Went in to work tonight(part time waitress) after being on a weeks holiday to find that i wasnt getting any tips in my wages because someone has stolen the tips box which contained over £2000.
At the end of every month the tips get split evenly between all members of staff so everyone gets their fair share anyway....I am so gutted and now i dont know who i can trust.....
The tips got locked away every night in a very heavy metal money box that i could barely lift so it takes a very strong person to lift that. I just hope they get caught......

That's bad news - sorry to hear it.
Should tips be in a metal money box though? I thought that officially they had to be banked and you had to pay tax on them these days?

i dont really know what happens to them at the end of the month. I think they get sent to head office and they deal with them so am sure tax will probably be added on......always is. They get locked away with the takings in the safe.....cant believe it. Police are getting involved but i doubt the person will get caught....

There's some low-life bar-stewards (not meaning real bar stewards but can't use the real word!) out there. If we had Sweeney-type policing still then I think a lot less people would take the risk of breaking the law.
Hope you get the money back (but like you, Pam, I'd be surprised).

I know it is. We got paid today so the box was just about to be taken up to head office to get sorted out. There is nowhere else to keep them and you never think that people you work with would do something like that. You trust them but now i just dont know....

I must admit I think the whole tips situation can be very unfair, complicated & open to abuse.
I hear some restaurants actally pay less than the national minimum wage, with tips being used to make up the difference...very naughty.
Personally, I don't agree with the idea where everything goes in a pot & gets shared out either, as everyone ands up getting the same...whereas the staff who were not so good would end up with more than they were initially given, but those who were very efficient would end up with less.
I think it makes sense for the tips to be kept by the staff they're given to in the first place. After all, those are the people they were intended for. It would also mean there was no waiting until the end of the month to get them, no chance of the tips box being stolen, and no time or work involved in counting all the money & sharing everything out.

I agree totally with you but for some reason this is the way my work do it......we are not allowed to take tips even when given to us. They must all be put into jar then at end of night cashed into box.
We never see any of our credit card tips either......think they all go to the company.
We have all worked fro they tips and it annoys me to know that someone has gone off with the full box. They are basically stealing from their friends......fingers crossed they will get caught.

Hi Pam,
there really is some low life about although not much help at the minute but Karma is a great thing just remember what goes around comes around.
And just hope that their next s:Censored: t is a hedgehog :D
As for credit card tips, thats just another way for companys to make money. Always tip the waitress personally so hopefully they get the benefit.

Mmmmm now that the goverment have stopped the rule where tips were part of the employees hourly wage this would mean that they would be loosing money.

I wouldnt put it past the team at head office......they are sneaky people i work for and there is a lot of money that just goes past under your nose and you never see it......
Heard today it took my boss 2weeks to decide to get the police involved and that my boss isnt insured to keep that amount of money on the premises therefore no claim being made......it would be a different kettle of fich if it was the companies money that had gone missing....Absolutely gutted
