I'm venturing into unchartered waters this week running a pub quiz. Never attempted it before but always had a yearning to try it.

I'm getting the format sorted out but I'm a bit stumped with the jackpot question.

The pub I'll be at is in the New Forest with a camping site next to it, so 90% plus of the contestants will be coming from the site. This means they will probably only be there for the one weekly quiz. Therefore having a weekly rollover type jackpot might not be appealing to the vast majority.

So does anybody have a good idea for an instant type jackpot? Something that can be definitely won on the night, attractive and a little bit away from the norm.

Cheers

i have a little game called "open the box" basicly i go round charging people for raffle tickets, all the money from the raffle tickets, gets put inside a wooden box which is padlocked, you then select a ticket from a top hat, and the person has 2 or 3 gos to guess which padlock key on a bunch of like 5 will open the box, if no one wins the money gos to charity ect,

The "Open The Box" game is a good one but it's usually played as a "rollover" game where if no-one wins the prize money rolls over to the next week/next quiz.

For something a bit different, I would get a jam jar (or similar container) and fill it with some kind of beans (counting them as I put them in - time consuming, I agree, but worth it!). Then, for the jackpot question, simply ask "How many beans in the jar?". Each team/player writes down their guess and the nearest entry wins. Simple as that.

At a pub quiz i used to the pub used to charge the teams £5 each to enter the quiz, teams were 4 in a team, and the winning team at the end of it took home all the money that the teams had paid to play the quiz, it works out a hefty little sum, 10 teams at £5 each thats £50 take home.

I recently did exactly the same thing to make a change for my normal tie-break questions, and it went down well. I had a jam jar filled with smarties.

Alternatively, if you want a jackpot question that will be won each week, just ask something where the answer is a number or a year, and whichever team gets nearest to the correct number wins. I often use things like "In which year was ..... invented"

The problem with that is that if you have a couple, or three friends or even a single person who wants to do the quiz, they can't.

I think it's better to allow any number in a team (possibly up to a specified maximum) & to charge by the person (either £1, £1.50 or £2).

and the winning team at the end of it took home all the money that the teams had paid to play the quiz, it works out a hefty little sum, 10 teams at £5 each thats £50 take home.

Again, I wouldn't personally do it that way.

The larger the prize, the more likely mobile phones will be used to cheat.

Also, if you have more than one prize, then everyone has more chances of at least winning SOMETHING.

If I took £50 in pub quiz entry money, I'd pay out £30 for the first prize, £15 for second place and £5 for the team who came third.

After all, it's more about getting involved & having fun, rather than winning a big cash prize.
