Having looked at quite a few of this forums members websites, I just wondered why in each gallery section there are pictures of your Disco's but not you?

There's neither a picture of my disco or me in my gallery images (which really need updated, thanks for the reminder). It was a conscious decision to just show images of people enjoying themselves...which is the service I'm selling.

Sure we're part of the package, but the clients and their guests are more important to me (or than me). I've never had a client query why there's not a picture of me or my setup on the website. I aim to "sell the dream", not the equipment or myself. ;)

Why would it not be important? surely anybody could take a picture of a crowd enjoying themselves and pass it on as their gig? Wouldnt it be best to put yourself in the same frame as the people enjoying themselves to give it credibility?

Regardless of what you look like, a pic won't convey ANYTHING about the service you will provide, and that's what matters, so I don't think it's particularly important.

Having said that, my site does have a pic of me, but not on the home page or disco page...It's hidden away at the top of my quiz nights page, which is one of the least viewed pages on my site. Just as well, really!

Does it not hurt to have 1 picture? It doesnt have to be a cheesy one, it could be you in action. Or even better still a youtube clip of you performing, and i dont mean watching your lights, you in action introducing the bride & groom, demonstrating your presenting skills.

Of course a picture of the dj conveys something to the customer. There are very few people who are not predjudiced by personal appearances. Why do advertisers use attractive models or personalities when advertising their poducts. The image of the person colours your view of the product.

As it happens it shows me in a tuxedo and bow tie and clearly of mature years. A totally different image and one which to me conveys the sorts of gigs I want to attract.

The point I'm making is that if you looked at 10 disco sites, all of which showed a pic of a middle aged DJ in a suit (which many of them do), then how would you know from the pics which of the 10 would provide the best service?

Seriously, as I often work alone or with a camera-illiterate roadie, it's very difficult to take self-portraits without the use of mirrors. Especially from the DJ position which is where I spend most of the gig.

It is however very easy to get pics of the floor before you.

Maybe I need to appoint a studio photographer with a very good airbrush :D

I would agree that Live performers should have promotional pictures, often depicting them in action and/or costume, 'cos that's what the audience will be viewing in the spotlight.

However on most occasions the DJ is pretty much discretely behind the lights & decks in a darkened environment.

With reference to you 'holiday apartment' analogy, do you get pictures of Manuel the concierge ??.

Therefore what's wrong with showcasing the effect rather than the person responsible ??.

I like my image to be a nice surprise at client meetings :)

Not a lot I'd guess.

But then a lot of my customer meetings start off with "We recognised you from your picture" and it makes walking into public places and trying to identify the person/s most likely to be waiting for a DJ a little easier :)

Rob you seem to underestimate yourself

You're spot on there, as that's something I've been told many times over the years.

However, I'd rather be someone who underestimates himself than the opposite, many of whom I've met & could not STAND! (I'm not suggesting you are like that, by the way!).

In my experience, people who underestimate themselves are easier to get on with than those who make it obvious that they think they're the best thing since sliced bread.

It's not really a case of whether it's true.

I simply asked people without a pic how many of their enquirers have asked them for a photo, and then stated that I've NEVER had such a request, so in MY experience (which is all I have to go on) then yes - it IS true!

3 events companys that I know insist on a picture if its a DJ they havnt used before. Its impossible for me to give you a percentage ratio.

As you are aware some clients are more fussy than others. Its just my opinion that a picture of you on your website is a good thing, and its just my opinion.

I find it interesting because it's something I've NEVER experienced, even though I've done a fair number of the "higher end" functions you're referring to, including some very posh gigs at some of London's top hotels, one of which was the Savoy.

I would hazard a guess that when you did the Savoy it was through an agent who was acting on behalf of the hotel? Therefore you are just the Hotels own DJ, the end user had no idea who you were. And they were probably quite happy with that. I mean dealing with clients head on, not just as a hotels supplier. I spent many years in the West End Hotel circuit and flashy as it sounds you are just the ''hotel dj'', a bit like the house wine that gets put on the tables, with the table cloths and the waiting staff. You are part of the Hotel furniture, in most cases, not all.

In the case of that particular function, yes.

However, I've done a number of other high-end gigs where I was booked directly by the client (including some at other London hotels), and I've still never been asked for a photo.

Looking at the posts in this thread, you seem to be the only one who gets asked for a photo...so I'm still at a loss to understand why this might be.

Because I work in the industry selling Entertainment to prodominately the higher end market, some clients like to see a picture, some dont. I was just wondering why people have pictures of people dancing but not a picture of themselves on their sites. All im saying is 1 picture is fine, do you disagree with 1 picture on your disco page?

Don't get me wrong...I'm not saying nobody should have their pic on their website, just that I think doing so will bring little or no benefit, and could even be counter-productive.

Some people, myself included, might think that a pic of a DJ on their site is either cheesy or gives the impression of "Look at me - aren't I wonderful!"

However, if you find it works, then I don't expect you to stop doing it!

I agree again Shaun. No-one has ever asked how big the speakers are, how much power the amps have, how many lights we use, or anything technical.

Personally I think our (my) personality and image shows alot when we chat to a prospect. I can tell within a minute whether we're right for each other and I'm sure the prospect can too. Regardless of seeing a pic of my ugly mug!

Yes I do as has been explored on this forum before but I would say that there is a skew on my work to older birthday parties, nice weddings and formal do's.
I may perhaps be different to many others on here in that people who book my services do so because they are booking me - not some faceless service with loads of lights and ultra modern sound system. I am a human and provide an interactive service called entertainment for other humans.

No not at all and it wasnt my intention to imply otherwise. My point is that whilst my sound system is in my opinion very good and the lighting I provide is attractive and creates an atmosphere I do not major on the hardware.
