what software?

I am looking for a software that is capable of removing either vocals or the actual music and leaving the vocals.
This is for creating my own custom mixes, I bought Adobie Audition a while back now and does a very good job when combining the tracks together or applying effects but a bit lacking when it comes to removing such as vocals and the music itself.
If it means buying a software dedicated for that purpose then no problem as long as it does to a high standard.

Another question is can you actually split the vocals and background as you can with say video etc?

Hi Karl,

I think you'll find this is generally very difficult. Some software will be better than others, and you'll have more success with some tracks than others depending how they're mixed, but is general it's not really possible to 100% split the vocals out from a fully mastered track reliably.

Steve is exactly right, I'd forget about it, or look for the acappellas on promo vinyl etc

Unless you get lucky and do manage to strip down to just the vocals (it is possible for a very small percentage of tracks, depending on how they were mixed down), your final track will have a muffled sound about it.

you could try using nero wave editor, comes complete with most copies of ahead nero burning rom, it's got quite a few different seetings give it a try and see what happens

Hya mate I did look in to that quite a while back before I bought Audition.

Karl, to do this successfully you'd need to get hold of the masters. CDs, vinyl, etc have already been through the final mix process to combine the various tracks that make up the end product. There is no software that I know of that is capable of undoing the final mix and getting the original tracks back. Some audio editors have a karaoke function but all this does is dampen down the frequencies mostly associated with vocals which produces muffled vocals.

As someone who makes his own mixes, I generally just use samples of audio and loop them which creates a vocal-free sound and is ideal for intros and outros.

Mind you, if you do come across any software capable of splitting audio in this way then let me know - it'd go top of my shopping list as this would help me in creating my karaoke tracks.

From what I can see now though it does look like am going to have to cut some samples from say the extended version of the track and do some modifying of the samples.
Its not a huge issue really but I reckon a good intro track can really kick a gig off in a positive way and in a way that puts the customers in a party mood from the off.

Ill keep searching and playing :)

Ill keep searching and playing :)I completely agree, and I used to make my own custom mixes for a lot of tracks. Abrupt intros and outros can work sometimes to good effect, but at other times you want a smoother transition.

I know that producers who "create" their own a cappellas for remixing purposes use a process of phase inversion to gradually strip the vocals away from the music and then use the above process to remove the music from behind the vocals.

In saying that, I've heard a lot of genuine acappellas which have veru audible background noice. I suppose it's all down to the studio it was recorded in, if indeed it was a studio.
