Speaker stands

Following on from the gaffa tape thread and the issue of safety. I thought I would bring up something I've been wondering about for some time now.

Now I know the obvious objections are going to be, 'too heavy' or 'too awkward to set up' etc but here goes aanyway.

Why do speaker stands have to be tripods. If they had four legs then they could be made with an area no bigger than the base of the average full range speaker. This would do away with the danger of people tripping over the legs. Not only that but they would be more stable. Stability could be furher enhanced by having the rears legs angled out slightly.
As for transporting them. They could be made collapsable with the use of pins in each leg. This could also allow for hight adjustment.

By the way. If any speaker stand manufacturers are reading this. I want 20% of all sales seeing as it's my idea :p :D :D :D :D

Because having the tripod legs extend outside the 'footprint' of the speaker base itself has the effect of lowering the centre of gravity and therefore improves the stability of the overall assembly.

True, the more legs you have the more you can increase stability, but they would also need to extend outside the footprint of the item being supported unless you had some way of embedding them in the ground.

a speaker stand with the same area as the base of my 15inch speakers, you would be asking for trouble if i were to pump up the volume, cheers

You can get speaker stands with 5 legs but I havent seen 4. Well I have not look for 4 legged one's anyway. lol

it dont matter about how many legs, its all about the area covered by the legs, which gives the speaker stand its great

Any three leg device will not "rock" if the floor is uneven, this is why tripods are so good. having a wider feet area makes it harder to knock over

3 legs are more stable , 4 legs would be easier to push over face on.

There is a general problem with setting up on a dance floor anyway.
I have a few rope lights and they cant be put on the floor if the same floor is the dance floor as people step on them.

Also the decks can get knocked sometimes upsetting a cd.
Or even someone knocking off a piece of expensive equipment.

I try not to set up too close to the front of the stage which leaves more elbow room for people dancing. I would rather they elbowed each other than my equipment.

The easy solution is to have bass bins with poles for the tops. Smaller footprint and just as stable (if not more)
I always take my bins now, even if it's a farily small disco.

I would say that is probably as stable as you would get short of bolting your speakers to the floor.
