I've got the night off

I have a very good agent called Rob Merralls from Beejay Entertainments who I do lots of good gigs for at nice venues for lovely people at good fees. There is also another guy, who I shall not name, who rings me up now and then to offer me work. Everytime I accept a gig from him it is trouble. He has a big flashy website and runs a big show himself and charges top of the market fees. He rang me a few weeks ago for tonight for a Summer Ball for a local hospital to be held at a very nice local golf club where I have worked before. By chance I was free. Jan said "Tell him we're booked" but no I said we would do the gig. Earlier in the week I realized that I had had no contract or confirmation from him; so I rang him but got his wife and left a message. This morning whilst we were both out he rang and left a message on the ansaphone to say that he had written to me 2 weeks ago to say the gig was cancelled.:bang: Strange its the one bit of post I dont appear to have received.:rolleyes:
Fortunately I had not turned down any other gigs for tonight; so we are just about to get out the bicycles and cycle down to the pub for a meal as the weather here this evening is beautiful. They say its an ill wind that blows nobody any good.:)

I've also got this evening off after a few non-stop weekends of DJing. Did a kiddies party this afternoon though.....just to get my ears ringing and Cotton Eye Joe stuck in my head.....

i'm off too ....... having a night in with the kids and a few doovdes, oh yeah been and bought a new bike today from Halfords too , taking it to physio next week and telling them I want to use it should be a kodak moment. :D :D :D :D

Me too---my Boat is in dock so cant take advantage of the reasonable weather--as im not usually around I did not realise how BAD the Entertainment on TV is Saturday night after about 7pm.

Its enough to make you go out somewhere--

Im not sure who these people are slumped in front of a TV Saturday night whose excuse for not selling tickets or attending social events is--oh theres lots to watch on the telly you know.

I had a similar problem with a friend who sometimes gave me work, but there was always something awkward or problematic with his bookings.

We fell out over one such booking which he tried to stitch me up with & I plainly refused to do.

That was at least five years ago...and we haven't spoken since.

Am I bothered?

It was very windy but sunny and dry. The rain didnt arrive till Sunday.

I think you got the wrong end of my point--

I worked for many years for a large Company with people in the Insurance business and made a lot of friends from customers who I still know.

However in the self employed market as we are I think things are different--
you dont get a basic salary, bonuses,cheap mortgage, 6 weeks paid holiday plus a Company Car and "free" petrol plus a Final salary pension scheme before you get out of bed---like I used to.

So every job counts as a profit centre--if not im going to retire properly:D

I think you overlook the point that if the job goes wrong or you are owed money there is no hesitation in reaching for a phone to your Solicitor--:rolleyes:

I deliberately dont use my neighbour who we are friendly with for Building work--for this very reason.

A very good friend of mine who runs a Band has played at two parties for me--I insisit that I pay him and the band the full going rate.

As it happens I do one gig a year for free in my village as a contribution to the community.

Not everyone.
I'd like to think that I could try and sort it out through talking to people in most cases.

America has a lot to answer for.

I'd also hope for a similar response from most of my friends.
