

Comments? Queries? Suggestions?

OK, since nobody is prepared to give you a serious reply, it falls to me again.
At the moment, RCF seems to be flavour of the month if absolute quality is your main aim. Don't ask me which ones, cos I know naff all about them, but shouldn't be too tricky. I've just realised that you've chosen passive, which makes my first choice less helpful, but allows my second, which would be my fave. Peavey UL115 Subs, with UL15's above. Crown amps are well regarded, so no probs there, you'll work out what matches I'm sure.

The main reason I was looking at Wharfedale was that nearly everyone in non-dj circles knows and respects the name AND they look quite nice which makes it a marketable addition to the rig.

I would love to be able to get RCF ART or Mackie gear but purely on price I can't do it at this stage (I looked very seriously at the S215 and S218s combo with FRS 2800 amps). In the case of RCF and Mackie the look was there, as was the power and Mackie, at least, is another name with good penetration into the non-DJ market.

I haven't looked at Peaveys, to be honest, and that's probably just down to the fact that they always make me think of practice guitar amps. OK, had a look at the Peaveys you mentioned - price-wise on a par with Mackie for the subs and Wharfedale for the tops (amongst the most expensive I looked at, therefore). The correct Crown amp to drive them efficiently was WAY too expensive but the PV2600 was a reasonable price. Still comes out just below the Mackies in overall price.

Crown amps are virtually made for JBL and vice versa, especially when run through the tuning section in the DBX DriveRack PA so it's as close to having a perfectly tuned amp/speaker combo as you can get without going active (which I won't... I have my reasons).

See, that's the funny thing, I LIKE toppy sounding systems - I'd rather have bright tops that I have to EQ down a bit than vice versa, it's very hard to fix a muddy-sounding speaker to sound brighter.

Not many disco shops in rural Wiltshire, either ;)

With toppy sounding cabs you cant correct it by cutting the top end.

Your stuck with it in my experience, if you cut too much you get muffled.

Right matey, on the principle of sheer bloody mindedness, here's the Class-D system I would buy if I had £2000 in my pocket, and wanted a lovely, top grade, versatile low cost rig.

If you are not impressed by that, all I can say is that I've heard Justin's rig, which is one grade down in bass and mid, and it's truly superb when all wired up that way. Looks good too, we both get favourable comments from punters.

Yep, must admit, I really like the Class-d but I also appreciate they're not to everyones tastes. I'm very happy with my rig and am very greatful to Peter for all his help & wisdom ;)
One thing I know for sure is that any upgrade to my system will be with further Class-d equipment. However, I'm reckoning that will be a way off yet. Next big purchase would be an active crossover & another 1400W c-mark amp, but will have to save a little first :(

The thing I dislike about the full-range speakers you linked to, Peter? The horn curved to fit the top of the woofer. I don't like the look and, from what little I know about horn design, there's no good acoustic reason to do it. That's just me, of course, and we all have to be happy with what we have, don't we? ;)

Seriously, I was given a reason for the shape of that horn, valid or not I don't know enough to say, but the same one is used on many other cabs now, as the horn flare is not exclusive to any single cab builder( Cerwin Vega, and Intimidation to name but two I think) . As long as you ) and more importantly your punters) are happy with what you eventually get, that's the object of the exercise. :D :D

I think rather than "ignoring" you meant to say " I hear what you're saying" . A politer way of saying you're ignoring ( good? ) advice. :D :D

Now that is a good looking, fantastic sounding and not over a realistic budget piece of kit.

Although I would go with the Peavey amps as they are matched and also have inbuilt crossovers.
