Why did i have to be ill!

Hey,

Over the past 3 days, i've become really quite ill, i won't go into detail, but have majorly bad tonsilitus, headaches, throat/ear pain etc.

I happen to have a disco this wednesday, and cannot let them down, as i am the 'back-up' DJ anyway, because there regular DJ has cancelled on them. What do i do?! I'm trying not to talk, as it makes it worse, so do i try and get hold of some jingles? I may be having a friend come along with me, so would it be best to get him to do the talking?

I would definately recommend you take your friend (even if you have to pay him something). You'll be glad of the hand with taking the gear in and out and helping set up, especially if you have a 'pounding' head.

I would only recommend you let him talk if he is happy and confident in doing so, otherwise, explain yourself to the organisor and just play music. I'm sure they'll appreciate your situation and probably more so if they know your under the weather and still doing it. Many wouldn't!

Sorry to hear you have been poorly Ollie. I dont like jingles much; so I would opt for taking someone to help you. I assume you have seen the doctor and he has prescribed something for you. If so keep taking your medicine and get plenty of sleep for the next couple of days and you may feel better by Wednesday. On a recent thread here white grapes were endorsed as very good for sore throats; so eat plenty of them.

Firstly, don't tell the customer (in my opinion), it will only worry them. Secondly, if it isn't until saturday, you have a few days to get through the worst of it and then hopefully be ok. You'll only make yourself worse if you start worrying about it now (I sound like an old woman here).

I've done gigs in the past where I have been ill and it's not good. DJing in front of a crowd who are all enjoying themselves yet you feel rough isn't ideal. I've had times where I have DJ'd and suffered with really bad...wait for it....Man Flu and that was the worst. Sometimes the adrenalin keeps you going though.

I meant when he gets there, not before the event. And al he has to say is something along the lines of "sorry I can't talk much over the mic tonight as I've got a really bad throat and haven't been well the last few days"

theres a few days left yet mate try to refrain from talking too much until then take a trip to the doctors and see what they recommend they might be able to give you something that will get you through the 4 or so hours of the gig.

its why i allways say make your own pre-made jingles using your own voice for when you hit problems like this, only takes a mircophone, basic recording/editting software and a cd burner, take my advice and do it people, cheers

how can sumthing natrual, sound cheesey ?, when i say jingle i dont mean music and all this :Censored:, stuff like the buffet is now open,enjoy your food, so then if you have loss your voice, you have a back up voice on a disk ?, talks sence doesnt it ?

i have had this and it was not nice. I had very bad guts and required the use of the toilet every 10 to 15 mins i was in a bad way and lost over a stone in weight with this illness. It was in Feb when that really bad flu was going round i was glad when it was all over and i was still ill by the following wednesday nasty

I've been to the doctor numerous times, as i have been off school to majority of the past 4 weeks. They say it's a viral infection rather than a bacterial. It is tonsilitus, however there is also a viral version as well as a bacterial one. So it's just plenty of fluids and rest! I think i'll be okay for wednesday, but will just have to take it easy!

Theo, I've spoken to my mate, and he is more than happy to do the mic work for me!

Got exactly the same thing had it from last wednesday. Must be goign around in the northampton area. What type of gig is it you have on wednesday?
If it doesnt require much mic work you may get away with it without help.

Over last week i had a series of these symptons, then friday night my voice went really husky and hoarse, I was really worried saturday as i had a wedding on but i had to do it, didnt have anyone that could come with me and help me out, I went out and got aload of beechems all in one syrup and took alot of does of that to try and get my voice back, i drank lots of water and also alot of lockets, i managed to do a fair bit of talking but found it hard to do so but the show had to go on.

Hi Ollie. Just thought I'd add some advice - after all it was me who had the bad throat and lost voice and who found out that white grapes straight from the freezer (yes freezer!) helped to some extent.

It was a viral infection with the symptoms of glandular fever and I had it pretty bad. I came home from work on the Thursday night feeling quite unwell. Friday morning I had a sore throat and it felt like I'd swallowed two golf balls and they'd stuck in my throat! I had a 21st birthday karaoke disco on the Friday night and struggled through that - just!

I woke up Saturday morning with no voice at all. This was bad enough but I had a wedding disco to do on the Saturday night so I came on here for advice.

Some good advice on here but I'd just like to add that as soon as you get to your gig, seek out the client and explain (as best you can) your situation. I struggled to explain to the best man at the wedding I was doing and he helped out by making announcements and sorting out the first dance and speeches.

When a DJ talks, people often look at him.

If I was at a function, heard the DJ "talking on the mic" and looked up only to discover he wasn't actually talking, wasn't holding the mic, and it was obviously something which had been pre-recorded, I'd feel kind of cheated...a bit like if I went to a pop concert & noticed the artist was miming.


I've never even given a thought as to what I'd do if I lost my voice - I've never lost my voice in my life but I suppose there's a first time, and all that!

Beerfunk, I wouldn't worry about it too much, as the music is the most important thing by a mile...and not a DJ waffling on!

It's happened to me. In the days when I smoked, I often lost my voice completely for a day or more. On one occasion, it happened on the day of a wedding reception I was doing, and I could literally do no more than whisper.

On arrival at the venue, I whispered an explanation & apology to the bride & groom, then got on with playing the music...and did the entire gig without saying a word all night...as It was the only option!

It's just a case of getting on with it & doing the best you can...voice or no voice!

I've even done a pub quiz night with literally no voice whatsoever, although that's another story!

No, but that's not the same.

Most television programs don't go out live either, although either way you can't tell the difference, so it doesn't matter.

If a radio station says they are broadcasting live (as we did), or a tv show says it is live, then people have no reason to think that's not the case.

However, when you hear a DJ talking at a gig, and look at him...only to see he is not holding the mic & his mouth isn't even moving, it's blatantly obvious what's happening...which is why you might feel cheated or think he was a fake. For example, you might even wonder whether is was actually HIS voice you were hearing...or somebody elses.

I would never do this, but If I had to use pre-recorded announcements at a gig through having no voice, I'd at least hold the mic & mime along with the words, so it LOOKED like I was speaking live.

Why? because I just think it would look naff to hear the DJ apparantly talking on the mic, only to look at him to discover he wasn't.
