Mic leads...

What's the general concensus on how long a balanced mic lead can be before signal degradation becomes an issue?

As far as i am aware it is the same as with a speaker cable length. Dependant on cores, mic in question as well as mixer etc. I use a short lead for most of my work (about 6 ft) this gives enough length to travel around the area I normally work.
For speaches I have a long cable (about 20 meters) the signal is definatly diferent to that on the short cable but nothing a little volume can't fix. And over that I would recomend use of a radio mic anyway for safety reasons.

for PA work we ofter use a 40m multicore plus 10m on stage with no ill effects, just make sure that your mic input on your desk is balanced as a lot are not.

Agreed as long as its not for karaoke

Not entirely true - you still need a lead from the receiver to the mixer. :p :D
