If I were to connect a CD or DVD drive to my Cortex, in the time honoured USB fashion, would it as I assume, read all tracks simultaneously, as per a flash drive or hard drive? I am loath to lose the minidisc, but future expansion
of a(nother) Cortex with a CD drive attached may be a way forward. The Numark is a bit pricey, but the new all in one(DDS 80 ? ) looks just about spot on. Just considering my options.

Can't answer for the Cortex, but the d2 has this ability with firmware 1.09 or above.

Not considered this because of the limitations.

Wouldnt another back up hard drive for the No 2 Cortex do the job as a full back up Peter?

Thats what I do.

It would be easier backup than using a Mini Disc

Yes cortex can use an external usb cd-rom as either an mp3 source or as a cd drive. In cd drive mode it is just a case of browse tracks liek you would prowse mp3's.

Even a Denon doesnt like firmware--apparently:eek:

I have a computer-style portable DVD/CD drive which I connect to the d2.

With it, I can play audio CDs or mp3's stored on CDR or DVDR.

Therefore, I can play CD's that someone hands to me or I have a backup device, whichever way you want to look at it. You can get a lot of music on a data DVD especially a dual-layer one :)

Course that small portable CD player I mentioned will come in handy in a years time when next year I play a few I tunes downloads that have been burned to CD and hopefully will not need a year 2 Pro dub licence---subject to what Theo has to tell us after pro dub give him a decision.

Not really....you just need to know who to use one......:boxer2:

It also helps having PCDJ red....rip CD onto laptop.....then play through laptop....delete it after.......and yes i can do that before we round the house's with ProDub...!!!

Then came the pro dub fiasco.

In year 2 of pro dub I dont want a licence. Do you?

I dont want to shell out £250 a year FOR NOTHING when I may only need to play a few legally downloaded updates to my collection through a small CD player--my need for acquisition of modern music is very small--thank goodness!

Sounds like good financial planning to me--99.99 per cent digital :D
