Power Anti Virus 2009

Forgive me if I have posted in the wrong section, but this isn't actually disco related, just home use. Anyway, My Pc has been got at by the above, and I can't do anything with it, it's taken me half an hour to get to post this.
Does anyone know if this is genuine, malicious, or other??. I very nearly paid the £59.95 for 12 month cover, then googled it and found alot of sites disclaiming the software and telling you how to remove the anti virus alerts..!!!
Any assistance greatfully received.

First thing I would try is download Spybot which is free from http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html. Download, install and run it.

It that doesn't work, it may be a case of manual deletion. Are you using XP or Vista?

I had that on my computer and the only way I could get rid of it was to restore to a previous date.

running xp, didn't know which sites to trust to get rid of it, I'll attempt to get rid using your advice guys. Thanks so much in anticpation...!!!!.

Thats cool, XP is easier to deal with.

You may be able to stop it loading when you start by going to start>>run and type msconfig in the box then clicking on OK.

Have a look under the Services and Startup tags to see if there is anything that resembles the spywares name and untick the box then reboot. This should stop it from loading and makes it easier for spybot to remove (as well as making it easier to use the PC if the Spyware is not loaded).

If you are not sure if something should be there or not, use Google to establish if it is a valid program or not. Most of the ones with Microsoft next to them you can ignore and others will have obvious names like Adobe for example. Just check up the ones that aren't obvious.

But if in doubt, leave it alone and try Spybot.

Hya Mike, if you can do a system restore to a date prior to this being on your system, this will also get shut of it.

In my business this is one of the biggest issues that I regularly have to remove from PCs, it usually ends up were its almost impossible to run the PC as most tend to install countless antispyware and virus software to try to combat it, which in turn means an extremely slow system.
Most often though (not always possible) a simple system restore to a date prior to the infection will cure the issue and for the slow speed issue simply un install the antispyware etc. and this generally cures most of what am called out to sort.

That worked a treat. The spybot and malware didn't shift it.

Also worth looking at iolo's System Mechanic for keeping your computer running well (I use the professional version which has antivirus and firewall)... coupled with SpyBot (remember to install TeaTimer with SpyBot and remember to immunize after your first scan with SpyBot).

I did discover a really great spyware/malware removal tool a few months back which worked great at restoring system setting after SpyBot had done most of the donkey work but I've since restored wifey's machine and don't know the link (to make matters worse I only found it through a post on a forum and I can't remember the Google search string that I usedmto find it).
