Thoughts, hopefully helpful.
1: Choose your machine not on cost, but on features, and how it suits you and your style.
2: Work out the total cost, not forgetting HD's and licences.
3: Rip carefully and methodically.
4: Have adequate sized HD's and ample backup for the digital bits. Whatever you use as playout backup is up to you.
5: Make some "Aide Memoires" ( Playlists typed out or whatever suits you. )

Which brings me to Problems. ;)
I'm very happy with Media Monkey as an index/auxiliary playout system, so don't anybody suggest a dedicated DJ program, I neither need nor want one.
The thing is, as I've found out, it's possible with one mouse click to create an Excel database, which can be filtered and searched easily with the laptop. I went into print preview, and at a ten point font it's 579 pages!!:eek: Thoughts anyone? I just fancy a paper copy, rather than a laptop screen. :confused:

Edit: Supplementary question, how do I most easily synchronise three HD's? Somehow they're showing different track numbers, so I'd like to put everything on all so as not to lose what I've done.

Wow...I never thought I could say this, but it looks like our thoughts are very similar, because...


1: Choose your machine not on cost, but on features, and how it suits you and your style.

That's exactly what I did. I chose the D2 based on the features I wanted rather than cost.


2: Work out the total cost, not forgetting HD's and licences.

Also exactly what I did. Despite the fact that the D2 was only about £300, my total budget for the digital move was £1,000...which is exactly what I spent. However, I'll now need to add some more for a certain licence which didn't exist when I did my original budgeting.


3: Rip carefully and methodically.

I also did this, and feel certain my tagging is 99% accurate, with the only errors being small spelling mistakes & the odd upper case letter typed as lower case...so nothing too drastic!


4: Have adequate sized HD's and ample backup for the digital bits. Whatever you use as playout backup is up to you.

I do.

My ipod is 80Gb, which is double the size of my current music collection, so way more extra space than what I'll need to add the new stuff I get between now & when I retire.

The back up will be a second ipod, a memory stick loaded with my 200 most played songs and two single CD players (one built into my new digital console & another spare). If the D2 packs up, I also have the option to plug an ipod directly into my mixer...so I think I've got enough back up sorted!


5: Make some "Aide Memoires" (Playlists typed out or whatever suits you.)

I've already done this through playlists in my itunes/ipod/D2.

So far I have a couple for background music, one for my 100 most played songs, one for general dance music, one for slow songs and another for current music.

I'm thinking of adding a few more, as playlists are so easy to create, and you can quickly send either the whole playlist or individual tracks from it to the D2's crate.

Issues of licences and costs apart, every time I do a Digital gig, I realise I could never go back to CD's! I'm still getting the bugs out of the system ( If I had to do it all over again, I'd make a better job of ripping, but when I started it, I knew nothing! It's been a steep[ learning curve. ;) ) , the od track or album not there, but the Minidisc safety net caught every one last night. :D Many of us are going to moan and groan publicly and privately about the licence, but I've got to say the cost of it pales into insignificance compared to the benefits. Hey ho, flex the credit card next week then.
