Hiring equipment

Had a look around the forums, couldn't find much on this subject...

Got my first big(ish) gig in September, need to make a good impression as I want to push for some decent Christmas gigs etc.

Money's a bit tight at the moment, so I was considering hiring lights etc. Does anyone have any experience on doing this, I appreciate it's money down the drain. Just looking to see if bad experiences have been had with dodgy hirers demanding money for non existant scratches etc etc....

I have a few dealings with hire companies when i need bigger Pa systems, If you are wanting more work then just provide what you can never go out and push the boat out and spend aload of money hiring big kit.

I have found if i hire an external company they arrive with the kit set it up and leave me to it unless they send a sound or light engineer.

Hiring can be a costly thing and can run up a big bill before you know it, if you are wanting to hire kit why not try Jamie Whitehouse @ Paul James Promotions i know he does some conference work where he puts some big kit in.

I can't obviously speak for anyone else on here, but I'd be inclined to think that there are people on here with kit which isn't used on a regular basis. That might be available for hire as a cheaper option, if possible.

I quite agree. There are times when bigger PA may be needed but to be honest I think you will be 'advertising' something your not. Stick with what you are capable of doing - unless you are planning to use hire companies on a regular basis.

Since it is lighting you are looking for, in my opinion, there are plenty reasonably priced lighting effects on the market and you will be far better off purchasing rather than hiring. Remember you need enough lights but 99% of clients aren't bothered what sort you have or what they do.

Another option would be to ask another local dj to help out.

Actually, I don't think it is money down the drain for a one off event, 'cos I'm pretty sure that any hire is 100% tax deductable.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, I'm sure...

Use a professional supplier, and you will be fine

Will probably try to save up and get some of my own lights before the gig.

If money is tight why not work out what you want/need, have a look round at prices and ask some of your family or freinds if they could lend you the cash (interest free of course).

Get another dj to lend you spare stuff. If you go and collect, leave deposit and drop off should not cost much. My local hire company blu arrun only charge about £40 for a 1k rig.

I have a spare rig and i would be interested in easy money from a DJ as they know how too look after kit.
