Oddest Gig

Probably been done before but a couple of quick searches didn't find much.

What's the oddest occasion or location you've provided a disco at?

I think for me it's a toss-up between the "life celebration" (aka funeral) of which I've done 3 or 4 over the years, or it'll be the annual OAP care home Christmas Party I used to run when I lived oop north several years on the trot.

Mine was about 4 years back for a group of milkmen and their wives - I tried and tried and tried but all they did was talk all night as the party was a 'farewell' due to their depot closing.

Spoke to the organiser part way through the evening and she said "don't worry - we are loving the music - so just keep playing it" - they even turned the room lights back on and told me to turn mine off so they could see to talk. Just gave me the excuse to have a good dig around in my collection and play things I rarely play.

Well its a karaoke night for a team building weekend for mums and dads and there kids...Weird i think??

Let me explain.

It was in a restaurant with very high ceilings. At one end of the room were some toilets with a roof about 10 feet above the ground. There was then a large gap between the roof on the toilets & the roof of the actual restaurant.

I seem to remember it was a restaurant in Kingston & I'm pretty sure it was a new years eve. When I arrived & asked where to set up, I was amazed when the guy pointed to the toilet roof & said "up there" please.

I was wondering how on earth I'd get up there, when it was pointed out that there was an aluminium step ladder at the side leading up to the roof!

In those days, I had very heavy gear including big home-made speakers between 4 and 5 feet high, and I have no idea how I got up the ladder carrying them. All I can remember is that it nearly killed me.

I like to be approachable for requests during a disco, which was hardly the case on this occasion...Now & again a head would appear at the side, when someone had partially climbed the ladder to give me a request.

The whole situation was ludicrous, but at least it was something a bit different!

I don't think I've had any thats been that odd:confused: Had a venue once where the dance floor was actually behind me and pretty much in the next room which was different.

I've had one or two ladder/Balcony gigs! Stading on a table, passing decks and spoeakers over a rail. or up through a trapdoor! In those days, Health and Safety weren't paramount!!:eek: :D :D :D

I can't say I've ever had any "odd" gigs. I've had a few divorce parties, apart from that...nothing.

my oddest was a gig for a deaf/blind guys 60th birthday. Lovely people....but the people with some hearing and hearing aids needed the music at almost a whisper, and the totally deaf wanted it loud so they could feel the vibration.
The floor filler of the night was the hokey cokey

Many years ago, I got a series of gigs in a Police Social Club, down Inglemire Lane in Hull. Not the most salubrious place in the world, every time the door opened, the creaking of the hinges was like a bad B-movie, cracked me and my "Roadie" up every time.:D Anyway, it was supposed to be for the use of Police Officers and families, and we got a booking which rang alarm bells. Turns out it was for the Students at the local Uni! Turned up for the gig, steward not happy, as no proper confirmation of gig, he's just turned up in case someone's big night is ruined, so we start up, and steward is even less happy, when he find out who the gig is for! Helpfully he says we can go ahead, but if any top brass turn up, well...................................
As if on cue, they do in fact turn up, having fancied a half of lager after their game of bowls. Nothing gets past them, and they close the bar, but allow the party to continue. then follows the most amazing announcement I have ever had at a Disco" Eat as much of the buffet as you can, we're moving across to the Uni." We derigged, drove across town, carried gear upstairs through punters who had obviously got there before us, and set up a (smaller) rig. At this point I sent my trusty roadie( actually a drinking companion, who liked the glamour of the mobile disco ) off to the bar with money, and was surprised to see him come back wearing an expression that suggested somebody had just shot his dog! " They've closed the bar" :eek: :eek: :bang: :bang: Fortunately, for some strange reason, we had a "Party Four" in the car. ( I'll let someone else explain about Party Fours and Sevens to our younger readers) and when we had garnered a couple of receptacles, normal service was resumed. :D

my oddest gig was 2 rolled into one inside was a 13th birthday party for a girl and all her teenage mates ......

outside was a final get together for her mum of family and friends as she had sadly been diagnosed with terminal cancer and given not very long to live ....

very odd atmosphere teens jumping around dancing as they do with the odd request from a tearful adult ,
