Last night we had a "busman's holiday" as we went to a venue to get some more bookings. Naturally, all 3 of us were also curious about the "competition" who work there at other times and the bar is cheap, too. :D
Well, what can I say, and, before anybody asks none of us did the "I'm a dj, too" line on the fellow. Also, I don't generally criticise others for cheap gear etc. If it works for them, fine.
I know that some djs sit while working, but not usually at the side of the stage, 6ft away from the gear. :eek:
I had to have a look at the gear because there was so much time between tracks, I thought he only had one cd player there. No, it was a double deck but I don't think he knew what the cross-fader was for. He got up, sorted another cd (all copies, by the way:Naughty: ) and put it on, but by then the previous track had ended. He actually managed at one point to have a gap of about 3 mins between tracks while he decided what to play next. :no: Then he would announce a foxtrot ...... and promptly play a waltz! :bang:
As for the rest of the show, his mic work was awful and he muttered something between most tracks, presumably to cover the silence. His sound was awful, not because of the speakers, they weren't that bad (Deltec). No, the tone was off, he appeared to have reverb on all night and the quality of those copied cds was diabolical, with the sound level jumping up and down on some tracks.
Lighting was minimal, one ropelight draped across between speakers, a rope light around a front board with his name on it and two disco balls from Woolies standing on the floor. I know they were from Woolies because I could see the sale stickers on the cardboard boxes he had them in.
I didn't ask him about PLI/PAT as I don't for one moment think he would have known what I was talking about. But we did point out to the chairman, who we were there to see, that he should be careful that nobody from the licencing authorities saw him and told him what could happen to the club if they did. He had thought that it would only mean the dj was prosecuted, not the venue. Ignorance is bliss, folks.
You can forgive unprofessionalism in young or new djs, who are just starting up and making their own mistakes on the way. However, this one has been going for years.

You've guessed it. "Well, he's cheap! We can't pay them all good money."
