New Mixer & Dual CD Player - Advice please

Hi All

I don't post that often here but I am a regular reader and I have learnt a lot from this forum and have drastically improved my setup and do appreciate everything I have learnt from this forum.

I'm looking for a new Mixer & CD player, my old CD Mix 2 is on its last legs and has had to be repaired 3 times in the last 6 months.

I have a budget of about of £400 and I need the following.

1) Mixer with four main channels and at least one mic channel. 3 band eg on each.

2) Very basic CD player, not too expensive, it's only for backup and if a client gives me a CD, my main playout is laptop.

3) Flight case for above with room for future expansion i.e. HDD controller & DMX controller.

I recently bought the American Audio Q-Spand mixer from phase one as a backup mixer and also something for quiz nights and to be honest it is a very nice sounding mixer and the faders are very very smooth for a budget mixer.
Very well reccomended if you ask me.

Numark CDN22 Mk2 i owned one of these when i was back on cd but found the lack of anti shock not very good for my needs so i upgraded to a denon, i would look at getting a cd player with anti-shock.

Good point, I have anti shock now and you do need it in some venue's. Will have to spend a little more on the players then!

Similar case for half the price - I use these for years and have had no problems. Will give you extra £££ for cd and mixer.

Agree with comments about the anti-shock on the numark. I used one (now only for backup's backup) and found they did skip a lot.

Have not had much experience with different mixers so can't comment.

I have a numark CD player which seemed to work well.
Then I realised after I put it on a speaker to play it doesnt have anti shock !
It skipped and jumped like crazy.....

I would go for something a bit better with anti shock drives.

In my house !

I have a deck stand for gigs.

Having said that vibration through the floor could upset the cd player too.

My advice is to buy an Cd player with anti shock.

most players come with anti shock, denon-pioneer being top end and numark and kam being the middle - budget range, i have had many numark players and found that the draws start to dry up a little bit, so a lil lube might be needed !

Vinyl was a different matter though...Coins on the headshells....;)

I remember the vinyl days too.

Had a gig in a village hall and there was no stage so I had to set up on the dance floor. The floorboards were all loose and moving around so as soon as someone walked or danced in front of the decks the needles jumped even with weights on them. I had to ask everyone to dance away from the decks !

Yes, vinyl was worse, but you obviously never had any really dodgy venue floors when you used CD players without anti-shock...or you would have soon known about it!

It's quite simple really...in this thread I am talking about the much higher chance of CDs jumping if the players don't have anti-shock.

In the other thread I was talking about the chances of a CD player going wrong or packing up (regardless of whether it has anti-shock or not) being higher than that of a hard drive packing up due to all its moving parts (motors, belts, drawers, lasers etc).

The two discussions are completely different!

What can't you figure out about THAT?

The CDN88 and CDN95 both have something like 45 seconds of RAM-buffered anti-shock memory not sure how far down the range that level of shock protection goes. In the days of my Denon DN1000 they merely had vibration absorbing drawers... is Denon RAM-based now?

Thanks, mixer does not meet my requirements as it does not have 3 band eq on each channel, but I'm likeing the look of the CD Players though, allthough for what I will use them I'm still not sure if it's worth spending the extra money and buying some with antishock.

I would definitely go anti-shock.
There is nothing worse than standing behind your decks with the CD jumping and you cant do anything.

The anti-shock is vital if your on the same floor as the dancers.

I've ended up with Numark CM200 USB, Numark CDN 22 and protex flight case.

I'm very happy with the mixer, it is very easy to work with and I like the fact it has 2x integrated USB sound cards, just plug the lappy straight into the mixer. Virtual DJ recognised them instantly.

I know what your thinking, after all the advice about buying CD player with anti shock he's gone and bought some without. Well, I gave it a lot of thought, the cheapest players in my local shop with anti shock were nearly £200 which I know is still cheap for dual players but I'm on a tight budget and I could not justify the extra as I will hardly use the players, they are there for backup only. I've done two gigs with it now and not even turned the players on.

It all looks professional and neat.

Nice to see the CD controller angled nicely.
I usually make my own boxes for things and made the mistake of making my CD controller face up. I also place a CD rack above the CD controller which meant when I looked at the controller I cracked my head on the cd rack DOH !

I took the enclosure apart and angled the controller at 45 degrees and it is good now.
